The DPMO method to calculate the capability of a process is useful when there is more than one aspect of quality being measured. With two or more quality aspects, the Sigma method ( • Sigma Method for Proce... ) does not work.
Measure only quality characteristics that matter, don't go overboard, this is why they are called "critical to quality" or CTQs.
The table used in this video is derived from the standard Normal distribution N(0,1) and is free of the arbitrary 1.5 sigma adjustment featured in many books. The 1.5 sigma shift implies that the process is not stable, in which case the calculation of capability value makes no sense at all.
Assumption for using this method: the process is normally distributed with a known average and standard deviation.

This allows us to assign a value to what our goal is during a project so that we know what we are aiming for rather than aiming blindly.

Great video about how to calculate DPMO based off of two important defects that you are tracking. I especially liked the part were you used DPMO to set a goal on the reduction of defects.

I also enjoy these videos because they are very relatable to things. Even though the company I work for doesn't delivery pizza's, I am able to still use the idea of a pizza company into my own job.

I am familiar with DPMO slightly as my business uses it as a standard metric. We use DPMO to measure the amount of items pickers skip when fulfilling orders. It includes bot skips that were valid, because the item wasn't there, and False skips, where the picker did not look hard enough essentially. Our goal is

I like the fairly simple math. I'm not a great math student, so I'm glad I could follow. I also appreciate the idea of honing in on ONE aspect to avoid overwhelm. Also, it's interesting to see what goes in to working backwards, e.g., coming up with the goal/solution first and then knowing what to plug in to arrive to it. Doesn't get much more straightforward than this.

I've seen this type of calculation with errors at a previous company I worked for, I have not seen it detailed out like this however with formal equations. Makes more sense now.

This was another good video of how to tie the sigma of a process, the yield, and the DPMO together. I liked how this video walked through problems where you needed to use the DPMO process to get a number, and how to use that number in some other equation that you needed to get the answer to the question.

This makes complete sense when you have more than 1 defect possible and need to calculate both defects/ quality issue. Great video and very easy to follow.

Well, it is safe to say, the presenter of these assessments and calculations needs to be versed in basic math. If not, the predictions and processes would be moot. Getting out side of the math issues, the presentation in this process and proving what is needed to become closer to your Sigma target if beautifully laid out. Makes me wonder, why every business or organization is not utilizing the Six Sigma method in its entirety. Yee-haw!

Good example of relationship of DPMO, Yield and Sigma and helpful to use understandable pizza/food delivery with 2 quality aspects of timeliness of delivery and completeness of order. I could watch this again to get more out of it, too!

DPMO is a great tool to help drill down on the quality of multiple aspects of a single process and correct multiple defects that may be slowing down the entire process as a whole.

Similar to Sigma Method for Process Capability, it shows how important to have consistency with the product and keep the standard deviation low. Additionally, even though yield looks very low, there will be defect when the total pool is very large as million. This shows that some of the critical products like airplanes, injectables, and other things that can harm people greatly need to have very hight standards.

DPMO lets you look at more than one problem at a time. This is great when you can tie it together with the Fishbone.

More than 1 quality metric need to be measured together, then the DPMO is a way to determine quality over more factors.

Shouldn't sigma level be 3.6 instead of 2.1. I checked the sigma level table. With DPMO of 17800 sigma value is 3.6 and yield of 98.22%. Overall method of explaining the whole formula was great however someone please confirm the end result if it is correct or not.

Hi Ahmad, good question. The sigma level of 2.1 in the table is correct. Any table that does not have a DPMO of 500,000 for Sigma=0 is off. Motorola shifted the table by 1.5 sigma arbitrarily and made an error in the statistics of long-term capability.
