I was gonna point this out too - the first two (even maybe 3 and part of 4) years/books/movie have a very different tone. It’s lighter, the main characters are kids, were entranced by the magic. Then as the war starts, the colors become darker and moodier which completely track the tone and stress of the characters.

half blood prince's color editing is terrible though, they gave it a weird greenish brown sepia filter that makes everything, including hogwarts, the most magical place ever, look pale, flat, and boring. All the movies before and after that look better too so it's really weird that it just suddenly did that then went back to looking normal it doesnt even make sense narratively.

And you'll notice the color is brighter when they go into the Muggle world, and people just go about their lovely days unbothered by the war that's happening in the wizard world. It's absolutely intentional.

This is very similar to why I really like Gwen’s dimension in Across the Spiderverse, because they openly and unashamedly use so many colors that accurately convey the emotions of the scene even just visually alone. Pink is a color of feeling love, and when Gwen rushes in to hug her dad, the watercolor style spreads pink. When she’s found and her dad is assuming she as Spider-Gwen is the one who killed Peter, a deep red and black convey harsh, dark, sticky emotions. Every color adds to the emotional value of the scene, and will even change from shot to shot. I love it so much

The first part is also how the movie “Megamind” shows the convertment of Roxxanes trust for the villain who slowly becomes a hero. At the very beginning, Roxxane is wearing a Scarlett Red dress, the in the middle her dress becomes purple. At the end of the movie though, it becomes blue, the colour of the ‘Villain’ who becomes a hero towards the end of the movie. I think this is such a neat detail, it really shows how peoples trust can change just by a period of time😊

I have thought about the color of la la land so much along the years as I believe there is something there to untangle to make sense on a story that often seems hard to grasp because of all its nuances and complexities and I must say your analisys is the closest I have ever found to mine. I think it is also very interesting how the colours are used from the beginning as a sort of foreshadowing : Seb is living in brown and more old-fashioned colours while Mia dreams in very vibrant hues and modern clothing. Even if during the middle of the movie they sort of join in the middle with Mia wearing warmer and lighter colours and Seb becoming more modern, they still feel out of place. So from the beginning they were foreshadowed as separate, on different part of the colour spectrum and it works very well at the end, with Seb being back in his brown suit and Mia's face on a very big movie billboard with all the bright colours she was wearing in the beginning of the movie!

This was such a great analysis. I knew colors had their own meaning in this film, but going from vibrant to muted and then back to vibrant by the end was so clever. Also using secondary colors such as purple to represent the combination for both main characters (blue and red) blows my mind. People usually associate red or pink with love but purple is perfect for them because it’s their real combination. I also noticed that she was wearing that yellow dress when the sky was purple. Yellow is opposite to purple

Siiirrr the Whiiiitte!!! It was my favorite part of the story telling. It makes very rare appearances, but it always appears when Mia is following her heart. It appears when they go on their walk to get to know each other, when she ditches her dinner date (the snow), during her one woman show, returning to her job as a successful actress, and twice in her dream montage when they fly to Paris/ have a kid. It was the very first color I noticed had symbolism in the movie!!

Great analysis. I think the average viewer missed all this. It is criminal that this film didn't win Best Picture. There is a lot going on with every scene -- every one is literally moving art (freeze any scene and just look at it). So, amazing cinematography, old-school storytelling with an ending that isn't necessarily storybook, ridiculously great acting (rewatch Mia's First Audition), fabulous costuming, a great score, and amazingly tight and well-choreographed dance scenes. It covers themes of love, and finding dreams in real world often difficult to navigate. And it showcases a the often-hidden beauty of a city with notable warts. This can arguably be considered a perfect film.

I just now realized why La la land had such a big impact on me. When I watched this movie, I was really lost and I was unsure of my future, I related to the movie a lot. I just now realized that without the vibrant and playful colors they used I wouldn't have had the same feeling as I did. This! As a photosensitive person I have to keep the brightness even lower than normal to avoid seizures and I’m nightblind as well so I need audio descriptions to see what the hell is happening in dark scenes. Otherwise I’m colorblind but I wish I could experience film live color-sighted people do
