the magic keyboard hinge is limited because if it went further back, it would tip over more easily because unlike with a laptop, the weight is mostly in the screen so pushing it too far back means the center of gravity is past the hinge and it tips over. i haven’t personally tested this with the new magic keyboard but i daily drive the old one and that thing is so well balanced. i’m actually surprised they were able to get the new one straight and not angled forward like the old one. i also really like the fact that it doesn’t fold over because i don’t want to be putting my keyboard and glass trackpad on whatever surface i put it down on. i have a dbrand skin on the ipad itself to protect against scratches and i’d rather put that on the table than the keyboard side. just personal preference though, i like it you don’t

I was just about to mention this. I thought the hovering iPad thing was dumb until I realized it allows the keyboard to not add even more weight to the setup. The only other solutions (that I can think of) are doing Microsoft Surface style kickstand which would kill lap use, or adding weights or battery to the keyboard. Both solutions probably add more weight and thickness, I definitely don’t want more weight and thickness, especially on the 12.9. I agree with every review since the first iPad Pro, amazing tablet, held back by software. But it checks all the right boxes for me and my business, so I like it.

I get why people are critical and compare these to macbooks or other laptops, because cost, but it's a different tool with a completely different job. they're making very clear with the marketing this is an artist's tool, with the most advanced stylus i know of, and an insane display. you really cannot find everything it offers together, anywhere else. Well, I got myself one of these. They finally broke me. I am VERY annoyed it is locked to a toy-OS, but I have had so many tablet-style drawing-capable machines which have all sucked to the point I have stopped using them. Especially my Wacom one, ironically. I just want something that functions. If I can't draw on the computer I carry with me, it's useless. So, even with the new Surface lineup on the horizon I still opted for this for that screen, the general snapyness and polish as well as not needing to deal with the Windows clunk every time I want to doodle on the train. MacOS, or even better, the capacity to run MacOS-apps inside iPadOS would be a massive upgrade though, instantly leaving any and all competing devices in the dust.
@TalesOfWar7 ай бұрын
You say you want MacOS on this. I don't think you do, not really. The clunk you describe in Windows is what you'll get with MacOS on the iPad. It isn't designed for touch, the whole OS would need an entirely new UI for everything. Remember Windows 8 and how much that sucked because of that?
@Hostile_Design7 ай бұрын
@@TalesOfWar being able to open a real tool and have it be a tad clunky is far superior to not being able to open it at all. Any time, any place. Always. Windows on touch can be finicky, yes, but add a trackpad or pen, and it's fine. Anywhere near as smooth as something built for touch? No. Of course not. But what does that matter when I can't edit my 3D print files at my printers? Those kinds of scenarios are what annoys me. When my 2013 Surface can get a job done easily, and an iPad Pro simply can't due to being neutered in software despite being a far more powerful machine. Opening a desktop app on an iPad doesn't need to function differently from the desktop version to be usable. The Surface line has proven that viable, over a decade ago. Make iPadOS and MacOS apps cross-compatible and open the desktop apps as is, and we'd be good.

@@Hostile_Design Your compromise for having crappy touch support on a Windows system is to make it into a laptop. And this is why so many developers for Windows don't bother making good touch interfaces, because they know they'll just use it as a laptop in those situations. This is why Apple didn't make hybrid devices, they made the iPad and Mac distinct. iPad is designed for touch first, everything else is extra, Mac is made for keyboard and mouse/trackpad, everything else is extra. When you combine the two you get something that isn't really all that great for either unless it's an entirely different UI in each mode to make the most of the input paradigm. Developers are lazy, they'll do the least amount of work to get their thing working. If they're not incentivised to do more, they won't. Some will, but the vast majority won't and especially not the ones who make the "real tools", whatever that even means. Adobe can't even make a good UI for keyboard and mouse/trackpad and they've been doing it for around 40 years.

As a perfectionist researcher, kind of geek person I bought the air and a new iPad Pro - because I wanted a little bit larger size than my iPad Pro 11 from 2018. After benchmarking I literally had my jaw hit the floor because they were almost identical! But you know what I kept the pro and I’m gonna tell you why. First off the air gets very hot when charging. Heat when charging equals short life span. Plus and I know a lot of people don’t do this, I use it to read Kindle books on and the refresh rate did actually hurt my eyes on the air. But otherwise almost freaking identical. I’m also an artist and use Procreate and I don’t know what all the fluff people are talking about with the experience being poor - it was fine for me But ultimately even with the higher price of the pro - I know I’ve got something that’s gonna last for quite a few years and The lightness of the pad for me is key because I have it on my lap for drawing often, and I also have an arm that gets sore very quickly if I’m trying to hold the other ones. The negative factors for the pad for me are the speakers just aren’t as good as the iPad Pro from a few years Ago, and the super saturated contrast is not changeable! There are colour profiles, but you can’t shift your black white balance like you can on pretty much any cheap android or Windows device. That is stupidly annoying. That should be base level functionality But ultimately, I know have a tablet that I can use as a computer with my external touchpad and keyboard, and also I get a bit of a longer daily battery life than the air.

It's funny, that right in the introduction Linus says "I'd either use my phone, or my laptop." I remember the launch of the original, first generation iPad, the first one ever. And many press outlets - including national TV - reported on the lines of people waiting in front of apple stores. Many even asked the waiting why they are buying the iPad, and what they are going to use it for. And nobody had a real answer to that question. Most just repeated the "to increase my productivy" - basically parrotting apple's official talking point, but nobody could explain how and why that would make them more productive. Some few openly admitted they had no idea what they were gonna do with it. Almost 15 years later, we still don't know what tablets are for... a larger screen for your mobile apps? an ersatz-laptop for people who can't type? A handful of commercial use-cases have emerged - like restaurants using them as digital menu cards, or hairdresser taking a picture of you, and showing you different haircuts on your actual face - stuff like that. There are quite a few such niche applications where it's genuinely useful. But as a product category, the tablet still has no identifying purpose. When somebody owns a phone and a laptop - you probably have a pretty good idea, what they might do with that. But when somebody owns a tablet, it still always begs the question: "and what do you actually do with that?". (Most common answer seems to be: "baby-sitter - to let the kids watch peppa pig or something")

The problem is that you have to find those highly specific apps. I worked as a CTO for a company and actively tracked down apps which would help me and it greatly increased my productivity, mostly by finding apps that removed all the labourous work, such as note taking during meetings, quickly creating presentations etc. It's quite disingenious to rant on something you haven't really tried or researched. @@85Portar Agreed. Graphics artists is a good usecase. I ended up going from an old 16" Intel MBP down to the 14" M3 Max, so I basically need my next iPad for content consumption, casually editing photos, and drawing. I just wish they would offer a standard OLED (not dual layer) on the iPad Air eventually, even if they have to bump up the price by $100. I'd much rather spend $699 on an OLED iPad Air than $999 on an iPad Pro that is way faster than I would ever need from a tablet. But I think Apple knows the display is what upsells people. I kind of want one after watching this. The iPad has long been an iPhone hooked up to a great touch screen and a faster-than-necessary processor, and at this point people basically know what they're getting. But that screen sounds incredible and if you have the money to spend and understand the device's limitations, it sounds pretty great.

Literally the only channel that talks about the display in such detail. I already watched dozens of reviews, but this is the only channel that made clear how good this display actually is.

You were really making me want this untill you reminded me that Apple will never make an all in one device to canabilize Macbook sales. The hypocritical greed of Steve Jobs lives beyond even the grave.

The M1 iPad Pro has lived in my bag for over two years and I don’t plan on buying another iPad.

3:46 This is the first 11-inch iPad (2018) so this is its actual name. The next ones are called “1st generation”, “2nd…”, etc.

I really wish that they made it a couple milimeters thicker. Not only could you get much more battery, but you could do without the camera bump. I hate it when things don't lie flat. It would also be nice to have like, a second usbc port? Plus everything Linus said about their stupid keyboard hinge. But even as somebody who doesn't particularly like apple products, looking at those screen stats, and the capabilities of a low end desktop in a low profile tablet like that, and listening to the audio? That's pretty incredible. Gotta respect the engineering involved, no matter how much contempt you have for the company.

8:55 The real graphic designer makes me feel like if I buy an M4 iPad Pro that I, too, can become an amazing artist. SPOILER ALERT: The iPad Pro M4 will not give you talent. If you can only draw stick figures before the iPad Pro M4, you will only draw stick figures (maybe faster) after the iPad Pro M4.

I use my iPad to read comics, draw, and use the Sidecar feature with my laptop, all the best use cases for an iPad. So I guess this would be a pretty good upgrade for me.

that “ipad pro 11 inch” does actually give you the exact model, because the following ones are “ipad pro 11 inch … generation”, so not having the generation tells you that’s the 2018 ipad pro. i have the 2021 ipad pro 12.9 inch and that one says “ipad pro 12.9 inch 5th generation. sure that means you have to know when exactly each model came out, so it’s not perfect but it does identify the device
