I am sorry, but pushing both hips back to open them up for the downswing swing is too difficult for me to do.. I am 77 years old and needed a better way to start my downswing I RECENTLY SAW THAT BOBBY JONES YEARS AGO SAID TO START THE DOWNSWING BY SIMPLY TWITCHING/ FIRING THE LEAD HIP. AND THIS SINGLE ACTION WILL AUTOMATICALLY SUPPLY EXPLOSIVE POWER TO DO THE DOWNSWING IN LESS THAN 1/3 rd OF A SECOND. I promise as long as your hips are good this works! Cheers 🥂😊👍

this is a good explanation. The key thing is that your right hip HAS TO COME OFF THE WALL for the left hip to move back. You cant do one without the other. Too many other videos talk about just keeping your hips back and its impossible to get left hip depth without letting your right hip rotate out. Just don't "hump" the ball.

I see this was done in November 2023. I think you have a more recent one in April 2024 on the same thing, but using the mental image of the left or lead glute pushing back against a hand that is pushing your flute forward. You also explain the role of the left or lead foot exerting horizontal torque to push the left or lead hip back against the hand, which automatically creates rotation. That was a super valuable lesson. Much easier to hold in your mind as you prepare to start your backswing that you will push back with your lead foot on the downswing and that will push the lead hip back automatically, and create rotation automatically. That from the 7:23 ground up sequence works much better than trying to think about pulling the lead hip back all by itself unconnected to foot pressure. Besides, the invisible hand is more fun to have in mind than a clunky chair or a solid wall. !!! Finally, many thanks for both this and the newer one, I put the hand image to work at the indoor practice bay I go to and when done right it adds 2 to 4 mph higher ball speed and 5 - 10 yds more carry with my 7 iron. So thank you.

You certainly are no bum as a golf instructor. In fact, you continue to show that you are the finest golf teacher in the world. So much of proper rotation, footwork, and spine angle in the downswing comes from this position. Once referred to as "The Snead Squat." It is the position every top player gets into that I've ever seen. Without exception. Your focus on this primary position is a fast track to success. Keep sending these marvelous videos. I've been taught the reverse K right sided swing method by my pro recently , because I have a really bad hip, but it doesn't work at all for the driver, so now, when I go for the driver, I've got a horrible slice that's come into my game, instead of the straight or draw shot I used to get. It's hard to have one swing for one club and another for others, but this drill could just save my driver again! Thank you for making the video!

Chair drill and everything are great ones but they are not easy with the ball. Since I tried to keep my "chest over the ball" feeling, my hip depth has been zero problem. If your chest stays over the ball, the hips stay back almost automatically. Much easier to learn in my opinion. But very good and simple explanation in this video 👍.

A very simple explanation of the kinematic sequence and the relationship (separation) between the pelvis and the thorax. For those with reasonable hip flexibility and right hip anterior tilt, squatting is definitely a necessary movement during the downswing to create the “space” for the hand path as well as avoid the dreaded pelvic thrust (aka early extension ) but for those who over-squat, the risk of S-posture when the hips are pushed back too deep will adversely limit the rotation, particularly from P6 to Impact.

I learned this concept from another KZbinr, but he didn't have any drills to follow. So , to get the feel I would setup without the club, crisscross my arms in front with my hands on opposite shoulders, a few inches in front of a wall so when I turned on the backswing my right butt cheek touched the wall. Initiating my downswing was a slight crouch and bringing my left cheek to the wall, so both cheeks were touching the wall. I still practice this to get the feel for the downswing.

Ive got the turn aspect of the golf swing down and hit some pretty decent straight drives. I have seen one of your videos where you talk about hinging wrists which was a good video but slightly confused as body rotation for myself takes the feel from my hands to body rotation but deliberately hinging wrist puts the feel into the hands... should the feel be in the core rotation or should the swing be hand feeling driven... or should it he shift - turn/set wrists (and forget wrists) then shift and turn through impact... intetested to know your opinion...

I had this conscious thought throughout my range session, only been golfing 3 months but I’ve got from on a 7i slicing to around 110 yards to a slight hook as for as 150 yards. Which is bloody amazing, and my fw is all of a sudden easier to hit and I got it to nearly 200 yards today- so thank you. However I am really struggling with driver? Is it the same motion?

I've never seen this before. I think it'll make a big difference too because I have this right arm arm -wrestling over the top move thanks to should rotator cuff issues. Can I practice this move using a pitching wedge? I only have 80 yards to work with in my practice area so I was hoping I can practice this given that it's not quite a full swing? Thanks and New Sub here!!

That’s amazing to hear! Yes, you can practice this with a 80 yard shot and in fact I would say that’s a better way of practising as it makes it more manageable for your brain

Is maintaining knee flex throughout the swing another way of accomplishing this? You certainly can't keep the hips back if you straighten out your knees, especially the right one at the top of the swing.
@Gilesgillgolf7 ай бұрын
No the knees need to change flex. It’s a blend of losing flex & reflexing. See one of my latest video where it says it’s all in the ones.

More than likely the position you’re in at the top isn’t correct. If your pelvis has turned correctly & your pivot is solid then you should be able to shift without thinking

I think we're on the cusp of major correction - and thus improvement - in golf instruction, like the one that occurred when the traditional model of ball flight laws was proven incorrect In the 90s. Today the issue is hip movement - turns out that trying to rotate your hips as fast and as much as possible to initiate the downswing is not good advice.

I have to disagree with Trafyknits in his opinion of the golf swing. It is true that there are only a very few super elite players. But almost ANYBODY can vastly improve their golf swing. Even the tour pros will tell you that as much as 80 percent of the golf swing is strong fundamentals. Grip, stance, and alignment. MOST OF ALL, HAVING THE DESIRE TO IMPROVE. The majority of golfers grab a club haphazardly and go at it. With little or no regard in building an end result. That's fine if you don't care about playing well. The great Ben Hogan said in his book five lessons that almost anyone can shoot golf in the Seventies. Not scratch necessarily. But consistently break 80. Watch an expert like this marvelous young instructor like Giles Gill. Follow it and apply it. Abd your game will improve. And approve. I know one thing. You're on the right channel if you want to get better.

An interesting concept but I'm left confused by the video. I get that you have to accentuate to get the point across but what you do in your swing appears very different to what you talk about previously. The movement you discuss is not one I'd attempt because (as you can see in the video) it brings your head closer to the ball which is going to result in the club contacting the ground before the ball. When you hit the ball you don't appear to move your hip relative to your initial stance, essentially maintaining your initial position through the swing. So I'm not sure what approach I should be taking here?
@Gilesgillgolf Жыл бұрын
You have to realise feel verses real are two different things. I might feel like i push my hips back a yard but they might only move an inch. Pretty much all tour pros drop down and lose height in the downswing. Once they do this then they explode up just prior and through impact. Now if you want to swing it slow and rely on your arms then don’t do this move but you’ll struggle to move
@Calzonii09 Жыл бұрын
As someone who plays off scratch, I can also say that if you’re not focussing entirely on hip depth you’re not ever going to achieve any consistency with your ball striking. It is imperative to striking the ball well. Your club contact is altered by ball position (hitting up on the driver with ball off the left heel) and down (for irons and wedges) by moving the ball back in the stance. Hip depth should remain constant in any shot.

Very important to understand that early extension is actually a functional movement to help square the face. If people don’t understand how to square the face the body is GOING to compensate. You can’t not so although for advanced players the chair can be helpful (I’m scratch and use this) for a weekend hacker this is not going to work. You need to have a square face in order to maintain shaft lean and actually use that space. 😊
