Great video, thanks for sharing. How hard do you find the 1180 to paddle up compared to 1401? I am debating which foil to get for small wave sup foil and probably some downwind. I had the 1201 for lightwind winging, but did not like the locked in feel and slow turning. Swapped it for SF960 that feels great lightwind winging, but will be too small for learning downwind.

I currently find the 1180 requires more paddle power to get off the water in bumps. In flat water I’ve never managed to paddle up the 1180 where as I can consistently get up the 1401… it’s still bloody difficult. Small waves these days id use the 1180 as it allows a bit tighter turns, and will be slightly easier to manage… but if it’s tiny the 1401 will have more pump and earlier lift and you can get up much earlier on the swell. Learning to dw the 1401 is likely better but it’s a bigger version of the 1201, if you felt locked in before it will feel the same to you. Those songs are gliders and you get the most out of them if you approach them as such, there’s possibly nothing better for glide out there currently… but of you try to throw them around like your small spitfire you’ll be disappointed. The key to the big foils is understanding that they are in fact big foils and using them for the glide. Now that I personally have a lot of time on the 1201/1401 I find they easily turn enough for downwinding and even enough to be fun. What really loosens them up is a small A+ fuse and small rear foil. There is compromise to be had unfortunately especially in the learning stages. Learning to dw is hard and you need to go through the stages, the first stage is the biggest foil you can get your hands on, most people still begin on the png1300 (talk about compromising) 🤙🤙

@@downwind_drifter1040 Thanks a lot for a comprehensive reply. I was lucky to try the 1180 today winging. Used Adv+ silly and skinny 35. It felt draggy, but manouvrable and easy to ride. I was out on a 7x20 board and a 4,2 and I was the last one off the water as the wind died off. It will take som time to adjust to a bigger foil. My last session was on a 851, so the differens is huge. The conditions was shit, really messy as hundreds of sailboats was passing and sub 10kts wind. Conclution is that I probably can adjust to this foil and that is probably will be a good tool to start to struggle with the paddle. I not, I just have to get the 1401 as well (hope not).I am probably looking for different abilities in a foil downwinding with a paddle. Thanks again for the insight and inspiration.
