Yes yes yes. Personally I have gone from “taking photos of birds” to “taking photos that have birds in them.” For me, it’s an essential difference, and I am having a glorious time. Thank you, Duade, for another inspiring video. I think most of us start out with portraits. In part, because the subjects are so beautiful and we often don’t have the chance to get that close or to see the bird for more than a fleeting glance. A photograph with a long focal length lens gives us that opportunity to better appreciate the details and beauty. But you said something key about your lovely Royal Albatross shot - “It just oozes story.” Story is that added dimension that beautiful portraits don’t often capture. Story helps elicit emotion beyond admiration of the beautiful birds. One minor correction about my White-Tailed Kite shot. This is a mating pair. The female is on the nest for much of the time, so the male will hunt for both of them. Instead of bringing the food to the nest, they will often transfer the food in mid-air. They weren’t fighting over the vole - it was his gift.

Thank You Duade for including one of my images in your video. I agree a zoom and some imagination add a whole new dimension to our bird photography. You get lots of credit for inspiring me to get out of a warm bed well before sunrise and at temps that are considered dangerous to see what I can find. Sea smoke, as we call it in Maine is always interesting but it means going out before sunrise in temps well, well below 0 which adds a challenging aspect. On that morning I couldn't take my heavy gloves off for more than a few seconds

One of my favorites videos ever, Duade. I never have a big prime lens, and despite I have some portraits that I loved, my favorite type of photo are the ones that have behavior, habitat or any other element that tell a history. I always look to the winning photos of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year and it's awesome how creative this guys are. All stiles are nice, but creative shots can be done don't matter how expensive is your gear. By the way, your members are fantastic photographers and I really enjoy see this beautiful collection of images.

Yes, yes and yes! I love this topic. I’ve been shooting for 3 years now. I’m having the same experience. Started with just capturing the bird, to isolating the portrait. To environment and behavior. Duade, your goals and taking a unique view to overlook the rules but rely on your instincts for creativity is impressive. I have yet to become a wild life photographer, let alone be a bird photographer. As a documentary photographer, I did not realize I had some preconceived rules; other than getting the shot. Now I know that I need to put time into compositions and then being creative.

I have followed you since I started photography 2.5 years ago. I have seen the shift in your photography, I took your advice back when I started so I was all about water setups. But I naturally leaned towards handheld walk around photography, just loved the experience of hiking 10kms with the camera. Wasn't until your Fuscous Honeyeater video I actually started thinking about zooming my lens out. I'm still just after front lighting because focusing on bush birds I love capturing the details. I'm yet to go out and photograph salt water birds.

Yepp Duade, that are real words. most of the time we are to much focused at the subject than the complete scene or composition. break your thinking, concentration to the subject and let the inspiration flow for the "total" composition. learn from other genres of photography. switch your thinking to an art view of photography and develop this. for sure at the starting point the subject rules and later on your creativity should rule.

Great video Duade. I feel that if everyone is shooting the same thing as everyone else then no one is thinking creatively and thinking out of the box. It’s better to experiment and get different images even if it might not be what everyone else is doing. Not every picture has to be a prize winning photograph. For me it’s about having fun and waiting for something interesting to happen. 😊

I agree with you on zoom lenses stimulating creativity. Previously, I shot birds and wildlife with my D850+500mm pf combo. Great kit but when I picked up the OM1+150-400mm 4.5 TC, my bird photography immediately jumped to another level. Partly it’s the amazing AF, frame rates and pro-capture features of this camera. But also the lens, the ability to go from 300mm ffe to 1000mm. I feel I can go out and catch everything from closeups to environmental shots - and adapt my shooting and subjects to changing conditions. Sometimes it feels like cheating - so I dust off my Nikon kit, go out and work a little bit harder.

Whilst over the years I have tried to shake off my two constant photographic companions, incompetence and mistake, I have recently come to value their input to my photographic journey. Funnily enough, when I'm editing the photos my eye often goes to the "mistake" photos, like over / underexposure, too slow a shutter speed, shooting back lit, shooting towards a setting sun, bird flies behind a bush etc ... then I try and remember to incorporate my mistakes into my normal photographic repertoire! My main lessons from around 50 years of making photos, is to try everything (film made that more prohibitive) and to always look behind you, because more often than not, that's where the best photo lies.

Duade thanks for making this video. My style of photography is much like the type you mention here, not because I’m anything special but more because of the environments I typically shoot in. This means my images are rarely staged, I’m rarely able to pre plan a wildlife image, and there are often “real world” things in the frame. I was getting really down on myself because all I was seeing was these (admittedly beautiful) perfect bird on a stick images with 100% creamy backgrounds, a single perch, and nothing else in the frame. I have nothing against those, and even aspire to take them, but I was getting to a point where I thought anything “less” wasn’t ok.

As beginners we generally dont encourage the idea of thinking out of the box rather we try to get the best we can from the moment and so we tend to rely mostly on portrait styled shots basically we play "safe". However my next day in the field will surely be a surprise to me because i will make sure to break every rule i have learned till today. Hopefully it will be a day full of new lessons and insights and maybe i could get lucky with some shots.Through your videos you have helped us realise the true potential of everything be it the enviroment , eqipument , situation you name it. Very nice photos from the viewer and you as well! One style of photography that I enjoy very much is showing the surroundings, the leaves, the ground (and is actually easier to shoot because you don't need to isolate the bird with a clean, far away background or have a very fast lens!)

I often ask myself what creativity is. I always shoot what I like. I also look at a lot of pictures and I also get a feeling what I like from that and what works well in terms of composition for me. I think in the end it really is a matter of experience of both: knowing what you like and knowing what can work. If I say to myself that I want to be creative today I think that would not work. But just going outside and being open for everything also with an eye on what something can become in post worked the best for me. And especially do some experimenting and variation. One of my most favorite techniques is to play bird songs in the field using he Merlin Bird ID app on my phone. Once the species is identified, I play several recordings from the app and 'call' the bird in question into what I hope is a decent shot. To date, this has worked on Carolina Wrens, Northern Cardinals, Tufted Titmouse, Brown Thrashers, Eastern Phoebes, Brown Crested Flycatchers, and most recently, a White-eye Vireo. I pursued him with the bird call trick for nearly forty five minutes before I got a decent shot of the very elusive and timid bird. Rarely does this ever end up producing a 'text book' perfect image and forget about any preset rules, but it is the most exciting way I have found to enjoy pursuing birds with a camera.

Thanks for sharing, using calls can be effective for sure, the tricky part to address is what is appropriate with calls and that is ultimately up to each photographer. I think the best way is to not use around nests or breeding birds or if we can see the bird is distressed. It is a very controversial topic in many countries including Australia, my view is people are going to use calls so I would just hope people use common sense and their own judgement in this regard. For decades I thought of myself as mainly a landscape photographer. Then Covid lock down came I started to focus and the sparrows and starlings in my garden. I love taking photos that other people like but my love of photography is not dependent on them liking the images. I could listen to you talk photography all day long, and such good photos throughout the video too. Thank you.

Thanks a lot for yet another fantastic videos. I have the feeling that part of what you call creative images is a very personal view. When I look at your birds on a stick, I always wish I could be as creative a you are in that specific style. From my personal point of view, your mastery in this specific style does lead to very creative images. Conversely, backlit medium- and large-sized birds is another style that I personally tend to find less exciting, perhaps because I've seen a bit too many of those images. That said, kudos for finding that heron rookery and for capturing that fantastic image.

Great food for thought. The ideas apply to other types of photography like street photography. Get out look for the unusual and record it. I didn't submit this time but then realized that my favorite photos fit the bill because they make me happy when I look at them.😅 I also realize that it's easy to fall back into taking ordinary photos.😢

Hi Kim, anytime I hit the shutter its a good photo for my mental health :-) I think the key is just being aware of the photo opportunity when it presents itself and trying things even if you don't think it will work. Enjoyed the video and seeing all the creative captures from you and other photographers. Info and photos were very inspiring. I love bird photography because the possibilities are endless. You can have 100 really great photos of a species, but the 101th could be better than the 100 or capture the bird doing something totally unique or in a unique pose or setting.

I have to admit to being a fan of both the portrait style photographs as well as the more creative storytelling style. I'm so new to wildlife photography that I'm afraid I'm not very good at either but I also have to admit I could not care less. I really enjoy being out and about in nature wether I capture any good images or not. It kinda makes my wife nuts. We went to Iceland last year and I spent 10 days battling the weather and the landscape and I came away with very few good images but I had the time of my life! We are going back this year and I hope to do the same again ... and if I get more keepers then that is great but it will still be a wonderful trip!

Great video; thanks for sharing your thinking! To help myself in this area I recently started keeping two Lightroom folders. One is my “best” ID shot for each species. The other is my “favorite” photo of each species. These favorites usually contain something interesting or unique - atmosphere, behavior, context, etc. In any case, it gives me more options when I go out to think about a new “best” in either category. Lots of fun.

Had a picture used by ABC NT used for their weather program. It was an egret sitting in a tree looking out towards the rising sun. The whole pic was a golden yellow apart from the bird which was white.

Good final words. Just enjoy being in nature. I always go out thinking I’m going to get photos of X but end up getting a great shot of Y. Then is isn’t till later I realize what I got was probably a once in a lifetime situation. I always leave with something great I wasn’t expecting.

Another tip regarding creative shots, and this is for people who take photos for a while now, is to go back to photos from the past. Our view and take on photography and also our style change overtime. I sometimes do this exercise and find very interesting shots that at the time didn't say much to me, but when I see them again, I see it differently. You mentioned doing it, but didn't put much emphasis on the process. Congrats on another great video, I'm regretting not sending you a couple images myself, but I will eventually do it. It is fantastic to see how you embrace what we could see coming for a while in your videos - Duade Mark III ! I think once you got comfortable with the technic in the initial years you indeed evolve to a strict framework applying rules but how great to see the results of your creative views. Excellent comparison and well done. I have the R7 combined with the 100-500mm lens and am exceedingly happy with it. Your progress through the styles is a natural progression if one wants to improve. Personally I started off as a macro photographer so quickly learnt that side lighting can add a tremendous amount of texture to your image . The subject well lit with light over the shoulder is a safe way to get a portrait but often they lose out on the contrast between shadows and highlights, which add something to your image immediately.

Haven’t been a subscriber for that long but this is the best video you’ve done IMHO, I’m in the natural photo group, I think the birds on a stick have there place but are boring to me and some border on the edge of being so processed they don’t look real. Give me the natural habitat every time, to me it’s more of a challenge. The photos were very inspiring. We’ll have to go, me and the dog are headed out back to get some shots of breeding purple martins skimming the water to get a drink. Keep the great videos coming will be looking for them.👀👀

Duade, an absolutely fantastic video, as always, plenty of astounding images, including members. I am about to to drive slowly through Spain, so Storks displaying around their nests, Vultures soaring in the mountains etc. Recently I have had problems with image quality, I took hundreds of images using my Sigma 120-300 f2.8, with my brand new R5, only to find the R5 firmware defocuses Sigma lenses. This time I have a 100-400Lii, I could not justify the RF lens. Unfortuneately I don't drink coffee, otherwise I would become a member! Having watched some excellent videos I may try some footage while away. Keep inspiring us, good work.

Another heap of great tips, ideas and beautiful shots! I must admit that I'm too lazy for sunrise wakeup, tripods, groundpods and hides. I just try to get whatever I can from my bushwalks or even city walks. And incidentally, I've recently taken many similar shots that you featured: a sequence of pied cormorants with one neck-deep in another's throat, with a dozen or so watching perched on a tree, a few perched and a few taking off pied butcherbirds and a shot of a noisy miners catching flies (with flies around it). I took the latter while testing the AF of Panasonic GF8 and a pretty slow AF lens-Panasonic 45-200mm (paid A$200 for both!)... so like you said times and times again, it's not the gear that takes beautiful pictures, but the human behind it!

I had been thinking this for myself, after so many years shooting its hard to take something different. To begin with its all about getting all the technical right, although thats very difficult, after a while, that really is the easy bit .Now, its a real challenge, to turn out something everyone else isnt doing on a daily basis. I have worked with wildlife all my life so look to behaviour mostly for my shots, however seeing your video I think I will go for more environmental images too. Great stuff as always Duade..keep up the great vids...Regards.

I really like environmental images of birds and other wildlife, especially if they capture some action or behavior. I don't have property to use as a setup (urban life is real). I do use calls in the field within limits to lure birds down from the forest canopy. But ultimately, I can only get so close; so to get a pleasing image, I make use of the environment like a landscape photographer, which I also am. Those images you showed at the beginning were stunning, especially the hummingbird.

You never fail to inspire me! Once again, the subject matter is so relevant. For me, and I suspect many others, there is an evolving journey. First, just capture any bird, then you streamline your photography to isolating the bird on a perch with lovely blurred background. Whilst I still like trying to achieve that, I’m now more interested in trying to creating more unique photos by looking for the story. Your very timely video just reinforces all these key points. Great topic and excellent video. Even the most common bird can be the subject of a great photo by capturing an unusual pose, unique lighting, or interesting behaviors. Composition doesn't have to follow rigid rules, and I've found the key can be to go ahead and try things without fear of failure. If the shot is rubbish, so what? Thanks again, Dude. Exactly what I've been thinking lately when looking at your photos: They're perfect, but also a bit boring in the long run. I find it tiring to look at the same style of portrait over and over again. It's good if you can get away from it. At least that is my opinion. Others may see it very differently.

Hi Duade, thanks for sharing these insights and those marvelous images including those from your members ! I would agree you'd need this kind of creative images to stand any chance of winning some competition. Yet I fear *only* chasing this type of images is a recipe for frustration. I guess It's best to hone your skills and know the "rules" well, before breaking them. But we should indeed never be narrowminded about the rules. Yesterday I woke up at 04:00 in order to be in a bird hide before sunrise, but we were awarded by rain 😞, and from the first half hour I've already deleted over 1000 images .. yet I do have a handful of keepers, include 1 shot at iso 40000. Sometimes you're awarded with a creative image when you shoot even in conditions which are no good "according to the book" ;-)
