I was struggling trying to line up the rack and snail for hours. I watched your video and seconds later I was able to line it up perfectly. My rack tail wasn't in the middle of the step and my strikes were very inconsistent. Thanks for the detailed explanation and helping me keep my sanity for another day!

The oil was as dried out as I've seen. On the escape wheel, it was almost like charcoal. Probably was oiled with something like 3-in-1 oil instead of clock oil.

Mr. Perry, If you remove a movement to get chains back on the movement and it was a new clock( reason for removal small), and you put it back together and get no cuckoo calls, I guess you have to remove it again right. Not sure if lift levers were in right position. Please advise. Thanks😊
@dperry428
@dperry428 Жыл бұрын
If all you did was refit the chains to the chain wheels, there is nothing that should necessitate the removal of the movement unless something got damaged when the movement was taken out and the chains replaced. You have two lift levers. the longer one should be connected to the whistle on the right (as you look at the clock from the back) and the shorter one should be connected to the whistle on the left. When they are in place, make sure the levers are moving freely and not interfering with each other. Look at the wire on the bellow top of the left whistle that lifts the bird's tail. If it is on top of the tail, the strike may stall. Make sure it's under the tail. Other than that, about the only other thing would be if something on the front (the rack, snail and levers) were bent during the movement being worked on. I can't help with that without actually examining the movement.
@dperry428
@dperry428 Жыл бұрын
One more thing. When you removed the movement, how did you disconnect the bird from the door? Did you remove the bird from the perch? Make sure the bird is situated on the perch such that it does not get caught up on the door frame, either on the sides or on the bottom of the opening.
@sherrisurles1155
@sherrisurles1155 Жыл бұрын
Thank you, I did notice the tail lift was over the bird instead of under, fixed that. Hoping that will fix it. Yeppers I had the lift levers on the correct bellows. I thought I had heard that you needed to be sure that lift wires needed to be put on after the bird has cuckooed. I was dreading taking the movement out out again cuz the cuckoo house is too little to get you hands in. You have to take the movement out for anything. Hopefully tail wire will be the fix. You are so amazing at what you do and I appreciate your videos. Thank you for your response.😊

Any reason why my cuckoo clock will run for a while and keep great time, then for no reason it will begin to either gain or lose time? I move the pendulum a very small amount either up or down depending on whether is gaining or losing and the clock will run fine and keep good time for a while and then the whole process begins again. Any ideas what causes this? The clock is level and screwed to a wall that is solid. I have oiled the clock per your instructions.
@dperry428
@dperry428 Жыл бұрын
The open pendulum, made of wood, is exposed to changes in the environment, especially humidity. If the air is moist, the wood takes it in, changing both the mass and the length of the pendulum. In the winter, heated air is much less humid and the pendulum will dry out, losing both mass and length. Changes in temperature, too, affect the pendulum length. Drafts from forced air heating, doors being opened and closed and even people walking by can significantly affect the pendulum's swing, altering its time keeping. Cuckoo clocks are notoriously poor time keepers. They are enjoyed for their novelty. You can improve their timekeeping by controlling environmental fluctuations -- not an easy task.

Great to see you doing a clock again.Need to pick your brain.How do I fix the cuckoo door so that it closes all the way after the strike.thank you,Don take care.
@dperry428
@dperry428 Жыл бұрын
There are at least 3 possible reasons for the door not closing. 1. The spring that operates the bird's perch may not be tight enough (not a usual cause). 2. The wire connecting the bird to the door may be too long (not a very common cause). 3. The wheel that has the gathering pallet on it is also the wheel that has the black tabs on it that opens the door. The wheel may be slightly out of position such that one of the tabs is pushing on the lever that opens the door, keeping the door from closing completely. (most likely cause if the clock has been disassemble for service). Remedy is to remove the gathering pallet and allow the strike train to run enough to move the offending black tab to a position where it doesn't contact the door-opening lever. Then move the train just enough to put the warning pin against the stop lever (at top edge of movement). Then reinstall gathering pallet with the lever pin in the depression of the gathering pallet.

I can't this season. For the most part, I only work on clocks during the winter as I'm busy landscaping and working concrete art during fair weather. I'm up to my ears with clocks right now and can't possibly take on any more until autumn. I'm also "elderly" (just turned 80 last month) and can't take clocks that may sit around for any significant time. Only heaven knows how long I'll be here.

I don't know. I won't publish my own email. I get enough crap already. KZbin will censor most attempts to post a link beyond KZbin. You can try to make a comment with your email spelled out in words, like the word "at" for the symbol and "dot" for the period. I will then contact you and delete the comment without publishing it.

Just try to do it, however you think it should work. I have no idea what will actually work. Google and KZbin did away with personal messaging a few years ago because they said no one used it. Now, they censor outside links for heaven knows what reason. Leave it to them to screw up a simple need for people to communicate. Kind of screws up the meaning of "social media", doesn't it?

How long Last a cuckoo clock machine if oiling each 2-5 years
@dperry428
@dperry428 Жыл бұрын
Depends on the environment to which it is exposed. Hang it in a kitchen where grease and dirt will accumulate and it won't last 5 years. Keep it clean and it will likely run for 25 years or more. Oiling by itself does no good if it's added to dirty pivot holes.
