Today, come with me to spend Easter together in Greece during the pandemic.
This year we enjoy the Easter. Wecould go to the church, with masks of course, we could see our families and friends and we really had a nice time. The restaurants were closed but we cooked at home altogether.
This video is a different video because I’m going to show you my Holy week until Easter Sunday.
However I tried to speak as slow as I couls and to use common words and phrases in order to be easier for you.
SUBTITLES AVAILABLE : GREEK, ENGLISH
TRANSCRIP AVAILABLE: GREEK , ENGLISH
I started the video on Holy Wednesday and we went to buy ‘’tsoureki’’ which is a kind of traditional greek bread and ‘’lambada’’ which is the name of the Easter greek candle.
On Holy Thursday we painted the eggs together. Painting the eggs red is a very common orthodox custom, to do it on Holy Thursday . The red colour represents Jesus’ blood.
Holy Friday is the most sorrowful day of Orthodox Church , the death of Jesus. In Greece the bells ring mourning the whole day .
People grovel in front of the ‘’Epitaph’’ and the evening the procession of the Epitaph takes place.
Unfortunately I couldn’t show you this in the video. As I heard later, the procession took place about 9pm only in the yard of the church.
The Resurrection event normally takes place at midnight on Holy Saturday, but this year it was at 9pm. I ‘m so happy that I managed to catch the fireworks too!! To go there you need a ''lambada'' which is the Easter candle. The tradition says that every baptised Christion needs to have one that night, in order to light it up with the Holy light.
After the Resurrection we ate the traditional dish of the day which is called ‘’magiritsa’’ and we clinked the eggs , something we do because it symbolizes the ‘’life’’. Because I don’t like the traditional recipe , we made some kind of ‘’magiritsa’ . Mine was made with chicken!!
On Sunday we ate with our family the traditional lamb , but not on the spit as Greeks do, because we don’t have something like this in our house. We made it in the oven and it was delicious. And of course we drunk ''retsina''
I hope you liked this video. It was a different video for my channel but it was important to me to show you the Greek Easter traditions!
I wish you all the best!! I wish you to have a beautiful summer and next year to be in a greek island for Easter !!
