Since this guide is a bit dated, to anybody looking for a large pad trade ship who doesn't know: Large landing pad considerations (Anaconda, Cutter, Type-9): Anaconda: Big jump range, lowest cargo. Max cargo: 470t Outfitted: 400-420t Playstyle/usefulness: This ship is a god tier source and return ship outside of a wing. It can grind ANY loop because no jump range will really be an issue. you can snipe the best deals which (somewhat) makes up for the low cargo space. It can be a serviceable bulk trading ship, and outfitted properly no pirate will give you any issues. Pros: Does missions insanely well. Great jump range that makes trading a breeze. Can dual role passenger missions. Can be outfitted for a lot of things. Cons: The lowest cargo space of all. As a dedicated freighter, it falls short. But in my head this is the opportunist freighter. It takes money whenever it sees it. A bit awkward to fly at first, but all the big freighters are. Type-9: Cargo space above all Max Cargo: 790t Outfitted: 740-756 Playstyle/usefulness: This is THE freighter. Cargo space. It cares about cargo space and nothing else. Your jump range is ass, it moves like a sloth, and it definitely won't be winning any fights. But you just /print/ money. If you love the idea of being a space trucker like I do, you'll find yourself loving this ship BECAUSE of these things. Properly outfitted, you're actually surprisingly able to survive a lot of sketchy situations. I've managed to escape gankers in my type-9 (running about 800 shields and using military grade armor granted), so don't worry about this being a piece of paper. Not advised to grind missions, because escaping interdictions will hold you up. If you just want a dedicated freighter to grind trade routes occasionally: this is your ship. Pros: Cheap. Holds the most cargo space in /most/ situations. Available without grinding ranks. Cons: Dedicated freighter and nothing else without specific builds. Bad jump range when properly outfitted. Handles like garbage. Hard to escape from interdictions. Cutter: Cargo, jump range, shields. Max Cargo: 794 Outfitted: 700-712 Playstyle/usefulness: This is the freighter where you laugh at poors while flying through the mail slot. Requires grinding imperial ranks but is 100% worth it. You might notice that the cargo dips substantinally: thats because you /have/ to have this ship outfitted with shields. Scuffing the paint on this ship will cost you, and not taking advantage of having the most shields in the game makes taking advantage of the piddly 4t advantage essentially useless. You want those shields. On my cutter, I have a whopping 4k. Enough to tank.. Well.. Basically anything. You have /amazing/ forward speed. making this ship capable of escaping most threats. This ship can only get mass locked by another cutter, so in addition to the speed, shields, and cargo space.. If you want to do a cg in open, here's your ship. Putting weapons on this certainly makes for a fun way to grind materials, as you'll be able to shoot most pirates dead if you choose to grind missions... And on that note, you can clear out a mission board like nobodys business. While the jump range isn't in the anacondas range, its far better than the type-9. On mine I can get a solid 31ly while laden. making it a pretty good middle ground between the two. Pros: Gorgeous. Stupid shields. Insane cargo space. incredibly fast forward speed. Can run delivery missions and source missions like nobodys business. Cons: Insanely expensive. Requires grinding imperial ranks. Will set you back a /lot/ if you take hull damage, and you'll be eating a huge insurance cost if you happen to die. I have all three, and I use all of them tbh. The type-9 almost gets invalidated by the cutter.. But that extra 50t cargo space makes a difference on trade routes. It really depends on what you want out of your freighter. For me: I mostly fly my cutter and anaconda. Anaconda for passenger missions/delivery and sometimes bulk trade loops, and the cutter for source and return, delivery mission stacking and bulk trade loops when I want to merk an npc pirate. 2021 edit: I feel like for the most part this still holds past fleet carriers. The only thing I would add is that its a pretty substantial con that both he Conda and the Cutter will require a lot of engineering because of their utility slots, a detail I glossed over in my original write up. The type-9 has 4 utility mounts compared to the cutter and condas 8, and that will be a lot of shield booster engineering. Cargo delivery missions are still around, but are as of writing, kind of in a state of flux. My post was made at a time where you could fill up pretty much any of these ships with cargo delivery missions, which still occurs regularly, but its not a given as much. Source and return missions are still big money makers. At the time of writing it was before the buff to bounty payouts. I think if you enjoy the odd npc merking, you have much more to gain than mats. The type-9s cargo space will outpace the Conda in bulk trading even with bounties, but definitely a consideration with the type-9 vs. cutter.

I'd add that considering the Cutter has much better SC handling (which makes evading interdictions actually feasible), the slight difference in cargo (44T in my case, or 696T vs T-9's 740T) is negligible at that point. Time is money, and this is only 6% less cargo. A typical loop route between two stations (

@markhackett2302
@markhackett2302 6 жыл бұрын
The type 7 would be just about better IF it were just a tiny bit shorter, because its height means it cannot fit in a Medium dock (too tall), despite being very much smaller than the python in the other two dimensions. If it were 2m shorter, then it's perfect: you choose either to go for trade purely or pay more and get the ability to re-purpose in the same ship. To lose Medium docking capabilities means the T7 really does need to have more cargo. if one of the class 5s became a class 6, then it would get about 12% more cargo space in exchange for being locked out of a lot of stations. The cost of multirole capacility can be written off as the compromise against being trade only.

Pretty bizarre to see the Orca in this list, unless you consider passengers as cargo. The cobra MK3 should certainly be in the entry level class. As a matter of fact, it's one of the best trade ships because it can defend itself well against pirates. Piracy is a great problem amongst traders as you may know.
@arizona_anime_fan
@arizona_anime_fan 6 жыл бұрын
the Orca is a joy to fly, pretty looking, and thanks to engineering can basically do whatever you want with it. It's a really cheap ship too when you consider how much it costs to spec out for whatever you're using it for. Bought one for passengers a long time ago, and it's quickly become one of my favorite ships in ED. Of course the Python is a better trader. But the python is a horrible bird for flying, it handles like a brick (same with the Krait). To me, ED is about space flight, and if you can't enjoy flying your bird, there is little point to playing the game. So while ships like the Python, Krait and 'Conda are popular ships, I generally avoid them like the plague as I dislike the view from the cockpit (in the python/conda), and really dislike the handling (in all 3 cases). Imp Clipper/Courier, Orcas, AspX and the FDL are at the top of my favorite ships, and of the big three my favorite to fly is the iClipper (not unengineered), if we're talking unengineered the Corvette is a better ship, once we start talking Engineered, the iClipper quickly becomes my fav of the big 3, as it's biggest weakness (turning) vanishes, and it's biggest strength (shields and straight line speed) become absolute advantages over every other big ship out there. Yes the Corvette turns fast, and can punch harder then the Clipper, but the clipper will sport x3-x4 times the shielding making it's endurance in a fleet battle much better, and it can shoot forever making it's DPS basically the same. Learn to fly without assist and the Clipper is an agile beast in a messy battle.
@gisterme2981
@gisterme2981 5 жыл бұрын
I must agree with you about the Cobra Mk3. IMO it's far and away the best trader in the (up to) 40-ton cargo-capacity class. More range, more speed and much better maneuverability than the others mentioned for that capacity class. With a little reconfiguration it can also become a magnificent long-range material-scavenger/explorer.

Interesting analysis. However, you missed a major selling point with the Python over the Type-7 (I used to fly a T-7 and now a Python). The Python can land on Medium pads and basically anywhere else. With a Type-7, you're restricted to large starports only. There's a lot of profitable trade routes that often run to outposts, and you can sometimes earn 100K or more in additional revenue when heading out there over being chained to a standard trade route between two giant stations.
@Ploskkky
@Ploskkky 5 жыл бұрын
Completely agree. When you fly a Python trader you will never have to worry about accessibility. You can go everywhere, take every mission, take every trade and haul and deliver your stuff to every station in the galaxy. The convenience is huge. And on top of that the Python is extremely versatile and you can use it in every role in the game. In my book the Python is a must have for every Elite player.

@@NetworKrakle Running a T9 is a lot different than a T7 or Python. It's a end-goal ship, while the other two are stopping points, with the exception of the Python being versatile. A T-9 about has quadruple the cargo space of any of those ships. Also, my comment was two years ago. Major overhauls to mission rewards have been made, and me hitting Trade Elite. If you take the right jobs, you can make almost 4 million or more in assigned cargo runs. Trade also varies with what you carry. As a relative newb I use an ASPx for cargo delivery missions until I can get to buying a big hauler. Fairly maxed out with cargo (64 + 32 + 8 + 4) but still have a small shield and I can carry 108T. It probably cost 20 mil total, so not that cheap, but fun to fly with A-class thrusters fitted and a decent jump range, . Puts it part way between the beginner list and the Orca/Python one. Hope this helps someone. Cheers.
@ToveriJuri
@ToveriJuri 7 жыл бұрын
You should use the lowest possible shield not the second highest. Anaconda can go to 452 cargo and type-9 to 500 in that setup. If your only worry is scraping off the station then the lowest possible shields are enough and the + 96 tons of cargo is a significant increase. With the lowest possible shield setup clipper is significantly better mid range ship than the orca and around the same price range as the type-7 It should be the one of the 3 alternatives not the orca. Also the jump range of a single jump is significantly more important than the maximum range per fuel tank if you want to be an efficient trader. Which is why many consider the anaconda to better than the type-9 even though type-9 gets around 50T more cargo. Another factor you should mention is also ship size. Medium sized ship can enter any landing pad while Large ships are restricted from trading with outposts which don't have a Large pad. This is especially important in Your intermediate list. Type-7 is much cheaper than the Python but with a rather similar cargo space, however Python is a medium ship while type-7 is large.

I have a type 9 and an anaconda but honestly I like flying the type 6 better. 100T 30ly Laden range, 570m/s boost and it turns great in supercruise and normal flight. I think they need to give smaller ships some short of advantage, Maybe increase their supercruise acceleration. It just sucks that every ship is so multipurpose because it makes all avenues lead basically to the anaconda :(

I wouldn't say that... All multipurpose ships lead to it as the best large multi purpose ship but I never got rid of my python and still use it. My cutter is for trade/mining/pirating and my Corvette is for combat/pirating. I still use many of my smaller ships for specialized things. Like I have a orca with a 59 ly jump range with fuel limpets repair limpets a healing beam and srvs for gathering materials planatery landings helping other commanders in trouble. I swap the fuel limpets for collection limpets and heal my wingmates while collecting materials in CZs or hazs sites. Let's not forget my imperial curiour with 47 ly a boost at like 600 and can land just about anywhere with a srv for finding those tough landing spots like gardian ruins. Or my fer de Lance designed to interdict and shred a single ship in seconds and bounce out after for PP merits.

I finally got my anaconda yesterday. I have several specialized ships for different tasks but that was the first true multirole that I had. I did some ceos/sothis runs grinding fed rank but I ended up flying it back home and selling it off for a python once I got my sol permit. While I see the draw of an anaconda, and it really can do everything, I just didn't like flying it. I hit the damn mail slot every single time (to the point I actually got a docking computer for it) and you never forget you're flying a huge ship. The bow is 20 miles long, and it handles like a bus without engineering. Maybe I'm just biased because my first three ships were an eagle, a cobra III, and a chieftain. I'm not used to the barges.

It seems that the best trade ships from a pure economics (tons/purchase cost) sense are the type-X class ships (hence the freighter designation). The Hauler/Adder would be your introduction ships and the Type-6 would be your first real trade ship. The mid range and expensive class best ships of python and cutter seem to be better trade ships based purely on cargo hold but from a ton/credit perspective you are paying for that multipurpose tag. The cutter and anaconda to me are more "end game" class ships comparing the price tag jump between type 7 and type 9's to that of Python to Anaconda/Cutter. If you are purely trading you might as well even skip Python in your ship progression. This makes the 9, imo, the best trade ship until you get to that "end game" status and can get a cutter. Though, I'm probably going to get the Anaconda first chance I can afford both it and enough re-buys to not be terrified of flying it. Enjoy your objective, logical comparison of ships. Been a big help with my entry into the game.

I agree with most of what you have said. With exception to the Type-9 Heavy vs. The Anaconda. It would make much more "practical sense" to have the Anaconda for long distances since it has the higher jump distance. I don't know about you but I'd rather have less jumps with having to fuel scoop a star here and there then have such a tiny jump distance. That's my thought on the subject. Great video and very informative! Thx, cheers.

That is a fair point. But If you need to fit a fuel scoop of an acceptable size you will loose some of the cargo space. unless you fit a very under-sizes scoop which will slow you down since you have to spent a long time scooping (and overheating). But I completely understand your point of view and i guess it all comes down to matter of play style :-)

If your trade route exceed 3 or 4 jumps I'd say it's a bad trade route and so trade ships shouldn't have fuel scoops. With engineered FSD Anaconda completely trumps the type-9 and well even without it. The time it takes to travel from one station to another is very important and Anaconda has the most lucrative trade route options thanks to the long jump range allowing for larger area that you can travel within 3 jumps.

I think you should take into account the fact that you need a pretty high rank in both the federation and empire to get the corvette or cutter. You'd probably have to spend less time trading and doing other missions to get the ranks making them less profitable than a type-9 in the long term

Is there an updated version of this? I'm curious as to why the Clipper wasn't included. I know it's technically a large ship but I think it's kind of "in between" like the Type 6 was. Mine isn't set up quite the same as your test and it's been engineered a little. But it has more capacity than the Type 7, better jump range, and only costs a little more. I do only run a 3C shield, but I don't fight with it so I don't see the need for more. Even with all the flight assist modules and a fuel scoop I manage 220 tons of cargo.

The T9 can now hold more than 700 tons ! Take this in mind henceforth :D I used to take the Conda to trade, but know i use an almost stockT9, just lot of cargo bays and a 6A FSD, the rest is stock: 700 tons with an average of 11Ly jumps, not optimise at all. The Cutter still the king :D I think an optimise T9 for trade could be very competitive with an optimize cutter for trade. No guns, no useless stuff, the minimum weight, the maximum Jumping range, the maximum Cargo, every modules upgraded for a better Jumping rang, etc... A Very optimize T9 must be a very good ship now. Mine have 736T, 30LY jump range unladen and 18LY loaded, few things at grade 5, and the total cost is 90M, compare this to a Cutter...
@SynchronizorVideos
@SynchronizorVideos 2 жыл бұрын
The Cutter only beats the Type-9 in capacity if you put cargo racks in every single slot. And even then, the difference is tiny. If you build either to actually be practical traders rather than just min/maxing cargo space on a spreadsheet, the Type-9 is equal to or better than the Cutter in moving cargo - especially if you want some shields. My Type-9 is a beast; it can jump 25 - 30ly with ~700t of cargo (depending on the exact setup), while also carrying a number of convenience features and enough offense & defense to handle pretty much any NPC threat. I've earned billions flying this thing, and crushed every community goal I've participated in.

If you want to do trading missions of "take that stuff and bring it to xy" the python is by far the best trading ship. Maximum cargo space at medium size pad landing abillity. So, you get much more money than taking a type 7 which only can take "Pad size L-missions".

Will there ever be a 2020 update for this? It seems like nowdays the cutter and the buffed T9 rules the trading game, the python still rules the mid class and the cheap ships is still the type 6. Pretty much everything on the list has changed in terms of jump range with engineering and even cargo capacity. Even ships like the cutter can reach 30+ly jump range with engineering and almost 790 tons of cargo

Why do you have the type 9 listed at 404 t? It has 8/8/7 plus 6s... If using the 8e cargo x2... It hauls 512 cargo plus a 7shield.

You missed a very popular choice in the mid-range trader category, and a ship that is often referred to as a better choice than the type 7 (but on balance, is locked behind rank), the Imperial Clipper. At first I thought you skipped it because it's rank-locked, but since you later go on about Cutter and Corvette, that's obviously not the reason. I don't think the Clipper can be skipped when talking about ships good for trading in ED, it offers great cargo capacity while also being very fast and reasonably well armed for it's class and size, meaning that it can keep your cargo much safer than the T7 ever could, even after it was buffed. Dirty drives G5 on the clipper's thrusters and nobody's catching you after interdiction. Another thing to consider when talking about traders is the ability to dock at outposts - you may find the T7 a superior trader to the Python based on cargo capacity vs. price, but the Python can land anywhere, which is quite an advantage. Some may find this less relevant, some more, but the point is that ship comparisons like these are a bit more complex than just price vs. cargo capacity vs. range.

@junkiexl86
@junkiexl86 7 жыл бұрын
Actually, it's not a stupid question. For its price bracket, Beluga can be quite the trader. It hauls more than the Type 7 and Python. Only the Type 9 hauls more sub 100 million, but thanks to its abysmal laden jump range and high mass of the Type 9, the Beluga will make up for the inferior cargo space in the fact it can jump almost 2x the distance modded, So long as FD still allows players to slot cargo racks in the reserved compartments that is. Haven't looked since 2.3 went live.
@junkiexl86
@junkiexl86 7 жыл бұрын
Nah, it's higher than that. You can slot cargo racks in the reserved slots. giving you (3/3/3/3/4/5/5/6/6/6/6) of compartment space. Max theoretical cargo space of 368T if my math serves.

Wait... what...? I think your max jump ranges are a bit off for the smaller ships (Hauler, Adder and Type 6). I am in Keltim now, and most of my stuff is stored at Tollan. From what I am understanding from this, I could simply use a Type 6 as a damn exploration ship because of the 113.59 ly jump range, and the distance to where I am wanting to go is only 100.89 ly away... that literally sounds like one jump. From what I am understanding. Looking at the intermediate ships, I can fit 300 tons on my Type 7, and by no means can it go 120.75 ly. It is a very good chance that this was changed recently, and it would make sense to me... and thus my confusion is at an end. At best, I'm late for the party...

Python is not a trade ship, it's multipurpose, if you include that you should have included the cobra in the entry level range. Also an Orca is a luxury liner, not a trade ship. Yes you can use these ships for trade but the point of your discussion was to highlight the best trade ships in Elite, not the best ships to trade in which are two fundamentally different points.

Ok first off where is the Cobra Mk3?? Following your rules for trade ships: 44 tonne cargo capacity, 21.85Ly per laden jump with a range of 126.19Ly on a full tank. So twice the capacity of the Adder, two light years more per jump and, a third more range all for just 1.8 million. And unlike the Type-6 she's one of the fastest boosting ships in the game. in the mid range, no mention of the Asp Explorer?? Following your rules for trade ships she carries 96 tonnes of cargo 26.54Ly fully laden jump and a max fully laden travel distance of 183.26 light years. This for just over 11 million credits. I'd also like to point out that both the Orca and the Type-7 are large pad ships and, as such cannot land at outposts. Something both the Asp Explorer and Python can do.
