With a price of 1049 Euro for the body it's really closer to the prosumer range than entry level or even above-entry like the d5600. Main problem are still lenses, though. It's not a good feeling to invest into a system that the producer is not really focusing on or committed to. Sony clearly prioritizes FE. There really is only one player who takes APS-C even serious and that is Fuji.
@Rohkii5 жыл бұрын
Id Argue Sigma's great sony APS-C lenses support the a6x00 enough that Sony doesn't have to try as hard, especially when they still have FE lenses to work on. The FF Mirrorless is still what Sony is furthest ahead at, them competing with Fuji more aggressively doesnt make as much sense.

Chris is the first one, I've heard mentioning there must be a6500 replacement on it's way too. Thank you! That's why this is lacking in some areas. Also I don't really get why everyone is moaning about the flip screen going up. You can buy a bracket to go under the camera, so you can have the mic on the side and I actually prefer the screen on top. I find it less distracting when I'm in front of the camera, and it's not as noticeable for the viewer either, I find.
@BobFrostV5 жыл бұрын
Agreed, flip up is more comfortable imo. Sony needs to sell that bracket for an underside mic, which would mean that the flip "UP" screen is a purposefully engineered element which I fear it may instead be coincidental. I wouldn't want the next camera to suddenly be Flip down. I worry that Sony is only half-ass'edly trying to meet vlogger demand.

There are no picture profiles on the A9, so while having the contrast turned all the way down, it still has very limited DR in video recording. I think they glossed over the deep upgrades this camera has received over the 6300 and 6500, like the new processor, which is not only tied to the more automatic, reliable autofocus, but also, the speed of the autofocus, when this camera came out, it had the fastest autofocus of all cameras, not just aps c, also the new chip actually brings ~15% more battery life with the same battery, the better colour science, the overheating was completely fixed! Another thing that this review doesn't mention at all, is that the screen doesn't dim at all now, that this camera has the higher quality, magnesium alloy body compared to the 6300, that the menu system is better now, basically being the same as the A7 iii and quite a lot of small, but for some people very major improvement, I'd just like to say that this review was not so DeeP.

What do you mean not a good "vlogging" camera? Video IQ looks great, amazing AF. It is small and great for travel. Does someone need to take selfies 90% of the time when making a travel video? If someone needs to speak to the camera could alway have someone else film or use a tripod and a lavalier mic. Also could use the phone connected to the cam to check if the head is not cropped before hitting "record". Only thing I wish there was a way to monitor audio via BT or headphone jack, to check on background noise when interviewing someone. The AF improvement is really an amazing step forward, with direct Eye AF tracking. No more need of a thumb joystick and no more fiddling when taking portraits or event photos if switching from horizontal to vertical framing. It really allows a photographer to capture the decisive moment, to compose without worrying about where the AF points are or pressing the eye AF button. I hope selfie videos in vogue will just look dated and narcissistic very soon

So, Jordan says there are way better vlogging systems out there. I wonder what those would be? Seems noone makes a small, unobtrusive system that has great video features, great video AF, IBIS, and a good selection of lenses. Canon M, Sony a6xxx, and m4/3 all have some parts of that feature set, but noone has it all, especially not in a small body (the Olympus E-M1 seems to come the closest, but is a pretty intimidating looking body, even though it is small, what will all the dials and levels and buttons). I would be very interested in suggestions on this...

Also no one that vlogs has headphones on monitoring the levels... Saying that I think it would be good to be able to have that option regardless... Ibis, the ibis on the 6500 has already been proven to only really help in situations when taking stills... Vlogging wise there's still tons of jerkiness... If you want steady footage your best option in my opinion is to go for the 6400 for its tracking abilities and just use a combination of lens Oss along with a gimbal...

Guys, after watching this review I understood what's going on. A6500 has IBIS, not on 6400. Sony did this on purpose. Why?? The main goal is to lure and lead, lure competitors like Fuji, Canon, Nikon to fight them at this price point with similar features which directs their focuses on entry/mid category, if they go this route, they're competing with a top popular, sales proven brand - Sony, which is tough, if they're not competing, A6400 will grab sales in this market category. Sony can easily add IBIS with this latest focusing software, faster buffering on the next model which targets mid to high market segment, holding on now because the moment Fuji, Canon and Nikon make their moves, that model will surface. Sony have the advantage because of their leading mirrorless market establishment, they're are in control at this moment and that's what matters in marketing and sales.

Why is it that everyone goes for some half gimped solution instead of full tilt screen? Does some patent troll own that or something?
@Lofote5 жыл бұрын
I am Pretty sure, it is, I can't explain it otherwise. Even panasonic does not do a full tilt screen in the S1 and S1 Pro it seems, so there is probably some stupid patent on "tilt to the side on full Frame sensor cameras".
@maereanm5 жыл бұрын
A fully articulated screen needs to be extended as much as possible from the screen to be able to get any tilt at all on any axis. Sony's solution can be tilted immediately. And the size is improved with Sony's solution. On a half vertical tilt, the Sony camera is much smaller than the ones with a fully articulated screen. When keeping the camera hanging from the neck while sightseeing on vacation and taking a couple of photos every other minute, Sony's solution is very convenient. Some users may need a front facing screen 1 times out of 1000 but use the screen on a regular vertical tilt 900 times out of 1000. I'm personally very pleased that Sony is keeping the current system. And kudos to Sony for keeping the system while also allowing a front facing screen.

Becuae not everyone wants a fully articulated screen cause for many situations they are just plain annoying. So there is no perfect choice
@skakdosmer5 жыл бұрын
I don't know if Canon has a patent, but patents are not stupid - they are necessary! Anybody can get a great idea, but making it function well and reliably takes months or even years of hard and expensive work. Once that work is done, it's often very easy for others to copy. And if that was legal, nobody would invent anything any more, because they would never be able to recover the invested research money. So it's only wise and fair that those who do the work also get paid, and that if other manufacturers want to use the technology, they have to pay their fair share through a license fee to the patent holder.

@@shaolin95 The perfect solution would be that for those who don't want fully articulated screen is to ignore them on the camera. All cameras today should have this feature.

Would you recommend the Canon 80D or the Sony A6400 if I were focused on wildlife videography including macro shots of insects, fish etc.?

Sony must've ignored the complaints of reviewers of the EOS M3, M5 and M6 flip screens and looked at the success of their RX100 series for them to go in the direction they did. The problem is nobody really sticks an external mic on top of an RX100 V.

Great review! I love your common-sense and positive attitude, Chris. Also, you were pretty steady when Jordan said you were hand-holding the camera to film him. It looks like a nice camera at its price point. I think people expect too much these days, the camera companies will run out of improvements if they implement too many every time a new camera comes out.

missed that the screen doesn't dim in 4k, I think that's one of the best upgrades over the 6300.

You should shoot the review video with the camera you are reviewing. Have 2 cameras of the same kind..one to shoot the review and one to carry it with you

Can you recommend a better camera around the $1000 (or less) price range? I have a vacation coming up in less than a week, and I want a nice camera.

Just spent more than $7K today for my A7r III set up. Going to get the A7r IV on launch day around september. The 6400 is only $800 for a bunch of goods that it offers. You all should wait til black friday and it should be around $500 or so.

DPReview or other photography enthusiasts, I plan on going to Tokyo next year and I plan on buying this camera in between now and then. However, I'm not sure what lens to take. I plan on traveling light and I need an all around lens to use for almost everything (portraits of friends, landscape and a few videos). What would be the "jack of all trades master of none" lens to use in all these situations? Thank you for ya'lls time.. P.S. I don't know much about photography but I plan on mastering this camera as much as possible.

Love your honest thoughts on the camera. Not that I am in the market for one (using Pana G9), it is amazing how much tech is stuffed into these cameras. Vlogging camera? I don't see how.

Does a6400 record at variable frame rate or constant frame rate? Will there be any audio sync issue in Adobe Premier Pro?
