I love when Ethan talks about Linklater saying: "I've never been in a helicopter crash, I've never been involved in espionage... but the most interesting thing that ever happened to me, really, was that feeling when I really truly connected with another human being... The long argument scene in Before Midnight is so honest, but it also reveals the humor of how couples who are together for a long time tend to fight. Before Sunrise is my all time favorite romantic movie.. and when she sings him the song in Before Sunset my heart melted. Love all three movies and am thankful for the people who made these films.!

I watched sunrise and sunset. OMG..first time. I wasn't sure I was on this planet. To find the greatest dialogue between two eartly souls when in today's world its waay too superficial was the greatest time spent on movies. They might have just physically spent twenty four hours together but a lifetime afterwards in the 9yrs away. Everything and everyone was measured by that standard and to bring this intelligent conversation to match their hearts depth again and again. Please can this be required viewed as 12th grade course. Thank you Ethan and Julie. You pulled off such a talented guide to humane interaction. Thank you. Btw I must have lived my sweetheart at age 17.we just did not realize it then. For jack RIP..

Yeah...I think you're right on that... and this is a guy who's steeped in 'sci-fi' action movie triliogies. As far as film narratives go, THIS is how you do it. Not a false note in the package and it does what continuing narratives are SUPPOSED to do and that's build upon what was presented before and expand, expound and illuminate it. And YES, I'd like to see a further chapter, but not before Hawke and Delpy are past 65 and the two and Linklater have come up with a script they all agree with.

I think what I really love about these movie trilogies is that the two lead characters always seem so real with each other and to us as the audience. They seem to be engaging in real, spontaneous conversation, and talking about whatever comes into their minds, and the conversation has a flow in itself and so natural. There are little mannerisms and small, insignificant actions involved when they interact with each other that make every scene seems so real. You don't for one moment aware that you are watching a film but feel like you are just watching two people connecting to each other in real time in real life.

When Ethan jokes about Before Sunrise making like 2 million so no one would want a sequel but they did I almost jumped out of my skin. This is literally my favourite movie and years later stumbling across Before Sunset felt like if I died the next day my life was complete. At that moment it was like a second chance at love, at life. Who would have known a movie/characters could live inside you that long.Always believed the whole concept was brilliant.

It definitely is Unique as Ethan says at the end. Loved all 3 movies and I could tell that the actors put a lot of themselves into their roles. The characters are close to their hearts and 'the stars aligned right to make it all happen'. Great and inspiring work by this awesome team. I have watched the movies several times and it just feels So real. Watching them age and talking about how their life has gone on....the ending of before midnight leaves you with a bittersweet feeling.....a hollow sensation in the gut like your worst fears have come true. Different stories touch different people. When you're moved & absorbed by a story, that's truly a remarkable thing. Certainly with the Before series. They are all about the search for connection and meaning in the lives we live. If Before Midnight hit close to home that ultimately means that other people have gone through the same thing & you are not alone. It's the beauty of storytelling and what it gives to us. Connection. Meaning. Long may stories like that continue to enrich our lives.

At 10:25 he's talking about how "we" (as human beings i suppose) don't want somebody perfect to be our partner, and how the three of them tried to convey that in the script. His voice cracks and then he looks away pensively. Can't help but think (maybe I'm projecting) that the moment he says that his mind goes to his marriage with Uma Thurman or something from his past. Either way, one of the most earnest moments i've seen from an actor in an interview. Big fan.

I also feel a connection having been born around the same time in the same city (Austin) as him, and also having actually seen Richard Linklater filming a scene of Dazed and Confused, in the neighborhood near where I grew up, before I was old enough to know what I saw or who he was. I'm also a fanatic about the Before series - the dialogue is captivating in these movies; the characters so enthralling to continuously want to know more. So very well written, acted, filmed and put together. Big fan of the movie, Hawke, Delpy and of course Linklater.

Romantic/romantic comedy is my least favourite movie genre, but I have to be honest and say the before trilogy is magnificent cinema art at its most beautiful complexion. It's a movie were I feel fortunate and grateful there are such superb nuanced director out there such as Linklater and such brave, creative, vulnerable actors such as Hawke and Delpy in the industry. The trilogy is a shining example of what can be achieved when you have great talent collaborate for an altruistic goal such as make a movie and not have making profits as the motivating factor but rather have the main driving force be creating timeless art. Congratulations on achieving that milestone.

Fab interview! Personally, Midnight is my favourite of all three trilogies (Sunrise my least). Midnight is the most real. The writing, the story and the actors age gracefully. Richard Linklater sounds like an absolute dream to work with. I hope there's another in the Before series. I fantasise about titles, haha. Before Dawn. Before Noon. Before whatever. Tis very rare for something to get better as the stakes rise. I trust this killer trio can deliver. Especially after 2020. We need another artwork about human connection and life in general

It's interesting that Ethan wanted to make the 3rd because the ending of the 2nd felt unfinished. I personally feel the opposite - that the ending of #2 would've perfectly concluded the series and the ending of #3 kind of begs for a #4

Just the 2... though this one is extra long.

Third entry is better than Sunrise and on par with Sunset. They couldn't dread such romantic territory again. It was the logical outcome and it was spectacular.

"Playback kind of creates this constant dissatisfaction with the mediocrity of life".... Damn, that really hits in 2021

"Acting together is about creating a safe place for people to be foolish and people to be vulnerable and for people to be strong and people to be confident..." When he says this (near the end here), I think of what Julie admits to in another interview, how she'd make fun of Ethan during kissing scenes, turning to the crew and saying "oh, he kisses like an adolescent!". Of course the whole crew laughed, but it's not actually funny or a good way to work with anyone. In another interview Richard says that on the average day of shooting, Julie would turn up and say "I don't think we can shoot today - my best friend died", before dramatically disappearing (presumably into her trailer) for a while. He says "her best friend died every day of the movie", but she'd always, eventually, emerge back out on the set ready for the day's shoot. Such an amazing actress but just wow, imagine trying to work with a person like that.
