I dislike musicals but Chazelle has proven he understands music. He uses music, it's not a veneer or a gimmick, its essential to the drive of the film, thematically and rhythmically, so, I look forward to watching it, regardless of my thoughts on the genre.

Guy Simchony They are definitely some of the greatest first films by any director in history. Directorial debuts like Citizen Kane and The Maltese Falcon take the cake though.

+Guy Simchony Hate to break it to you, but his first film was actually Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench. I haven't seen it, but it doesn't sound very good. If Whiplash and La La Land were his first 2 films, I'd agree that that's easily the best first 2 films of a director. Even better than Tarantino's first 2 films.

I remember seeing his last DP/30 right before Whiplash came out and I was amazed by how articulate and passionate he is. He proves to be able to incorporate music into cinema so seamlessly. I reckon we'll see some more movies that'll eventually become classics from this man.

@PanGrotto

It is creatively well executed but I wouldn't call it an instant classic, it's more of a homage to the comedy musical classics. Whiplash on the other hand, will probably end up become a classic. The writing for that film was off the charts.

@path2source

Shan Tariq Scorsese or Spielberg never "misuses" a oner. Scorsese composes the scene, making the music sync with the camera movement perfectly. Spielberg always allows the blocking to motivate the camera movement. La La Land is nothing short of a steadicam fetish where a lot of the camera movement feels forced and not in a good way. The camera movement and cuts in this film are very much like the ones in Paul Thomas Anderson's Boogie Nights in that they're screaming "look at what I got up my sleeves!" except PTA has the talent to pull it off. The choice of camera and lenses is also questionable for some of the scenes. Chazelle seems to be an example of a good artist who yearns to steal but can only borrow from the greats.

DP/30: The Oral History Of Hollywood I'm pretty sure he's referencing the Red Letter Media joke during their "Boyhood" review. They talked about how incredibly flawed they found the film, but joked that essentially it was amazing because, well...it took 12 years to make.
