It's not convenience that's the issue, is the mass inundation of social media. I'm all for dumbphones but you can do everything you want with a dumbphone, on a smartphone by just simply deleting certain apps and turning off notifications.

Truth be told, it took me a lot longer than I would like to admit, to realize that smartphones and modern conveniences have basically just... destroyed me entirely. My attention span is completely shot, my mental health is worse than ever, and my sleep schedule is, honestly, just as bad because phones are too easy to be distracted by (and it's equally my fault too, I have basically no self restraint in this regard.) It's really cool to see that a lot of people also feel the same way. I miss just having a boat load of free time to where I can just sit down and read a book, or play a PS2 game again instead of constantly being distracted by social media all the time

So true , it's been about 3 months and my sleep schedule has been absolutely bombed because of the habit of social media. It has reached to the point where it's difficult to fix the schedule again. I can skip 2 days of sleep and still my brain would not want to sleep early because it has already adjusted to the late bedtime.

It’s not your fault. Everything you see on your phone is designed to be highly addictive. There is billions of dollars of software in use to maximize engagement to maximize profits, and you’re the victim. It’s not you’re fault you’re addicted, the supercomputers running this shit are way smarter than we are and they’re designed to destroy us mentally

@quentint5735 you're right. I realised I've been facing this problem not for a few months but abt 3 years now. I hate it. No matter how much hardwork goes into fixing your sleep , You just bounce back to the horrible cycle again. once ur sleep schedule is ruined , it's nearly impossible to fix it back which can affect real life plans and activities :(

I'm an old man who went from flip, which I loved, to smartphone because of my physical condition. I can no longer go to the library so I read books on it. I take many meds and have to research each because of being reactive. Almost died once. Library research again must be done from my home. I could go on but you get the idea. Would go back to my flip in a moment if I could. But having lived the majority of my life with no cell phone I applaud your decision because you are living in the moment again.

I absolutely love the video. As a fellow 2002 young adult I also felt that social media was stealing life away from me, that constant numb feeling that was corroding my soul. I did purge all social media from my smart phone and now I'm happier than ever, my friends and family gave me the weird look at first but they are happier now that I'm being more present and thoughtfull with them. Now with time to fill i have started to journal and picked up embroidery and reading as hobbies again. You inspire me to get myself a flip phone for further dissociation with social media, and also to buy myself a camara to take mindfull pictures of the beautiful world we live in.

Being an older millennial (37yrs) it is cool seeing gen z being a big driver in downgrading. I too switched to a dumbphone (a more purposed built one with calendar but otherwise dumb ~ the light phone) it makes a huge difference. I WFH doing data so my challenge is to cut down on my at home screen time (iPad). Overall well worth it and have had many positive conversations with people spurred by the phone

@@inkreydible I had been on the Light Phone 2 for about 7 months. I switched back to an iPhone because of some limitations but after a month I plan to go back to it. It is a great compromise as you can do normal touch screen texting (pretty slow though due to e-ink) instead if T-9. Also has directions (iffy but works) and can connect to Google Calendar. I did get a Garmin Car GPS unit, MP3 player and Camera to replace some of the missing phone things. I enjoy having 1 use devices though as they help keep me use them with a purpose.

Sorry for the late reply I just saw this. I used the Light Phone 2 a modern purpose built dumb phone for about 9 months. It is e-ink and is a touch screen and has the necessities and nothing extra. For me having a synced calendar was vital and a decent texting experience. It has a calendar, directions (kinda meh) and a podcast/music app but only for files (no streaming). The texting is a bit annoying at times because the slow e-ink but way better than most true dumb phones that use T9 (that is using the number pad for those gen Zeers out there :😀 ). I have also tried a few others (Hisense A9 am e-ink smartphone from china. It was awesome but had very little reception as it wasn’t designed for that us market) but the light phone is the best. You pay a little premium for it (300 new or 200 used) but worth it. All that said currently I am using a more compromise by using a super stripped down Jelly Star which is a mini android smartphone that has a 3 inch screen. I took off most apps except maps, Spotify and the camera. I went cold turkey into the light phone and was amazing but it does require a lot of change such as planning ahead more and writing things down. I still have my light phone but so far the compromise option is best for me. If you are ready and able to go full dumb phone I highly suggest the light phone and the jelly star is amazing if you want more of a compromise. The jelly star is a full android smartphone so you would want to root it and remove all distracting apps and maybe the play store depending on your needs. Good luck and totally worth it!!!!

i got my first ‘dumbphone’ in 2020 but really committed at the end of last year when i got the nokia 2780 and it was such amazing experience and the few times i briefly switched back, i learned how incredibly overstimulating it was and quickly hated it. you really notice how much other people are always on their phones missing out on the little things that accumulate to big things. i love the things i’ve learned about myself too in the many more moments i have to myself

And they say the younger generation are idiots 🤦‍♂️ I love this revolution. You cannot stifle humanity, it always comes back screaming. Glad to hear it's really helping you. i used to read, write, film and create art all the time as a kid and into my early 20's. That quickly stopped and I just became a pure dopamine addict. It sucks, I miss it and it's a part of myself I'm trying to find again. I've been going back and fourth on whether to get a feature phone (it's not a dumb phone, that would technically by a landline phone with no speed dail settings). After spending almost 3 hours researching the topic, I then realised I DEFINITELY need to stop using my "Smart" phone. Plus I'm a dad, so it justifies getting a phone belt clip. Nothing BUT features IMO. Thanks for your video dude. You're bright and you're also proof that we're heading in the right direction.

After many years, i was coerced by friends in to getting social media after avoiding it for years. Since then my attention span has been close to destroyed, and for most of my day i have something playing in my ear. A year or two ago i thought about getting a flip phone. My family called me ridiculous, and just said it'd be a hassle. I made a big mistake listening to them. My breaking point for this decision was that I realized that I felt unnatural without an earbud in. I just felt off, and when I put it in I felt a sense of relief and a dopamine increase. I feel sick realizing that I'm wasting a heavy amount of my life and childhood (16 y/o btw), and I can't wait to get a flip phone as soon as I can.

My teen social media was mainly Facebook and archaic KZbin, it wasn’t that big. And no one really had a smartphone till I was around 15. As someone who was born in 2004, I didn't grew up with smartphones either. My parents didn't got one until late 2018. My mother only utilized the house phone. Yes, I have an iPhone 12 currently, but I don't really go on my phone that much compared to when I used to back in 8th grade. I learned that it has made not only my mental health worse, but I was physically drained. I know now most of the things we need for school, work, or even random navigation is through modern technology, but in reality, we really are better off without constantly staring at a screen for over 12 hours. My head starts to hurt if I stare at a screen for 2+ hours, and I hate it (especially when it was E-Learning during COVID). It takes away time where you could be doing other things as well. I have social media, but I don't constantly go on it since to me it can be boring sometimes (I can't be the only one). There's so much to do outside these screens, and I love how flip-phones look too. Might get one.

Excellent video. And by reading the NYT paper edition, you get a chance to read a variety of material including analysis not subject to an algorithm but by a human editor. If you are using a flip phone with KaiOS, yes, you do have access to Google maps but using the function is slower of course. Glad you are a fast texter. With a little practice, the speed increases but KaiOS texting can be buggy.

Good video dude. Stick with it because what you’re doing is living your life more freely. Smartphones have become nooses and like you said they are destroying our souls. I’ve just recently switched to a flip phone and thus reduced my screen time. I still have an iPad which is still a distraction at times but with time I’ll wean off of it as well. Best wishes.

One of the best of the dumb phone "trend" videos I've seen. The intro is perfect! Also, as someone who grew up with old school phones, its so crazy to see how many people don't know how to use T9 texting 😅 (not an insult). A lot of people that try a dumb phone and post about it talk about how hard the texting is and, when they demonstrate, they have T9 turned off! 😂 T9 is super easy and once you take the 2 mins or less to get used to it you can pretty much text without looking.
@christ0fu
@christ0fu 3 ай бұрын
I tried T9 but I use a lot of slang that doesn't get picked up, so I just opted to type everything out haha
@jni34108
@jni34108 3 ай бұрын
@@christ0fu Yes. It can definitely be a hassle. Most phones have a "personal dictionary" setting where you can enter all your slang (and curse) words to be used with T9. See if your phone has one. Makes things a lot easier 🙂

awesome video bro! Super proud of you for making the change. This coming paycheck i’m getting a dumb phone (AGM M9) an Mp3 player and a gps (garmin drive 52) and gonna see how i feel. I feel like this uninterrupted access to a global community is not how our minds were meant to handle information and cynicism and nihilism is running rampant. I feel like having a phone with internet access is like being in an extremely cramped loud bar and you can’t focus can’t think and you’re trying to figure out what to do in that environment. I feel like going ‘dumb’ is like stepping outside and breathing fresh air and stretching your arms. Would love to see an update video with how you’ve been adapting and the changes you’ve made to your routine since this video. Again, great video bro and proud of you for nurturing your soul.

i’m 16, and im addicted to my phone (my screen time is like 7-11 hours it’s insane), i have exams in 2 months that determine the grades i apply to university with and I have to put my phone in another room to even get work done… I ordered a flip phone and it arrives tomorrow and i can’t wait. I always feel like i never have enough time in my day for hobbies or studying, but i obviously do because of my screen time, so i’m hoping getting a dumb phone helps reconnect with my actual hobbies and studying. As long as i can download music i’m good, when i go on holiday and stuff where i need to connect to wifi (because data plans and international stuff) i can always switch the sim back. This video is super helpful! (Also if i remember I’ll reply to this comment about how using a flip has been in a bit.)

@@christ0fu Yesterday was my first full day without a phone (i still have it but it has no sim or apps and i don’t carry it with me, i just have it to scan homework into PDFs and for some texts that i haven’t figured out on my flip) and i didn’t realise how much time would just be… bored. Not like hours of time but those minutes in a day where i’m waiting for my bus, or for classes to start, stuff like that where i would just open my phone for a minute or two and scroll (moral of the story i definitely need a book on me, and i used a notebook for my bus times instead of the tracker app, also defo need a planner for all my homework and school stuff because i normally use an app on my phone). Today i’m going to town without a phone, i’m going to a thrift store to get a wallet now that i don’t have apple pay and for my bus pass and stuff. In my free time i actually built a lego set instead of TikTok and watched a film my teacher has been telling me to watch for months. Also the amount of notifications that are meaningless are astounding, i opened my phone to hand in some homework and i had like 20 notifications… only 1 of them was a whatsapp text from someone everything else was POINTLESS (so and so added to their story etc). I also went on a little walk because i knew when i got home i couldn’t just… open TikTok so that was nice. I’ll add an update in a week or two once i’ve used it for longer

I love this video. You're an inspiration! I remember getting my first phone back in my last year of high school. The screen was all orange with black text. My parents kept forcing me to get one and I didn't want one... Nobody else at school had a phone. In college I gave in like everyone and got a smartphone and now I can't see myself without one. I'm always absorbed and rarely am looking at life. I'm more like wasting it on social media. I'm scared at the idea of not having certain conveniences like maps... but I do remember going to Tokyo, Japan by myself with a paper map and I still got around just fine. I wanna try this challenge too. Maybe the CAT S22? Then downgrade more if I can do it.
