I know others have said it but I want to say it too... the transition from RAW to the finished product is a super special feature of your channel, and your processing makes those images some of the more wonderful on YT. I think I enjoyed this as much as you did, Duade. Perfect.

Same here. Here in South Africa it's really expensive ZAR50K. But I currently have the R6 with Sigma EF 150-600 Contemporary. With eye detect, it has one shot in focus and loose further focus every shot there after. Very frustrating!! Can't wait for this to reach our shores!! I will spend the money when available here!!😂

I've had my 200-800 for just over a week now, and it's a stunner. Winter gloom in Northern England means that I've only been out 4 times, but that will change. I took it out with the R7 first, but I've also had it out with the R5. Yesterday I used both bodies on the same subject, a dipper against a dark mud bank in deep shadow. A dark subject in poor light, requiring ISOs from 4000 to 12800. The R7 found the eye even under those circumstances, It often lost focus after a few frames (Electonic First Curtain), but usually found it again, and the frames in focus were enough to be happy with. Very good results. The switch to the R5 showed the difference in class that 3 times the price brings. Less reach, but a lot more keepers and less dropped focus (although there were some). Quality of the finished results were fine with both bodies. I had the R7 out with it last week at a nearby harbour photographing gulls, eiders and seals. It worked well, with great reach, but I found I was pulling the zoom back to 400 to 500mm from the 800 for flight shots, because the birds were going past too fast and too close to track or even lock onto at 800mm. It found the seals well, even though only the face was showing above the water against the dark reflections of the quay on the other side of the dock and the multitude of ripples. Once more occasional dropped focus. Going back next day, with the lens on my R5 was fun. No need to pull back the zoom because the shortened reach on the full frame body let me track the passing gulls, ducks and cormorants with ease, even at close range. An Emirates Boeing 777 coming in towards the approach at the airport was crisp. My app showed it was at 4,000 feet altitude and 3 km range. The tail registration code was clear. That session encouraged me to start using my R5 for wildlife again. Since I got the R7, the extra reach was too big a draw on me. The lens is a winner for me.

I’m thinking of moving from my R7 to the R5. I’ve lost so many good photos cause of losing focus. I moved from the 150-600 to the 100-400ii which made a huge difference but still having troubles.

Thanks for the awe-inspiring video Duade... reach is like a drug to me... I can't seem to get enough of 1120- 1280mm FOV. This is my practical limit. On closer shots, the details on smaller birds are simply amazing! I am glad you mentioned how much birding gives you restoration after a stressful week - it's such a benefit to your mental health.
@Duade9 ай бұрын
Totally agree mate and glad you are enjoying the combo, heat haze does seem to be more of an issue with this combo but still getting lots of nice shots. My R7 AF is still playing up but if I shoot enough bursts I get keepers. Cheers, Duade
@ww36889 ай бұрын
@Duade I've accepted the R7's limitations and continue to get great results with this combo. For my love of small skittish birds, 800mm FOV just doesn't seem long enough any more.

Hello Duade! I had to stop and tell you what a joy it has been to watch your channel! I am a 68 year old new photographer who bought a P1000 Nikon not too long ago and then quickly realized the P1000 wasn’t what I really want to be using. It’s fun and novel, but I believe I just needed more in regards to resolution, detail and expression. The P1000 is fun to zoom around with, but that was about all it did. After investigating more and more, and then coming across your wonderful channel, last night I bit the bullet and made the decision to buy a Cannon R6 Mark 2 with a RF 200-800 f/6.3-9 Cannon lens. I’m hoping that the new camera and lens will take me further in my learning as I gain more experience. The camera and lens hasn’t arrived yet, so in the mean time I’m devouring your videos. Again, you have no idea how much you have helped me in not only understanding more about photography, but just as importantly, the excitement that is welling up within me as I anticipate what could be down the road for me as I learn. I was shooting birds in my back yard yesterday for the second time ever with the P1000 on my makeshift bird feeder and I couldn’t believe how absolutely enjoyable it was! I figured I’d do some novice experimenting, and upped the shutter speed hoping to stop the raindrops in midair as the birds fed on seeds - and it worked! I consider myself a tough guy, having shot big firearms and ridden fast motorcycles my whole life, but Duade, I wasn’t ready for almost my weeping when I saw an image come up on screen of something I just composed on a camera. Duade, I have to let you know that you have made a massive impact on my wanting to pursue something I never saw coming. Your work is so very much appreciated and you are being used to help guys like me literally have a change of lifestyle and affections. All the very best to you. Joe

I just received my lens after waiting almost a year for it to be in stock in stores here in the US. Took it out yesterday afternoon for a test run at a park down near the San Jacinto River here in the Houston, TX area. Got some excellent shots of a great egret and a mixed group of ducks who probably arrived with the last cold front. I was using my R6 MkII and a monopod, it was quite windy but I got some really nice shots. The lens is tack sharp and focuses quickly. So far very pleased. I will now probably sell my RF 800mm f/11 and my Tamron 150-600mm.

I needed retail therapy. I took your advice, so I now have one. Now, you may recall I have been a professional photographer for 50 years, so the iso at f9 didn't worry me. However, what does let this lens down, at least in the UK, is that f9 is dark, and even with the R5, the lens is prone to hunting. Only used it once so far, but the results look pretty good.

It is fun to see how happy you are out there photographing wildlife. I have had this lens since December 14th. I am very glad I was lucky and was the first person to put in an order at the local camera store. As of 2 weekends ago they had only been able to deliver 3 of these lenses. I have to fight off other Canon users when I am out shooting. Picking a best or favorite image is tough. The combination of the R7 and RF 200-800 is very good. I have used it on my R7 and my R5. While the R5 is clearly the better body, the R7 with this lens works very good and the extra reach is worth it. I need to do some comparison shoots comparing the R7 and RF 200-800, R5 and RF 200-800 but crop to the R7 FOV, and R5 + 1.4x and the RF200-800, to see which is sharper and gives you the most detail.

Hello Duade. Thank you for your videos! They are very helpful for me. Witch lens 100-500 or 200-800 would do you recommend if you would have only r6 mark ii with ef 100-400? I'm a new to wildlive photography. We have (in Switzerland) most best places on lakes either private or protected areas. 800m would be great but so havy to care in the mountains for me. My oldy ef 100-400 with extenders does not work very well. Often goes out. Freezes and autofocus is not correct. It is very frustrating with that combo. Then one more please, would you make videos with a your pc workflow? I'm wondering, how do you decide which foto will you keep from hundreds? How do you work with photoshop maby. Do you have a masterclass? Only tech videos are good but not enough for newby. Thank ouy very much for your help in advance. Greeting from Switzerland

I've been shooting Eagles for the last 2 weeks with this lens. Local lakes are thawing and the Eagles like to sit on the ice. Overcast days and cooler temps in the 40-50F. I am probably maxing the capabilities of this lens as I'm shooting 1000-1500 feet to reach some of the Eagles. Not filling the frame. Most my good shots are of them in the trees nearby as the heat haze is pretty bad coming off the lake. On my most recent trip the sun was out and the haze was worse to 20' above the surface of the lake, that day I shot with the R7 and the R6MII. Had BIF opportunities with both cameras and had the 1.4x on the lens for both bodies. The shots with the R7 were unusable and ended up deleting them off the card. Tracking of the Eagles in flight was tough for the AF @ f13 @ 800mm with the R7 where the R6MII performed much better in locking on vs hunting with the R7. This all being said, the R7 performed very well when shooting bif with much closer subjects and better lighting where you can fill the frame more with the subject. The AF though at times you could see it lock on focus then defocus and I would have to refocus on subjects, a little annoying. Not experiencing that with the R6MII, needless to say I am finding it hard if it's an important outing to use my R7 when I have a better option. The lens is amazing for how it performs and the extra range is excellent. For the money I think it is a great combo if one can afford the 3500.00 (US price). Another great video, can't wait to see your review of the of the lens. It performs well with the 1.4x I might also add.

Thanks for another excellent video, Duade! Very nice images & scenery in this one. Great as well, seeing you making time for those things that matter most in life!! If we cannot do that, how much is any of it really worth? That combo does seem like it would be nice for many different applications or scenarios. I am still waiting on mine from Canon, after more than 3 months with no info on when they might ship. I will never buy direct from them again, unless it is absolutely necessary. Do look forward to giving that lens a good workout on my R7 if I can ever get a hold of it. I can see myself using it mostly for very open habitats like beach/shoreline, bodies of water or shooting those subjects that rarely come down from upper portions of trees, to reduce that elevation angle. Thanks again for the quality content & glad you could have a nice morning filming it. May there be many more of those days ahead, mate. Enjoy that field time & best of luck bagging something special. Con: still unavailable in Sweden! At least when not forking out those appr $3000 many months in advance, which I won't do before all costs with the upcoming Aussie trip are covered... (We're still waffling about which dates to go, since our preferred departure date is $500 more than the day after. The day after [Sept 5] makes domino effects down the line for 2 weeks🙄) Anyway, there were many excellent shots shown here, on top of getting video of you gallivanting happily around Winton Wetlands (my fave kind of video!) It's hard to pick a favourite, bcs they were all top notch (maybe with exception of those shy Rosellas), but in a way that lucky shot with the Sulphur-crested flying low over the grassland wormed itself up to the top of the list🤩 The headshots of the Kangaroos were also worthy of glad excitement! No Antechinus, but it can't be expected every time (wrong part of Winton Wetlands, I suspect), but it can be easily remedied, thanks to the Duade-emojis:

I am looking forward to eventually purchasing this lens. R7 with 200-800 plus R5 with 100-400 is like the ultimate combo. But the problem is that you can’t just invest in camera gear. You also need a fully stocked home gym.

Fantastic shots. I'm looking to rent the 200-800 for a trip around Skomer Island. This was a great introduction. I'll be using it with my R50 so getting an idea with it on the APS-C is really useful. Love the channel.

Really nice. I just sold my R7. Turns out since I got the R6mk2 I never used it anymore, despite the crop. I might get a 1.4xTC eventually, but have resisted since it's not full range with the 100-500. Waiting for the 200-800 to become available!

Great video Duade. Definitely a combo for me. I live on the island of Malta just in the middle between Europe and Africa. By the end of February the great Spring migration will begin and due to poachers and other factors the birds stay high in elevation and distance. Undeniably this lens is a no brainer for me together with the R7. I am particularly not a friend of teleconverters.

Great video. I am on the list for the 200-800 and have both the R7 and R6ii. It is amazing how many people don't like the R7, on "Focus on Photography" that took over from "Photography on the Net" forum several people really blast it. Yes it has some cons like no battery grip although I made my own grip by cutting the extension off a BG2 and it really makes it more comfortable to use. While waiting on my 200-800 I am using the 100-500 with RF1.4x giving almost the same range but at a lesser focal range (300-500). The ISO can be dealt with for the most part in Topaz. Thanks again for a great video!

Great video as always Duade and a really useful review of the 200-800. I have a Canon R5 and a Canon 100-500 which I use for wildlife photography, mainly birds and in particular small birds. I have a back up system which is a Canon R8 which I sometimes use this with a Canon 70-200 f2.8 for larger/closer subjects. I would like to take more images of wading birds and small birds further away. I am considering changing the R8 for an R7 to give me more reach and pairing the R7 with the new Canon 200-800. My question is, with the new 200-800, would you stick with the R8 and crop the image more or would you swap to an R7 which, as you know, has a greater FOV (1280) and a higher megapixel count which would also improve IQ when cropping. The downside I predict with the crop sensor is I believe it would give slightly less background separation and a slight reduction in image quality. What would your preferred set up be? Ps. I don’t know if you have shot the R8 very much, but I find if I haven’t used the camera for a couple of minutes, It goes into sleep mode and when I wake it to take a shot, it has forgotten my setting (aperture/speed/ISO) which is very annoying (I’m using it in FV mode with auto ISO. Do you know if the Canon R7 also does this?

Hi Duade, great vid, seeing the wetlands and birds really make me want to visit again, the shots of the male and female wren were exactly what I was trying for I did get some but not what I really liked and definitely not to the standard what you have shown. Your enthusiasm really comes across in the videos which just makes me want to get the camera out and get shooting. The lens and R7 combo look awesome, I have hardly read a bad thing about the lens apart from a few small gripes so really looking forward to seeing your review.

Hey Duade! Wondering what you would personally do in my situation. I don’t have the rf100-500. Pre-ordered the 200-800 months ago and still don’t have it. I do however have the rf1.4x extender. I currently have a sigma 150-600c that I use for my wildlife photography and I’m almost always at 600mm.(obviously can’t use the rf extender on that lens). Is the rf100-500 still the better lens (with or without the 1.4x) since it will undoubtedly be better than my sigma OR do I continue to wait for the 200-800? Running out of patience (and time as we’re going on vacation in May and I want a new lens by then). Thank you and great video!

I have this combo and it's amazing! I also have the R5 and use that quite a bit. The AF in the R7 just seems to miss shots compared to my a6700 and 200-600 combo. While I get the eye AF box on the screen when I take the shot maybe 20% are out of focus. Maybe Canon will fix this in a future firmware. Thanks for the great video, Cheers.

My experience was similar, until I slowed down the frame rate based on Duade's discussion. It just seems to need a bit more time to acquire focus, perhaps due to a slower sensor and processor (?). So while Canon may have exaggerated the max frame rate, I can live with this. It is an awesome combo.

A lovely fun informative video Duade. I've got an R5, and 100-500 RF. and 1.4X. Do I get a 200-800 for added reach...or wait and get the R5-II with no rolling shutter and better AF? Your thoughts.
