-First of all Greeks believe in the’’evil eye’’! We think that we need to be protected, that’s why a common gift , especially to newborn babies would be a beautiful blue eye !
That’s why we make ‘’ξεμάτιασμα’’ . What does it mean?
It means that we find ways to push away that evil eye. I remember my grandmother had some weird stones and every time she wanted to keep the evil eye away , she had a glass full of water with the stones and you had to drink 3 times.
Other people do ‘’ξεμάτιασμα’’with water and oil and / or prayers.
- Did you know that the most ‘’bad luck’’ day in Greece is not Friday 13, but Tuesday 13?
Why?
Because The fall of Constantinople (Istanbul) took place on Tuesday 29 of May of 1453!
But how did the number of the year affect the ‘’bad luck ‘’ day?
- In Greece it’s a sign of bad luck too to see a black cat in the street.
My grandmother would spit in the blouse if she saw a black cat.
-Another superstition Greeks would believe is the broken mirrors . Did you know that you’ll have bad luck for 7 years if you break a mirror??
-Also if you see yourself in the mirror at night , then (my grandparents believe) you’ll become ugly!!
-My grandparents also used to say that if we whistle in the middle of the night we call the ghosts.
-The last one is the ‘’itching’’ . If you have an itching in your nose is bad , because ‘’ θα φας ξύλο’’. Somebody is going to beat you !!But if you have it in your hand then , you’ll get money!!!
