To me the most helpful thing in this video was how you straightened the bent pivot on the strike side wheel that holds the gathering pallet by putting the wheel in your lathe to see how far out of true it was and using a hollow punch to straighten it. Also interesting was your discussion of adjusting how much slack to leave between the loop end of the mainsprings and the edge of the spring clamp to make it easier to reassemble the movement.

if you're working with temperatures above 90F, would you consider adding some sugar to the mix? If so, how much? Maybe use cold water instead and a covering canopy if outside? Because it looks like you'll be pressed for time especially for beginners like me. About my project- Make simulated stones in a 4ft tall and 75ft long retaining wall that's already in place. I was planning on 1-cleaning first, 2-Attach an overlapping fiber mesh, 3-Create your mix with a little more water add 25% thin set adhesive to prepare wall. 4- Followed by your mix more peanut butter to create 1/2 to 0.75 in thickness, 5- stamp or use other means to create stone-like figures, 6-paint, 7- Matte seal. Thoughts?
@dperry4283 күн бұрын
I would be VERY careful using sugar as a retarding agent. The dosage is about .05 to .06% of the weight of CEMENT in the mix. More than .1% could result in a mix that never sets. If you're intent on using a retardant, then purchase a commercial retardant. For your type of project that is going to be done in relatively small doses over a period of time, you can retard, as I did from time to time, by simply putting ziploc bags of ice in the liquid used to make the mix. Personally, if it's above 90 degrees, I'm not going to work outside very long. I made this particular video for those that were wondering about mixes they'd seen that worked like clay. I use this mix only for sculptural areas where the mix is directly affected by gravity, such as the underside of a concrete railing or application in an overhead situation. For your project, I'd use a 3 to 1 sand/cement ratio for base or scratch coat and 2 to 1 or 1 to 1 for finish coats or decorative things like rocks. As far as thinset, I have read of people who are doing decorative concrete using half cement mix and half thinset, but I have no experience trying it myself. You might, if you haven't already, take a look at my chain-link conversion project I did a number of years ago. There are several videos in this playlist: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iHKnf36BmdOGhNE

I make my own mix ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/m2XNZqSdg6uEe5Isi=28WAE-pOBMXLoAzQ ) of 1 part portland cement with 1 part fine sand, sometimes 2 parts cement to 1 part sand. I also add 20 percent of the cement content in metakaolin. I use acrylic, also called acrylic admix/bonding agent in the liquid and to coat the old concrete to bond the new mix. Stores such as Home Depot, Lowes carry acrylic in small quantities and may be called "concrete fortifier" or "concrete bonding agent". You'll find it in the department where concrete and cement are sold. I get my additives from Fishstone in Crytal Lake, Illinois ( concretecountertopsupply.com/ ). There are commercial mixes that can be purchased. Look into a mix called Pal Tiya www.paltiya.com/.

Nice work, especially fabricating the replacement brass part that holds the two wires that activate the music box. It looks like the music box plays two tunes, one on the even hours and one on the odd hours. From what I understand, one wire releases the music box and the other stops the fan in a sort of warning phase before it is released and the music box runs. I am wondering what stops the music box at the end of the tune. What causes it to lock?
@dperry4288 күн бұрын
The two tunes are for hour and half hour. The music box stops when the tab that runs on the end of the pin drum drops into a hole on the end, the edge of the hole pulls on the tab, which is part of the larger lever that the wire pushes down. another part of that same brass lever has an extension with a piece of plastic tubing on it. As the whole lever is pulled by the hole in the drum, that piece of plastic is pulled into the path of the governor fan and the music box is stopped. At the next time for playing, when the tab is lifted out of the hole, the plastic piece is retracted, releasing the governor fan that then rotates until it meets the second wire that acts as a warning device, getting the box ready to play at the end of the cuckoo sequence.
@dperry4288 күн бұрын
BTW, some cuckoos with two tunes may be just as you suggested, and the levers and wires can be adjusted to make the box either play on just the hour or on both the hour and half-hour. One can tell by simply setting it up one way, for example to play just on the hour, and then watch the weights over a period of a couple days. If the music box weight lags way behind the time and strike weights, one then knows it was built to play on both hour and half-hour. On the other hand, if a clock is set to play on both hour and half-hour and the music weight hits the floor long before the other two weights, then, clearly it was designed to play on just the hour.

@dperry42819 күн бұрын
That's simply not true. If it's only running a minute or two, it likely needs cleaned and rebushed. The pivot holes are worn because of running year after year after year without being serviced. Once properly serviced, they run as reliably as any other clocks of this type.

Normally the lift lock lever has got bent on you and that is why it only cuckoos one time. This happens when the clock hands are turned backwards when the clock is cuckooing. Rack and snail movements are designed for the hands to be turned backwards but not when the clock goes into warning or when it is cuckooing. Glad that you discovered that it was too close to the case. That is why they call them cuckoo clocks because you can go cuckoo trying to figure them out and why most clock repair people dont want to work on them. So great job. Great video.
@dperry428Ай бұрын
That's not what happened here. I didn't know that, before I was sent the clock, another person had put in a new movement. It turned out the new movement was slightly different in dimensions or the old movement had the mounting tabs bent to keep the the movement further back from the back of the front case panel. The new movement, in either case was slightly further forward, causing the very tip of the rack tail to catch on the case, resulting in the rack failing to fall. That's why it worked fine out of the case on a test stand, but not in the case. Placing 1/32" shims in the case moved the movement enough toward the rear to free the rack tail. Nothing was bent. New movement just didn't fit like the old one. BTW, I read your channel description and saw that you were Air Force. I was, too. 1962 - 1966. Korean linguist. Korea 1963-64. Last station was Goodfellow AFB, San Angelo, Texas. I've been repairing clocks since 1968 and just received my Member of the Golden Circle for NAWCC membership for 50 years.
