-First of all Greeks believe in the’’evil eye’’! We think that we need to be protected, that’s why a common gift , especially to newborn babies would be a beautiful blue eye !
That’s why we make ‘’ξεμάτιασμα’’ . What does it mean?
It means that we find ways to push away that evil eye. I remember my grandmother had some weird stones and every time she wanted to keep the evil eye away , she had a glass full of water with the stones and you had to drink 3 times.
Other people do ‘’ξεμάτιασμα’’with water and oil and / or prayers.
- Did you know that the most ‘’bad luck’’ day in Greece is not Friday 13, but Tuesday 13?
Why?
Because The fall of Constantinople (Istanbul) took place on Tuesday 29 of May of 1453!
But how did the number of the year affect the ‘’bad luck ‘’ day?
- In Greece it’s a sign of bad luck too to see a black cat in the street.
My grandmother would spit in the blouse if she saw a black cat.
-Another superstition Greeks would believe is the broken mirrors . Did you know that you’ll have bad luck for 7 years if you break a mirror??
-Also if you see yourself in the mirror at night , then (my grandparents believe) you’ll become ugly!!
-My grandparents also used to say that if we whistle in the middle of the night we call the ghosts.
-The last one is the ‘’itching’’ . If you have an itching in your nose is bad , because ‘’ θα φας ξύλο’’. Somebody is going to beat you !!But if you have it in your hand then , you’ll get money!!!

Excellent video you made and it was a lot of fun. I personally don't believe in superstitions. But it is heard in the shows about mirrors and cats as a parody. So just as you say, I know that when a mirror breaks, wherever the mirror breaks, for the person it is seven years of bad luck and if cats go under a ladder the same thing happens. But I think that these superstisions were more widespread in the grandparents or in their time. I think that is everywhere or at least in Greece. That I came to know because you mentioned words like: My grandmother says or my grandfather said. How wonderful to know all that about your country. Here now people do not believe so much in that. What people do believe is in charms or ornaments or figurines and incenses to attract money or attract more customers to sell more. Thanks for your video!!!!!! You are very funny and a very good Greek teacher!!!!!!. Forgive me for my many words. I want you to reach millions who see your Greek classes. We did not know if you believe in superstisions. You left us with the curiosity of that. I hope my writing in English has been excellent for you, but you will also have to teach us English. I liked the words in Greek that you put us inside the video.

We have some of the same superstitions in the U.S., e.g. seeing a black cat (if it crosses your path) or breaking a mirror. It's also considered bad luck to open an umbrella inside a house or to walk under a ladder. And if your ears itch, someone is talking about you, and if your nose itches, someone is going to visit you. These are ones that I remember hearing when I grew up in the U.S., although I've been in Europe for many years now. My parents never talked about superstitions. I don't think the evil eye is a common superstition from what I remember. Even in Spain where I live now, no one here ever talks about the evil eye, although maybe older generations did. Thank you for the great video! I particularly enjoyed the part about spitting for good luck and I remember seeing that in the film My Big Fat Greek Wedding.

Έχουμε και μια παροιμία που λέει: "Né di Venere né di Marte non si sposa né si parte, né si dà principio all'arte" (όυτε την Παρασκευή ούτε την Τρίτη μην παντρεύεσαι, μην ξεκινάς ταξίδια και μήν ξεκινάς σημαντικά έργα).

I remember when I was a little kid being told about breaking a mirror is 7 years bad luck. I live in America. I almost forgot about that. The Greeks have some interesting superstitions. I've heard of the "evil eye" in Jewish culture but didn't know there is a Greek version. Very interesting, thanks for the info!

I don't speak Greek, but I smile about the perfume thing. My mom has no such superstitions and I don't think she ever bought perfume in her life, but I remember her in airports and duty-frees explaining all the perfume and strange luxury items as things men bought their wives on business trip to stop them asking about their mistresses. I can never believe perfume just keeps on going like it does. So many people have allergies and it's sucha matter of taste.

There was always some way to tell that someone was talking about you, was going to give you money, etc. And there are so many ways to invite bad luck or even evil spirits according to the traditions she told me. Some of it, I think, was to keep me from hurting myself accidentally: certain unlucky ways to handle scissors, sit at the dining room table, etc. What about reading the φλιτζάνι after you finish your καφεδάκι?
