20:49 the Target store Redline MAX Rail stop I knew best....as a tourist last November, I honestly didn't feel safe getting off the train until at least this far. I didn't mind exploring west and north of this location....but everything along the Left bank of the Willamette River up until the Target....so much graffiti, so many homeless folks including some clearly mentally disturbed individuals....I wandered around Union Station and found a convenience store because I wanted to buy some local craft beer and take it back to my hotel fridge....obviously nothing happened and I made it back safely, but it was a scary walk I didn't feel eager to repeat. I even saw one homeless woman scream at an Asian man and physically assault him near the convention center. He fled and she didn't chase him down but just sat down cursing and being a nuisance. I steered clear of her and gave her a wide berth. I enjoyed my brief stay in Portland, but it was a matter of staying vigilant and hyper aware of your surroundings in ways I've never felt necessary in downtown Houston, say. There are sections of Seattle that tourists shouldn't wander into either that my friends who live there cautioned me about; I mapped them out for myself for Portland and made a conscious effort to stay out of those areas. The homeless seem more concentrated on the left bank of the river....they are on the right bank side too but in fewer numbers and less concentrated. I do wish the city would house and help these people because the status quo definitely hurts tourism and local commerce.

Hi! Thank you for this. What day of the week is this? I mean, it looks so empty, very few people walking. Not much life. Is this normal? I mean, I would have expected a downtown area to be busy with people walking, tourists, etc. Thank you again!

Portland gets such a bad wrap. The crime isn’t even close to bad compared to most comparable cities. I currently live in Houston which has 2-3 times more crime per capita. My cousin lives in Memphis which has 6 times more crime per capita. A bit of research shows Portland isn’t even in the top 25 worst cities for crime. Same with homelessness. The only state in Oregon that is in the top 20 for homelessness is Eugene. Portland has its problems and it has its homeless issues. But so does every other major US city. The only difference is that for so long Portland has managed to avoid these big city problems that have plagued urban America for decades. Which makes the citizens panic and over reach when they start to see things that most of us have always been dealing with. Portland has about 500 crimes per 100,000 residents. Compare that to my current city houston which has out 1300 or where my cousin lives Memphis which has 2300 crew per 100,000 lol Perspective is always important when complaining about a cities problems. The right wing Medias obsession with Portland also doesn’t help its perception. I wonder why they don’t focus on a city like Birmingham Alabama which has 4 times more crime then PDX does? Context and perspective matter people. Portland is a beautiful city that fell on bad times in 2020, but it’s improving and will continue to do so. But if your going to spread false narratives about this city, I won’t stop you. It keeps the idiots away 🤷

Have lived in Portland for 9 years now and have seen the city decay exponentially in recent years. Saying, "This city isn't as bad as all these other awful cities!" isn't much of an argument. I also had the misfortune of living in an area where Antifa decided to riot on a weekly basis in 2020 and watched as a giant mass of people vandalized with impunity because the city officials did nothing about it. Your "false narratives" BS might work on others, but when this stuff happened literally right outside my window, I'm not going to let you spread a false narrative that nothing is wrong.
