Here in Australia and New Zealand neither Split Enz or Crowded House were one hit wonders. Both bands had successful careers Down Under. There were hits from the first four Crowded House albums and their last confer on the forecourt of the Sydney Opera House came close to a spiritual experience for the tens of thousands that attended.

Totally agree. It was funny listening to the intro before he said the band’s name I was trying to guess who it was (as I always do on here) and I swear I got whiplash when I did a double take when he called them a “2 hit wonder”. I suppose it’s all about perspective- as an Aussie, Crowded House and Split Enz, were always a staple of the 80’s charts. I’m glad I was in Australia if it meant I may have otherwise missed out on them.

It matters little to Australian and New Zealand Fans that America couldn’t recognise great Music when they hear it with that first, and every subsequent Album. Popularity in America is not the measure of Artistic success, and ‘Crowded House’ has achieved that over many Albums, they are Legends.

Message To My Girl is a hot summer day in Regional NSW in 1990 played by the boy I'm still with. It's such a beautiful song. For Crowded House, 4 Seasons in One Day is just as beautiful. I also remember Neil Finn did an accoustic version of Billie Jean on the Andrew Denton Breakfast Show that was just gorgeous. I could go on and on because Neil Finn is a genius!

I was very lucky to have had the chance to spend the day with Crowded House in 1988. I was stationed in Mainz, West Germany and Crowded House came to play at a local music hall. I was given a day's leave, so I went down to the music hall in the morning. I had only waited a few minutes before their truck pulled up. Their road crew manager allowed me to help them out. Neil, Nick, and Paul arrived about 1:00pm. I was awestruck and tongue-tied when I was around Neil. They were touring for their second album "Temple of Low Men" at the time, and I had memorized every note and lyric, so I believed at that time, (and I still hold this belief), that Neil was one of the greatest songwriters of all time. His guitar playing was fascinating and mesmerizing. I remember talking to Nick Seymour for hours about music, growing up in America versus growing up Down Under. I remember wrestling with Paul Hester, until their manager came running up and screamed at me not to hurt their drummer. I got to harmonize with Neil during their rehearsal before the show, and was aloud to see them backstage just before the show. Their roadcrew manager told me that if I could get myself down to Australia after my gig with U.S. Army was over, I could work with their crew full time. That never happened, but I often wonder what would have happened if I had taken him up on the offer!

I just found this CD in a resale shop and bought it again after many years. I used to cry myself to sleep after my divorce because everything was falling apart and now I’m remarried coming up on 16 years to a man who was madly in love with me since the 6th grade. He was too shy to ask me out but he walked me home and carried my books, he asked me to our 20 year reunion and we were both newly divorced going with him was the best decision I ever made. Now when I listen to this song I hear nothing but determination and love funny how things change. Thank you for such a beautiful song that can evoke such emotions.

Epic song from one of the greatest music artists of all time. Most people aren't even familiar with the ubelievable catalog between Crowded House now incuding his sons, Split Enz, Neil Finn solo albums, The Finn Brothers, and if you haven't seen or listened to 7 Worlds Collide you are really missing out. Let's also not forget a one time member of Fleetwood Mac and on stage for their last ever tour! Maybe a multi-part special featuring all of that history? I'm 55 and to me, Neil Finn is the John Lennon of our generation. Also thanks for showing his charity So They Can as we will be donating. Any project he would be a part of would be top notch, I know that. Thanks, Prof for highlighting this epic song and the beautiful artistry behind it. The Finn Brothers are from Te Awamutu in NZ. The band was Australian based but the creative genius behind them is all Kiwi! Split Enz were very experimental and its definitely worth hunting out some of their videos. Noel Crombie amazing playing the spoons. Crowded House have long been a favourite of mine. We are very proud of them here

I was a big fan of Split Enz in the early 80s and liked Crowded House in the late 80s. As an American, I hadn't realized Crowded House was connected to the Split Enz. Neil is so modest and genuine. Thank you for letting us hear about his songwriting. I agree with him that his voice is actually richer now than as a youngster.

Listening to music as a kid in Australia in the late 70's and 80's was such a great time, we would not only get the "good stuff" from the States, Canada and the UK, but we would get a lot of great music from home and the Kiwi's that the rest of world seemed to miss out on. Split Enz was one of those amazing Kiwi bands that should have dominated the world in the early and mid 80's yet it never came together for them, but from the ashes of one great band came another, and they were able to achieve some international success with an amazing song and album. 'Don't Dream It's Over' is a masterpiece, one of the very best songs from a great decade of music and it's great to hear that it's loved and appreciated nearly 40 years later. Congrats Neil.

Neil Finn is one of the greatest and most humble songsmiths of our time. I was a childhood fan of Split Enz and was saddened by that band's break-up. While a very different type of outfit, Crowded House quickly became another favourite of mine. Sadly, I'm yet to see them play live. I wish I'd gone to their Festival Hall concert in 1988... Much, much sadder was the tragic loss of drummer Paul Hester. I'm still yet to see Crowded House play live, although their farewell concert from Sydney Opera House was great on the telly! To see Neil reform the band with original bassist Nick Seymour, the original keyboard/organ player from the debut album recording, their brilliant producer and collaborator Mitchell Froom as well as Neil's two sons Liam and Elroy is such a beautiful thing. So many superb songs. One day, I will see them live. x
