Great shots Duane. Love that perch you found, shows off the birds perfectly. I’m using the R5 with the 100-500 lens and find it a great walk about combination . I was initially concerned at the relatively slow f7.1 maximum aperture on the 100-500 but concluded that that’s pretty much where I’d want to be for DOF anyway. So it was interesting to see you using similar apertures for DOF whilst still getting nice smooth backgrounds. Like you I’ve been really impressed with how well the new sensor handles high ISO noise, especially given the 45MP. It seems that gone are the days when you had to choose between high MP but poor low light performance or good low light performance but lower MP. The same goes for the frame rate. Overall a really nicely rounded camera.

Really enjoy your videos Duade. I like that you don’t talk down to people. Have the R5/100-500 arriving tomorrow. Have been shooting with the OM-1/150-400 for a little over a year and have been missing the flexibility of FF files at times. Also, I’ve always found the initial capture, then stickiness of the OM to be a bit lacking vs A1, etc. Another primary reason is I’m looking for something that packs even smaller than the OM-1/150-400 which, as you know, is the same size as the A1/200-600 and new Nikon Z8/180-600 for that matter. Thanks for all the hard work producing these videos.

Hi DUADE Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the R6 low light shooting . I specialize in flash photography with Birds and wildlife in a forest environment because of poor lighting conditions . But the R6 will change the game for me might be able to give the flash a way ?. most people don't understand when I say I use a flash for photographing in a forest, there environments is dryer and open like yours so it doesn't make any sense to them . I have another twelve months of saving before I have enough $ to buy one can't wait for that day.

Derek, I understand exactly where you are coming from, it was pretty dark but I suspect a true rainforest would be a lot darker, however being able to shoot at 12800 gives you more flexibility that is for sure. Hey Duade. I am very happy to see that some more time behind the camera has seen you overcome your initial difficulties. It seems like you've adjusted your approach to get things right for you and your results are very nice indeed - congratulations. I would be interested to know now that you have played with high ISO on these cameras if you agree with my previous comment (different video) that the R5/6 while not leaps and bounds ahead of the 5D4 in terms of visible noise do clean up much easier and leave much more detail.

Some very good low light shots there, Duade. As a Nikon user, have just stepped up to the D6 from the D5. Using the 600mm f4 mainly for cricket in the summer, I find that using auto ISO I can set the D6 at 1/4000 and 6.5 to get a little more depth of field. Quite happy with the results so far. New Holland honeyeaters are always a good subject to experiment with in the backyard, this time of year. The 500mm PF on the Z7 is an interesting combination as well.

The R5 and R6 are fantastic cameras for wildlife and photography in general. The R5S and the R7 is pretty much confirmed for this year release according to Canon rumors which would even be a better due to the megapixel (R5S Full Frame 90MP, R7 APS-C 32 Megapixel), but you might lose some of the low light capabilities of the R5 and the R6, but anyways there are always some trade off for something better also the RF telephoto primes are coming as well which include the equivalent of your 500F4 as well as the insane 1200mm F8. This is a great time to be a wildlife photographer since photographing in the wild has little effect from COVID 19.

Excellent video as usual. As strictly a hobbyist photographer I can't rationalize the expense of going mirrorless. To invest that kind of money I would upgrade my glass before the camera body. The speed at which these companies are advancing the bodies reminds me of when computer companies did the same thing. Six months after buying a top of the line computer it was replaced with a new and better model. With Canon and Nikon in a model race I can see this happening for awhile yet before it levels off. I may upgrade from my canon 70D at some point but no time soon. Please keep up your great videos. Its likely the only way I'll ever get to visit Australia.

Diederick, I had all the focus points when using a 2x. I also had AF when using a 2x on my 400 5.6. Just be aware you will get a much reduced FPS using a version 1 lens and focus preset won't work. I think the FPS will be around 6.8 mechanical shutter. Cheers, Duade

@@Duade Thank you Duade ! The question I have, is the R6 in combination with the EF500mm F4 an good alternitave for my 1DX ? Main subjects I shoot is, birding and motorsports. Will it work with fast sports?
@Duade4 жыл бұрын
@@diederickgalestien5918 Diederick, it's tough to know, you will have less FPS at 6.8 and the body is a lot smaller so will feel a lot different to a 1dx. You can get a battery grip to make it feel better in the hand. It doesn't have the same tough feel and construction of the bigger body either. But the autofocus and quality of the files should be as good or better than the 1dx. The blackout/stuttering/lag in the viewfinder can be a negative with very fast sport such as cars moving. I would highly suggest renting or borrowing an r5/r6 before purchasing one so you can see if it suits your style. Cheers, Duade

Thanks for your comment and feedback, I think the lenses you have are very good and I would be waiting to see what the next RF telephoto lenses will be. The R5 is an excellent camera however if you don't need those megapixels I would be very curious to see what the R7 offers. If the R7 can shoot at ISO6400 then that 1.6 crop on a 32mp sensor will be a fantastic option for birds. Thanks for info on Outtakes, I left them out and had people asking for them so I can't win :-) Cheers, Duade

I recently got the R6 I don't own a version of lightroom. Which one do you recommend for processing the CR3 files. Love your videos thanks
@Duade4 жыл бұрын
Kenneth, I use CC as I also use Photoshop. I believe DPP can process the Raw files also which might be worth a try. Cheers, Duade

Thanks again Duade I'm sure there have been others that have found there software would not work with CR3 files keep up the good work!

Thanks for all your videos. But this one was just what I needed. Excellent video. When taking BIF what af method do you recommend? Animal eye AF tracking or one of the others? Thanks again.
@Duade4 жыл бұрын
Ian, I will be honest that I struggle with BIF myself. Generally, I try to get the camera to focus at a distance that I predict the photo will be so I focus on a far tree, the ground etc, I then try and track the bird until I can see it in the viewfinder. I will activate the Eye AF and try and wait for the small blue focus box to find the head and eye. Once the bird is close enough I hit the shutter. This can be very difficult with busy backgrounds and fast moving birds. Good luck. Cheers, Duade

Good stuff. Thanks for sharing this. I agree with you on the favorite goose shot. You had issues before on the AF locking on background. You did not mention this this time. How did you resolve that challange?
@Duade4 жыл бұрын
G'day, I didn't have the same issues as the perch was quite big in the forest which meant the camera could see it. And the Geese were very big Soni didn't have an issue there either. It appears the AF issue is mainly small birds on thin perches. Cheers, Duade 👍

Canon R5 is. Very well rounded product me up there with IQ and AF and ahead of competition in some areas especially usability and functionality.It for bad press just because while you tube is filled with youtubographers who are expert at shooting cats,dogs and brick walls and testing cameras on computers via software.in real life it’s a different story all together

G'day Bhupinder, the R5 is the biggest jump In have seen in a long time for bird photography. I can only image how good the future versions will be. Cheers, Duade 👍

Hi Duade l live in the UK and we have lots of days with poor light my lens is the sigma 150-600 c if l get the Canon R5 Will this combination be ok for the poor light that we get
@Duade3 жыл бұрын
Keith, the R5 will likely be an improvement over your current camera at higher ISO's, however there does appear to be some AF issues between the 150-600C and the R5, I did a review here which might help. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZpPUepqmjZ5_rM0 Ultimately any lens/camera combination will struggle in low light but the R5 is a camera that will perform well. Cheers, Duade

I have had my R5 a few months and it has been all but flawless. It is a do-all camera. I thought it was a bit pricey until Sony announced the price of the new A1. Now, the R5 seems to be a relative bargain!

, yes, it does look compared to the Sony for sure. Glad to hear you are enjoying the camera. Cheers, Duade

I'm torn between R7 or R5 for wildlife photography... with the RF100-500 lens...

Hi Duade, thanks for the great content.. have you tested the r6 with the 100-400 USM L ii lens with a 1.4x teleconverter.. have been planning to get one but im afraid 400 on a full frame just wont be enough for birding.. thanks again
@Duade4 жыл бұрын
G'day Ravi, I have used my 400 5.6 which would be similar and it worked well with the 1.4. you will need to use an aperture of f10 or 11 for the sharpest shots which requires good light. It might be worth seeing if there are any more rumours about the R7 which sounds like will be an APSC mirrorless from Canon. Cheers, Duade 👍

OFF TOPIC QUESTION:Any advice on choosing a tripod?
@Duade4 жыл бұрын
The only thing I can suggest is make sure it is tall enough for you to stand without having to bend over. Carbon fibre will save weight. Nice and sturdy. I use a Benro which is cheaper then the Gitzo and havent had any issues. Cheers, Duade

Hi Duade, interesting and informative content as always, thanks. I'm curious as to whether you have a sweet spot in regards to the distance from you to your subject in a set up like this or the ones you have shown from your property? I realize there are lots of variables but let's say you are using your full frame and 500mm f4 with a 1.4x teleconverter at f7.1 to f9. I suppose visibility is a factor as well so assuming you have a throw over of pop up hide.
@Duade3 жыл бұрын
G'day Michael, I estimate around 7-10 metres gives me the best IQ at 700mm. It can depend on species of course as some birds are a lot bigger than others. Cheers, Duade 👍

I was a little surprised when you had previously said you felt there was little difference in noise performance between the R6 and 5D IV. I don't have the 5D IV but do have the 6D which is similar in noise and the R6 is much better. Interestingly the 6D and R6 both have 20 megapixel sensors but you wouldn't think so as the R6 produces a more detailed image. Don't know if you have tried Gigapixel AI for times you want to crop that little bit more. It does a surprisingly good job. Not as good as a 45 megapixel sensor but still much better than a straight crop. Not many talk about the pros the R6 has over the R5 - better battery life, buffer size, taking up less space card and disk and no issues in resolving detail on older lenes.
@Duade4 жыл бұрын
Frank, yes, I was a little harsh in my original review I think as it performed very well. I will try Gigapixel in a future video to see how they compare. Thanks for your pros re the R6, some good points. Cheers, Duade

Great video, really looking forward to the comparison between the R5 and R6. Like probably many photographers, I'm planning to upgrade but I'm not sure which to go for. I'm leaning towards the R6 due to price difference, of course everybody wants the latest and best ... but does the R5 deliver that much extra performance to justify the spend, especially to the ordinary Joe Soap (on a budget) photographer ...
@Duade4 жыл бұрын
G'day, it is a really tough decision as the R5 sensor is a lot more flexible however they both operate almost identically. So it comes down to if 20mp is enough for you. Cheers, Duade 👍

Thanks for the comparison Duane. Interesting to see the quality of the R6 is no slouch, and the higher ISO results appear to be better. Overall, would you rather the R5 or R6?
@Duade4 жыл бұрын
G'day Phil, if money was no object then the R5 is the clear winner but if on a budget the R6 performs very well. Cheers, Duade 👍

Damn, 12800 ISO is ridiculous. I try not not shoot higher than 3200 at most with my 80D and if I go that far the images definitely look noisier than the eastern yellow robin one. Very nice video!
@Duade4 жыл бұрын
G'day Fernando, APSC sensors like your 80D will show more noise than a FF and is one of the big advantage s of FF. I had a 7D for a long time and I didn't like going over ISO 800. Times sure have changed. Cheers, Duade 👍

A really good video Duade. I guess you will be buying your 'other half' a nice necklace or similar, then producing an R5 out of the same shopping bag ! I would dearly love to buy one but twelve months ago invested in a 1DX Mk3, which has hardly been used due to lockdowns etc.

Canon have always had nice lenses, just their cameras have been lacking compared to Nikon/Sony. I am happy to say the R5/6 has closed that gap and these cameras are very good. Cheers, Duade
