Great video thanks, awesome game. But do you have what it takes to face the Emperor’s Challenge. A balanced and more realistic setup, of the optional rules of G40 2nd. That I figured out, playing on Triple A game site, also very fun. They are; Low Luck dice, Low luck for bombing and for AAA guns. Technology on and with Low luck for technology. Meaning that, whatever you spend on technology improvements, gets rolled over onto successive rounds, should you be unsuccessful. A starting handicap of 15 for the Allies, including 1 mandatory Anzac infantry on New Guinea. Bc Japan can sink the entire Anzac navy on round 1, preventing Anzac getting any National bonuses permanently. So Anzac basically gets New Guinea as a freebie, unless Japan puts extra into stopping that and therefore having less ability to damage the Allies elsewhere. This more accurately reflects the true conflict of WW2. The remaining 12 is entirely optional. Personally, I put 1 British destroyer with the Cruiser by Gibraltar. To prevent the Germans from getting full control of the Atlantic on round 1. The British have a chance to fight back, should Germany’s u boats, sink the entire British navy. This makes Sealion a little bit harder to do by round 3, giving the British a chance, to get their units in Canada over the Atlantic. Or to get them to Brazil and or North Africa/Gibraltar. Typically, this can buy Britain an extra round, to survive a full Sealion Rd 1 strategy. Allowing the Americans to have some say in the matter, as would be the case in real life. If Japan chooses to freeze the ISA out of the war for the first 3 rds that’s an enormous opportunity for Germany to kill off. Britain, before the USA can even make a move. With technology on, there’s a magnitude of more permutations that makes every single game unique and less repetitive. It can also prolong the game and reflects the importance of technology in reality. It can also make games quicker, should one side get the right technologies they need for a knockout blow. The remaining 4 credits, I typically put an extra British artillery in Sudan, to help get the Italians out of East Africa and help Britain to hold onto something in the Middle East, should the Luftwaffe get heavily involved, in assisting the Italians, to get their national bonuses. This setup that I’ve played by, about a hundred times, is the fairest and most enjoyable form of G40 2nd. The trouble with the out of the box setup, is that the Axis have the advantage of going first and they can get local Superiority anywhere they wish. There are formulas for the Axis to knock out Britain by rd 4 and India quite early as well. Then the game is usually over by Rd 6, before the Allies have a chance to implement any strategies of their own. If Britain falls and the Royal Navy is sunk early and Italy gets the edge in the Middle East, then Moscow falling by Rd 7, is inevitable. Lastly, another change to the out of the box rules that the Emperor’s challenge includes, is to the Victory Conditions. This can be defined in two ways; Firstly: Either as knocking out 2 major Allies, Britain, Russia, USA. Or 1 Major Allies country and 2 minor countries. UK Pacific and Australia are the minors. Secondly; As capturing the required amount of victory cities in the out of the box rules and holding them for 3 consecutive rds. Thus is bc, too many games can be won by the Axis, simply by knocking out 1 Major Allies country and 1 minor Allies country. Then all the Axis needs are the rest of the Continental Allies Cities. Which usually makes Egypt, the last stand for the Allies. This is completely unrealistic, there’s no way all the Major Allies would’ve surrendered, had Egypt, India and Moscow fallen to the Axis, for example. If there’s 3 extra rds that the Axis have to hold onto them for then the Allies have a fair chance to make a counter attack somewhere, execute a plan that the Allies player has invested hours of time into and resolve any large naval battles that may have been brewing up for several rds, yet haven’t happened yet. Too many games have been won by the Axis, simply by having a couple of land units in Egypt. When the Allies have masses of military a couple of rds away. In other words, there should be some flexibility and discretion with the victory conditions. Both players are still free, to concede at any time, should they wish to and they should be given enough fair opportunity, to exhaust their plans and ideas to swing the game in their favour. Also some players think further ahead than others. An Axis player may have a pre set formula to win the game by rd 5 or 6. While typically the Allies plans will take 8 - 10 rds, to come to fruition. Thanks again and I hope this helps and you have time to try the Emperor’s Challenge.

Mr. Blevins, This is Owen (my twelve your old son) and Geoff. We met you there before the tournament started and had the pleasure of playing Alex and Owen in our semifinal match. We were the team that Owen from the video referred to that played all the way through as the Axis and won. Alex and Owen informed us we were the only team to do that. Funnily enough in our semifinal match, Alex and Owen gave us a bid for them to play the Axis and we surprised them by taking it. We played as the Allies that match and won. Unfortunately, we were unable to stay for the finals as we had to fly home. I've been waiting for this recap ever since we left. Thank you for all you do. Commenting before seeing the results. We're rooting for you, Alex and Owen! They had some terrible, terrible dice luck in our game. It was so bad that I was cringing when they were rolling. I think without that horrible dice luck they win our match. They took it well though and are stand up guys. They turned us into fans of theirs. Good luck Alex and Owen!

The Allies looked like they were playing a standard game rather than tournament. The USA moves made sense for knocking Japan out in turn 7 (at least prior to the desperation plays on the last turn). I suspect the pressure caused the allied players to default to standard moves.

Great tournament report. Like you guys mentioned the gameplay wasn't perfect, most likely due to long days and a very busy GenCon. Still, the early choices and some luck resulted in a slow rolling snowball making the situation worse for the allied team over time. Love this way of covering a game. It is not quick, but the insights and detailed view is very nice to follow along. Thanks for an entertaining hour+ and happy newyears to you all!

I'm just looking at it. Not having a factory in the Philippines really was a mistake. Buy turn 2 Thorp was known. It's an unsinkable 3rd carrier with fighter, bombers, and trip sub stack capabilities. You have to remember everyone gets 2 factories except for Japan. So you have the Russian squeeze play older move still works. Having the extra bombers. You can really only do one in a 5 turn game.

One slight nitpick about the AA in Ukraine. The probability of 1 hit is as Doug said 30.5555% but there is also the 0.027777 for getting 2 hits and when added up together is a 1/3rd of a chance to have 1 or 2 hits which is basically the one shot that the AA gets. I also came to a only 70% chance of Russia winning Ukraine with the 9/12 and the extra AA gun and only a 56/ chance to conquer the territory. The other Idea of putting a Artillery into Libya gives a 63ish% chance to conquer Egypt and a 70% chance to kill the UK fighter in mutual destruction which would severely cripple the Allied plan to all in onto Japan.
@BoardGameNation

All good points! Thanks for sharing!
@joren3275
@joren3275 14 күн бұрын
That’s incorrect. 30.56% is for getting *1 or more* hits. (1-(5/6)^2). The probability to get exactly one hit is 1/6*5/6*2 = 27.78%, and getting 2 is indeed 2.78%. Note how that sums to 30.56%. The expected number of hits is of course simply 1/6 * 2 = 0.333 but that’s not a probability.

I adjusted my ideas for units, especially the eastfront, a bit. I always feel artillery is overlooked, it's so much more value per IPC then tanks as long as you have infantry to go along with it. 42 IPC buys 14 infantry (14/28) 6 infantry 6 artillery (24/24) 7 tanks (21/21), but movement of 2 For defense 14 infantry is best, not only have 28 defense vs 24, but also two more hits you can take. So what you like to buy depends on how many extra infantry you have and how many you expect to lose. If you don't expect to lose them, 7 tanks seem a solid buy for attack. But if you don't need the threat of movement, a 6 inf+6art buy is superior: 3 more attack and defense and 5 more hits to absorb. In addition you have options with airpower. These at first seem very expensive, but not when you expect to trade territory, expecting to lose all land units that survive the next turn with little effort. Especially Russia needs fighters and infantry to trade and stall, with the fighters doing most of the damage from a distance. As Germany needs defense less they'll slightly favor bombers for extra range. With 2 fighters 2 infantry can take 1 unit (with 1 loss) easily, net trading trading 2 units for 2 when taking the return hit in account. 3 vs 2 will probably work (2 inf 1 art marginally better), even having a high chance of having 2 units remaining. Removing 3 or more units is easy enough, but you increase the stakes of losing what you send and enticing the opponent to send in more or more valuable units and losing them. The winner of the exchange will be the one to put in so much the other can't retake it. Adding more planes, especially bombers, will make it less important if luck or ballsy moves leave 2 or 3 units as defense. The type, even tanks or planes, isn't that important either if you kill everything in one round. In the endgame, Russia will probably lose all except Moscow and only need defense. A stack with attackpower (artillery or tanks) might limit Germany from splitting their end stack, but will be weaker. For Germany I would be in favor of artillery over tanks for turn 1-3 purchases, but this game showed having a huge tank stack with airpower provides a range two threat that inf/art don't. Note that Russia and Germany need to be cost-effective. The others are also concerned with getting the units where they want them fast enough. UK might help sending fighters to defend moscow fast, but could also move a ministack from India to Russia with more value. Infantry and artillery followed by tanks that catch up could have more value. But fighters are more flexible and can be sent later, defending India and threatening fleets from there in the meantime. What are your opinions on buying less tanks and more artillery or airpower? Any strategy where Russia does favor a bigger percentage of artillery?
@BoardGameNation
@BoardGameNation 16 күн бұрын
You make several good points. I am a believer that fighters and infantry are the best combination for most land combat situations, particularly for the Russians. The ability to strike a forward position with leaving the offensive unit in harms way critical to mid-game back and forth on the Eurasian front. Plus, the fighters will be superior to any other in defense of Moscow. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts!

Hi Gary and anyone else who is reading! I wanted to share some really interesting house rules that I have created for a next level of gameplay and chaos within the game. If you have any questions about the rules or balancing, feel free to ask! Here they are: Soviet Union: If Russia is attacked, the Soviets receive 5 free infantry on their next turn, which must be placed in Russia (one time use only). In addition, every Soviet submarines has the ability to ignore enemy destroyers, allowing them to still use a surprise attack even when enemy destroyers are present. This can only be done when the sub count is higher or equal to the destroyer count. If there are more destroyers than there are Soviet subs in the battle, none of the subs get their surprise attack. (This rule was only added to give the Russian sub a bit more love) Germany: Germany can move tanks 3 spaces instead of 2 when capturing enemy territory without enemy forces (old blitz but slightly better) Germany can also call in infantry when its capital is attacked. If it’s a bombing raid, they get 1 free infantry added to Germany. If it’s a regular attack, they get 2 free infantry added. Finally, 1 German tank per battle is allowed to have +1 attack (rolling for a 4 or less instead of 3 or less). Note that this can only be done with an attack, nothing changes on defence. United Kingdom: For UK, if any of the sea zones directly around the capital is attacked, any fighters next to it can join in to defend. In addition, the UK get an “empire bonus”. For each of the 3 colonised countries they control (Africa, Australia, and India), they receive an extra +2 IPC’s (total of 6 if they control all 3) at the start of their turn Japan: For Japan, they can kamikaze which means fighters and bombers can join attacks even at the end of their range, but they will be destroyed at the end of the battle no matter what. After they are destroyed, If the enemy still has units left in the battle, fighters can roll for a 1, and bombers can roll for a 2 or less. If they hit, they take a unit down with them (has to be land or sea - can not take down something in the air) If Japan’s capital is attacked, half of their infantry in Japan will defend at a 3 or less, instead of the usual 2. Finally, any other island that is not Japan itself, Japan is allowed to have 1 infantry per battle defend at a 3 instead of a 2. Similar to Germany’s rule, note that Japan only gets this bonus if it is defending not attacking, and only if it is on an island. America: For america, they have the option to buy a “special transport”. These transports can take any 2 units, instead of having to take 1 unit + 1 infantry. They can also choose to take 3 infantry if they wish. These special transports cost 9 IPC’s to produce. And as for Americas nuke, it can only be made after 5 full turns. It costs 30 IPC’s to build, and the bomber that takes it cannot participate in any air battles while carrying the nuke. If the nuke reaches the target, it instantly destroys all units both friendly and enemy in that specific country, as well as any factories that are there as well. For the nuke to work, the Americans have to roll a 5 or less. If a 6 is rolled, the nuke malfunctions and doesn’t explode. Only one nuke can be present at a time, meaning one has to be detonated or destroyed before another one can be built.

Just a thought about the American turns losing an infantry to the Japanese bombers in consecutive rounds on Iwo Jima: I have played this game for 30+ years. I will still find myself playing against seasoned, fairly good players who DID NOT KNOW a critical rule about one or more aspects of gameplay. It’s possible that the American player didn’t know they could leave land units on their transport and not land them. Sounds crazy. I know. But I’ve run into-recently-some players who literally disputed this or admitted they didn’t know it. Both through discord chats or in person games. So it’s possible that guy just didn’t know that was an option. Ps. Great production work on the video.

The aa gun hit + the 1% fleet event in East Indies really stuffed any KJF chances imo and put this game into high skew against the allies similar to a Russia loss in Ukraine R1. The R1 pivot back to classic Crush Russia tactics for the Axis paid off

Generally, I don't like to initiate early big turn 1 battles that are under 70%. Especially if the opposing side has a battleship because if that battle goes a little sideways, they are likely to walk away with a unit that is worth 20 ipcs that immediately recovers its extra hit. When attacking the big British fleet, I know there are a lot of tantalizing targets but there is too much material to divert more than one sub away. And I know the zone 37 attack is popular but in almost all instances I find it more valuable to take out the transport and destroyer in 61. It requires little investment and it really limits what Japan can do. Limiting options for opponents before their turn 1, in my opinion, is more valuable than raw material.
@BoardGameNation
@BoardGameNation 18 күн бұрын
Certainly a fair point. The value in the sz 37 attack really comes into play in the later rounds. The early losses by Japan give the US an early lead in the build tempo. That small lead in the beginning snowballs behind the US economic might. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! @@BoardGameNation I agree and understand the thought behind it but if the US v Japan navy build up is your concern, you can accomplish the same effect by discouraging any kind of Pearl Harbor action resulting in the US saving half of their Pacific fleet. By taking Borneo and New Guinea with cruiser support, one it almost guarantees they are taken eating into Japan's income while adding a boost to UK, two with targets that can be real thorns in zones 49, 47 and 61 (or 48 if you get lucky and you like to get a lil froggie like myself) they have to be dealt with and any attempt at even a light Pearl spreads forces too thin at sea and/or leaves land advances with little to no air support. And if you be Thumping from India, taking out a centrally placed destroyer while saving a sub for a round 2 attack can be real effective. Especially if either Japan's placement was not perfect or their clean up battles didn't go well. Which on round 2 can land you easy little stragglers while only risking a sub hit back or with a lil luck potentially get you the same big ticket units with better odds. But ultimately unless Japan takes some real gambles it makes their turn very predictable. I think one of the main advantages of Japan are their array of options that can have an immediate effect. Just my thoughts. It is definitely more effective in longer non-tournament play but can still be very effective with a 5-6 turn limit.

In 1942v2, can units remain on transports while at sea? Or must they disembark is able? IE, if the US chose to take a unit from Midway island, could it have left it on the transport in the Iwo Jima sea zone (somewhat) protected by all the other naval units?

Ah. The important thing to notice is that the land unit was on the island of Iwo Jima, not on the transport with the fleet. So, they are in separate spaces. This left the infantry defenseless and an easy target for the Japanese bombers. Good question! Thanks for watching!

@ Yeah that makes sense. I just don’t necessarily love it thematically. Seems odd that the bombers could come in and continually bombard those two infantry while the rest of the fleet and those fighters just sit their twiddling their thumbs. Makes more sense thematically for me that they would be involved in the flight (especially for an island, different story for land part of a large land mass). About Russia Round 2, the thing in favor of not sending that much into Ukraine is that Germany could send everything into Arch Angels and threaten Moscow which means whatever is in Ukraine has a problem defending Moscow for a German attack. Atleast this is what I would have considered as Germany in order to get Russian troops out of eastern Europe. For the UK2 turn the tank in Canada is stuck there anyway so that one I would definitely take and land into europe about the tank that was on the British Islands depends on if you got enough to fill the transports the next round. And yes as the UK if you have an early fleet the main reason for the UK is to trade with Germany and sap resources any unit used in retaking France and North West Europe is something that wont be hitting Moscow. That said I would have still taken France with the Tank&Infantry from Canada but only 1 Infantry into North West Europe.

One more comment, I think most people are baffled by the Allies moves here because I think they got thrown off their original plan with 2 odd happenings one bad and one good. One not only not getting Ukraine but also losing a fighter, brutal. And two, having all their material to use on zone 7. I think US's overly aggressive play is prolly a habit when they are use to more India investment. Building a carrier in the Atlantic (which I agree with in this game) made any meaningful early Pacific investment impossible.

I have just one question - How was it possible for the Japanese to lose both the Carrier and Battleship but not the Fighters, while UK lost all 6 units? This is not even possible unless the Axis intentionally decide to lose their Battleship. There is a possibility UK left the Sub until the end and it sunk it, but then the sub wouldn't have been destroyed, and of what I see it is. So what the bloody hell happened there?
@BoardGameNation
@BoardGameNation 19 күн бұрын
I'm not sure of the exact sequence, but this is definitely a really good outcome for Japanese. Also, opting to lose the BB over the Fighters is actually a pretty good choice. They still defend at a 4 and can land on East Indies if they survive. I'm not sure that helped, but thanks for watching!

I'm curious why Japan chose to sacrifice the battleship UK T1 instead of one of the 2 fighters.. my take on it is you have a 20 ipc unit loss instead of a 10 IPC unit loss.. Japan can purchase that fighter replacement T1 and still have money left, whereas a 20 ipc replacement sets them back a bit, and you lose out on a valuable escort/fighting piece vs the inevitable American attack.

This if something that we will be talking about in the live stream on Friday, but the short answer is that is kind of a dealer's choice that depends on a number of factors ( what units did the hitting, what was left on the defense, what can attack what would remain, etc). I will say that, when playing Japan, if I have a choice between two fighters and a battleship, I prefer the fighters. Thanks for the question. More about it on Friday. Thanks for watching!!

These are very boring. First, why so much fluff before you actually showcase the game?? Second, need to showcase better games, a game that is decided by the 4th round is not entertaining at all.

At some point it just gets really annoying to listen to the smug down-putting laughter from the commentators. Its insensitive to particularly the allied players playing under pressure, subjective and should have been kept off the air. Certainly doesnt belong in an objective analysis. Good luck finding candidates for next years humiliation on KZbin.

As I said, even good players have a bad game. Our goal was never to embarrass or humiliate anyone. We try to offer a fair analysis of the moves as we see them. Still, you'll notice that the Allied players in the match were never named. This was a deliberate choice to avoid any hurt feelings. Still, we apologize if you felt like we were unnecessarily critical. It was not our intention. Watching it again, it felt like we were questioning as many Axis moves as Allied. Either way, thanks for watching and for the feedback!

@ so… you knew by not naming the allied players that you were going to put down their effort. I dont think you were too critical in strict game terms. No - I think your mannerisms and laughing at said players are far beyond, what they signed up for… and downright offensive to put on a cast. I Wonder if you, your co-caster and 1 axis player in particular would act so obnoxious, had the allied players been on the cast. This was not a just a neutral informative cast, but it comes across as a disrespectful slagging of 2 guys, who were probably outmatched from the getgo, were unlucky or made alot of high risk for high reward decisions that just didnt come to fruition. Or a combination. Nevertheless this wasnt enjoyable to watch. Shame - wont watch it again either. Take from this what you will.

Laughing at such laughable play by the Allies is deserved.

It's a shame that the Allies had atrocious dice the whole game. Axis still probably would have won but yikes on those rolls for the Allies, every battle was just brutal.
