There are more harrowing moments to long boating than one would expect. One moment it's all peaceful and bucolic and suddenly you're beached. I liked when Nicole said "We have to at least try it", which turned out to be right.

"Life is better with challenges, and challenges are best overcome together" - Michael Downtzu, the Art of Traveling. But it's true! Challenging yourself is how you grow as a person. And when it comes to working together, alone we can do so little, together we can do so much. No one can whistle a symphony, it takes a whole orchestra to play it. Only when we work together, can we make the world a better place.

As a 21 year old (Australian) i haven't gone to many places except Japan which I loved, I've always wanted to travel, but the generic Europe holiday has never appealed enough to me to spend the money to do it, but these last 4 videos have definitely put UK canal boating on my very small bucket list, big landmarks are cool but I think this experience would top almost any tourism spot and I can't wait to do this myself.

Agreed, it's quite a feat in engineering. So there's a story for why the Tuel Lane Lock was built in 1996. The Rochdale Canal was originally abandoned by an Act of Parliament in 1952. When the canal company tried to shut down the final section in 1965, the Inland Waterways Association petitioned against it, and has since petitioned projects that would've severed the route (like a Sowerby Bridge supermarket in 1980). This section however remained isolated from the network as the connection to the Calder and Hebble Navigation waterway was missing. So in 1991, a grant of £2.5 million (over £5 million in today's money) was secured that paved the way for the final link to be restored.

I believe the ideal depth of water in a canal is 4 feet but water levels vary and each boat has a different draft depending on how heavily loaded it is. The side walls may be rock, brick or concrete but the bottom is always a layer of clay - good waterproof stuff.

I've been subscribed to your channel for a while now and enjoyed it thoroughly. I've especially enjoyed the narrow boat series. I moved from England when I was eight (fifty years ago) to the US. I tried to go back and visit in my 20's twice, but each time something stopped me (appendicitis and car troubles). So I stopped trying. Needless to say, I've seen more of my homeland on TV and KZbin than I have in person. THANK YOU! This series has added to my "visit" to home in that I got to see things that reminded me of my youth. I remember taking a narrow boat trip aboard the Jenny Wren (a school trip?). Your videos brought those memories back to me and I remembered how much I enjoyed that short ride. This made me envious of your multi-day journey! I'm so glad you had so much fun onboard some of my favorite tiny homes! Looking forward to the bonus episode and your next "Travels by ???" series. Thanks for great stories! Mark

I love that you included your major challenge and 'disagreement'. That tells me a lot about you (that you're ok to put this out there so you are showing your humanity) and it is truer to life ...for all of us. This reminds me of the time my husband and I rented a houseboat with our two kids. We were on the Trent-Severn canal system in Ontario. My husband wanted to fish but was out of bait, so we went into a cove where the map showed there was a marina. The map was wrong, and worse, we got into a very shallow area littered with huge boulders. Our clunky single-engine rental houseboat made the challenge, well, challenging! After an hour of yelling, "rock on the right! Turn hard!!", we survived without ruining the engine. Were we tense and arguing...yes. But you know what, we now often think back to that experience with fondness, for a challenge overcome.

If you are looking for another Canadian adventure by boat with more locks and a mix of areas. There's the Trent-Severn Waterway. From Lake Ontario (Bay of Quinte) to the Lake Huron (Georgian Bay). It's a long meandering travel by boat, but it's there for the taking.

I would like to point out that it isn’t always necessary to hire a longer narrow boat. Especially when you’re a newby to boating . Some hire agencies have much shorter boats known as Buttie boats which were originally built to accommodate the growing families of the professional boatmen and they could be more rises or not depending on the owner’s financial circumstances. If the owner couldn’t afford a motor then the smaller boat would be towed by the larger boat. The smaller boats weren’t built to handle any cargoes just as extended living accommodation and would normally be captained by either the spouse of the boatman or perhaps by the oldest of their children, very occasionally the vessel would be controlled by an employee or Mate but it was more often kept in the family.

Your videos reflect wonderfully the relaxed pace of life and tranquility of the canals, even in stressful situations. It's funny how similar the scene along the river at the end of the video looks to the millworks and textile factories along the Speed, Nith and Grand rivers in Ontario. Elora, Fergus, Hespeler, Preston, Galt, Brantford and Paris all have similar scenes as well as many other locales. I was privileged to grow up in one of the earliest settled regions in Canada with buildings crafted in the late 17 early 1800's and it wasn't until I moved West that it hit how new Canada really is. Early settlers gravitated to rivers and thus communities were built, bringing the British architecture that is so familiar is these videos. Your videos are educating and entertaining at the same time as I had no clue of long boating or locks in GB although I have been a canal gawker along the Welland Canal. Thanks for another great video!

Fun to watch, near me (I live in Hanover, Germany) theres a lock in the „Mittellandkanal“ in Germany, the canal is mostly used for cargo and waaaay bigger than this one. The lock is 14.7 m deep, thats about 48 ft. The width is 11.6 m (38 ft) and 214 m long (702 ft). So yeah, its one hell of an hole, actually two!. I have never driven a boat through it, only looked down from the sidewalk. If you‘re interested, it‘s called „Schleuse Anderten“ or „Hindenburgschleuse“ and was build between 1919 and 1928. When it was finished in 1928 it was the biggest inland lock in Europe. A few years ago I was on vacation in Ireland twice, where we lived on rented boats and drove them through canals and rivers (Shannon and Erne, to name the rivers, the canal is called „Shannon-Erne-Waterway“. It has 16 beautiful locks, the landscape is incredible and these were the best holidays of my life!

Wow, wish I'd known about the stay bar. I was driving alone a few times because I'd done it before, but that would have really been handy. One time, we had to postpone the trip because the canals were flooded. One of my fondest memories was when I was driving in pouring rain; I was singing and totally present in nature. Great vid!

I've enjoyed watching your boating vlogs. I've been boating, living, and working on boats most of my life, and have watched a lot of narrow boat vlogs. Yours have been top quality, far better than some vlogs done by full time boaters. It's a bit of a shame you were just on holiday!!

This adventure is so cool as it reminds me of the "Gyption" people from Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials books, The Golden Compass in particular, who lived and traveled on long boats through canals in an alternate British dimension. Lyra Silver Tongue would've been so proud of you.

Every gate on the British waterways are made by hand, because all the locks are different sizes. If that broken gate cannot be fixed, they may have to close the canal early in the season. Every gate is under scheduled replacement as it takes a year or more to build them. In December, canals start closing down for gate maintenance and infrastructure. A retired BBC reporter lived and filmed the canals for 5 years, and now that he is off the canals, he is still filming short documentaries about the canals. His KZbin channel is Cruising the Cut. It was the first of many I watch, including one by a man from Whistler who bought a narrowboat. I learned a lot about the canals by watching these channels. And this year was bad for running aground. One couple were stuck for 3 days in the middle of a low canal.
