Thank you Stacy for not only making tutorials like this for us like always but also for sharing your little tricks and techniques that can't really be found in any patterns or designs but can play crucial parts in making the final products perfectly flawless. Your generosity is much appreciated please always know that.

I made this for my sister in law with Black top and sides and a Teal brim, it fit her perfectly and she loved it! She downloaded me photos of yarns she likes and wants more Downton Abbey Hats. Thank you so much for the directions! It's a winner, Big Time.

Yes - when you see "K0" or "P0" in a pattern, that means that you have no stitches to work (for the size you are knitting). For example, the instructions for different sizes in a pattern are usually written out like this "Knit 2 (3, 4, 5, 6)" - meaning the smallest size knits 2, the next size knits 3, the next size knits 4, and so on. Sometimes you will see zero for your size.

Whoops - thank you, I forgot to add that info. The yarn is Berroco Alpaca Light. I just added a link in the video description.

Re knit vs. purl on brim: I did a wrap-and-turn on the first stitch of this section. When you turn the work you are essentially knitting what will become the inside of the folded-up brim. I knit that whole section, and voila, purl stitches on the outside of the brim when turned up. I don't really mind purling, but it was good to find out how well this works!

For some reason everything I've made I have used a book until I saw your videos! I no longer need a book to go line by line with a ruler. Ah, freedom. Thank you Staci and Merry Christmas lady! I think you have that rarest of abilities to just cut through all the "red tape" and get right down to the matter which makes it so much less confusing for me.

I think the knitting or purling of the brim is dependent on the type of knitter you are. I would have chosen knits when I throw but as a picker now, I'd go with the purls as they are faster than throwing. I like this hat ... so great you've created a tutorial for it. Thanks! Plus, I didn't know about those bamboo needles, went to the site and bought a pack. Whoohoo!

First let me say that I love your videos! And now let me say that I'm sure I'll love this one as well but I had to pause at about 1:28 to express my joy upon learning that I am not alone in my detestation of the purl stitch. It just feels so awkward for some reason and my tension is always too tight. *Thank you* for modifying this pattern so the 32,000 rows of brim will be knitted, not purled!

Im making regular top down hat that start from the center then become circular.funny thing is the center piece fit the crown allright but when i did the side tube ,the number doesnt match and stitch need to decreased to fit.this type of flat crown knit in square is huge relief.

I need a little clarification on the alteration to the written pattern please. Per Staci's alterations after knitting the square of double moss stitch, you knit one more row so that you are on the right side of the work instead of the wrong side as the pattern says. Is that correct? Is this what sets you up to work the hat right side out?

When picking up stitches around the top square anyone with an afghan hook in the right size could use that and then transfer to regular circular needles. I have a set of the Interchangeables, so all I have to do is change the attached needle end and then change it back.

Could I just say that much as I love your tutorials - the subtitles are extremely difficult to read - white on yellow is really hard, and I value subtitles because my hearing is poor! I have to keep rewinding the video to ensure I get things right....Anything you could do to improve the visual of the subtitles would be very much appreciated!

You may need to adjust your subtitle settings - default is white lettering on a black background. In the subtitles menu you can change it back to white on black.

Stacy, I am done with the double moss portion, and about to switch to the ribbing. I am knitting this per the "baby" sizing. Have you knit this in the baby size? I matched my gauge and it looks like it far to big for a baby (though I don't have one so I am speculating). I think it might be possible that my stitches are TALLER than it has asked for. But if my stitch count is, and my row measurement is off, what do I do??
@verypinkknits10 жыл бұрын
Allie - I suggest you contact the pattern designer directly, and/or look at the comments on Ravelry from other knitters who have made that size. Those resources will be the most help to you. Good luck!

@onnaaddis79838 жыл бұрын
dearest Staci, this is my third try for the Downton hat for some reason whatever I was doing on my swap didn't match how it turned out I'm wondering the Center Square which it starts with for the top is the whole trick behind it it needs to measure an exact like 5 and 1/2 by 5 and 1/2 or 6x6 I need to be able to go by what it supposed to be when it's done so I can carefully watch it and stop in time on the correct side you know what I mean? So what is the exact measurement it should be it regardless of what size needles what size yarn you need a square being what when you stop and then you're going to pick up 20 stitches each side going around and then go into your pattern work again right please tell me I'm right because all these other ways of measuring have not come out correctly I don't know why could be the lighting in here any ideas be appreciated XOXO to my favorite pattern maker and designer Onna Addis
@verypinkknits8 жыл бұрын
If you check your gauge, the pattern states, "Gauge: Approximately 24 stitches and 40 rows to a 4 inch/10cm square in double moss stitch." You can use that to determine what the size of the top of the hat should be exactly, depending on the size you're knitting. This actually isn't my design, I just did the tutorial. Most questions on the pattern are answered on the designer's website here: www.anniecholewa.com/p/downton-hat.html

Stacey,I have a question: Knitted in flat using moss stich, checked my tension and had to go to 3.75mm needles and achieved tension,my problem is and I frogged the work,is that when I finish and pick up stiches,the square or top of the hat is too small,it does not say in the pattern to keep knitting moss st after picking up,it says to do the rib. I am very confused as I love this hat and want to knit it. If you could give me some guidance I appreciated it.
@verypinkknits4 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry, I don't understand your question...in the video I demonstrate these parts of the hat, please watch them again, I hope they help you!

The pattern does tell to continue the moss stitch after picking up the stitches, for 18-28 rows depending on size.

Do you make a gauge swatch every time you make a garment
@verypinkknits8 жыл бұрын
+Phyllis Loaiza - yes, unless it's a small garment (hat, mittens, etc), then it's easier to just start knitting, and measure gauge. It's especially important to wash and block your swatch before measuring and checking gauge when you're knitting sweaters, to make sure you get a good fit.

I love this hat and your tutorials :) After 20+ years of using straight needles, with video tutorials I've learned circular and chose the Magic Loop which gives me the extra movement space (if that makes sense?) that's similar to how much I have when using straight needles. Can I use ML with this pattern? I'm just learning about adapting from DPNs and regular circular so I'm not sure. Thanks so much. I can't wait to try this. Oh, forgot to ask, I'd love to use a thicker yarn either like the bulky you use or with some Malabrigo Mecha which I bought. will it work just adjust the gauge? It's freezing in upper state NY!
