Here in Australia and New Zealand neither Split Enz or Crowded House were one hit wonders. Both bands had successful careers Down Under. There were hits from the first four Crowded House albums and their last confer on the forecourt of the Sydney Opera House came close to a spiritual experience for the tens of thousands that attended.
@gregstaples97175 күн бұрын
Totally agree. It was funny listening to the intro before he said the band’s name I was trying to guess who it was (as I always do on here) and I swear I got whiplash when I did a double take when he called them a “2 hit wonder”. I suppose it’s all about perspective- as an Aussie, Crowded House and Split Enz, were always a staple of the 80’s charts. I’m glad I was in Australia if it meant I may have otherwise missed out on them.

I was very lucky to have had the chance to spend the day with Crowded House in 1988. I was stationed in Mainz, West Germany and Crowded House came to play at a local music hall. I was given a day's leave, so I went down to the music hall in the morning. I had only waited a few minutes before their truck pulled up. Their road crew manager allowed me to help them out. Neil, Nick, and Paul arrived about 1:00pm. I was awestruck and tongue-tied when I was around Neil. They were touring for their second album "Temple of Low Men" at the time, and I had memorized every note and lyric, so I believed at that time, (and I still hold this belief), that Neil was one of the greatest songwriters of all time. His guitar playing was fascinating and mesmerizing. I remember talking to Nick Seymour for hours about music, growing up in America versus growing up Down Under. I remember wrestling with Paul Hester, until their manager came running up and screamed at me not to hurt their drummer. I got to harmonize with Neil during their rehearsal before the show, and was aloud to see them backstage just before the show. Their roadcrew manager told me that if I could get myself down to Australia after my gig with U.S. Army was over, I could work with their crew full time. That never happened, but I often wonder what would have happened if I had taken him up on the offer!

He was too shy to ask me out but he walked me home and carried my books, he asked me to our 20 year reunion and we were both newly divorced going with him was the best decision I ever made. Now when I listen to this song I hear nothing but determination and love funny how things change. Thank you for such a beautiful song that can evoke such emotions.

Listening to music as a kid in Australia in the late 70's and 80's was such a great time, we would not only get the "good stuff" from the States, Canada and the UK, but we would get a lot of great music from home and the Kiwi's that the rest of world seemed to miss out on. Split Enz was one of those amazing Kiwi bands that should have dominated the world in the early and mid 80's yet it never came together for them, but from the ashes of one great band came another, and they were able to achieve some international success with an amazing song and album. 'Don't Dream It's Over' is a masterpiece, one of the very best songs from a great decade of music and it's great to hear that it's loved and appreciated nearly 40 years later. Congrats Neil.

I saw Split Enz a few times in the mid 70’s with all of their weird make up, along with the amazing AC/DC with Bon Scott and also Skyhooks at Festival Hall in Melbourne Australia when I was 14. Mind was blown and it started a love affair for me with AC/DC and Bon, but later Crowded House came out with Message to My Girl, still one of my favourite songs of all time. Gosh we were so lucky!!!

THANK YOU SO MUCH!❤ Just when I thought I couldn't go higher, when you had Benny Mardones on, and Into The Night, brought me to tears of Joy...You hit it out of my park's heart, with Neil and Crowded House❣️ I am years older, but I swear to you, not only me, but millions of us instantly feel as strong in our hearts and soul, as we did first hearing Neil and Benny. THANK YOU SO MUCH ❤

I watched Crowded House live in Christchurch, NZ just four days ago. This is one of my favourite songs of all time. When Neil, now with his two sons Liam and Elroy in the band (How cool is that!) sang this it brought tears to the eyes, not through sadness but through the thrill of hearing it live in 2024, sung just like the original. Neil Finn and Crowded House are timeless.

Neil Finn is one of the greatest and most humble songsmiths of our time. I was a childhood fan of Split Enz and was saddened by that band's break-up. While a very different type of outfit, Crowded House quickly became another favourite of mine. Sadly, I'm yet to see them play live. I wish I'd gone to their Festival Hall concert in 1988... Much, much sadder was the tragic loss of drummer Paul Hester. I'm still yet to see Crowded House play live, although their farewell concert from Sydney Opera House was great on the telly! To see Neil reform the band with original bassist Nick Seymour, the original keyboard/organ player from the debut album recording, their brilliant producer and collaborator Mitchell Froom as well as Neil's two sons Liam and Elroy is such a beautiful thing. So many superb songs. One day, I will see them live. x
