Applause for Sony to have gone from 1-axis-only-tilt to the best-of-all-worlds tilt mechanism for the screen, in just a couple of years' time!
@cadmus777

They had it on the A77ii and the A99ii, the first of which was released more than 7 years ago, the only difference seems to be that the hinge was underneath instead of on the outside, so the screen stayed behind the camera. Why it took so long to bring back this obviously better solution baffles me, but I'm glad they finally saw the light!

@@weplaywax the irony of this comment is that the s1r did not have the exact same mechanisim. I had an S1 it had the same mechanism as s1r: they were flip. If you were talking about the S1H, yeah it came out and it was bulky and couldn’t flip down. Sony didn’t invent the 4 axis flip/articulating screen but it did make it thinner and add the ability to tilt down. Not “revolutionary” but its a step in the right direction

Doing the same thing they did with the R II and R III -- keeping the same sensor while improving everything else -- was the right choice. As good as the R IV is, having the old menus, buffer rates, etc. on such a high-end model was kind of a drag. The sensor is fine, everything else was overdue for an update.

I use the A1, which also has video "issues" at full-frame. Its 8K mode is terrific with no significant rolling shutter thanks to the stacked sensor, but the 4K FF modes are horrible. I therefore shoot much of my video in S35, and I added a 10-20 F/4 PZ G to my kit for wide shots. It's an optically solid little lens, and I imagine that it would also be an excellent option for A7RV users that want to shoot wide-angle video. It's also really convenient on a gimbal (extremely compact, power zoom, no CG shift when zooming).

I applaud Sony for addressing most of the A7RIV issues and make a good camera even better, despite the hefty price tag. It also leaves me wondering how great the S1/S1R/S1H could be if only Panasonic had the clarity of mind to add phase detect… Almost all the great things we like in the A7RV were already addressed in 2019 by Panasonic in an even sturdier package with better handling and better color management. If only the AF-C and tracking…

@Jacob, I had the S1H and sold it to a friend for the same reason you mentioned. If you look at all the companies that died or dying like Nokia, Yahoo, AOL, HP, Xerox, RIMM or Blackberry, etc etc, they all had one common denominator, stubborn to a fault. And didn’t focused on staying relevant but focused on a strong belief of being right and therefore stubborn until being obsolete. I loved the colors of Pana even more than Canon and all the tech and video assist tools but the af system was tough to deal with as a one man crew. Sure all the manual focus guys would hang their hat on that real cinema cams uses manual but out of context when you have focus pullers and a big crew and budget. It reminds of the grandparents giving history lessons of walking 10mi+ in snow and even with cars we should walk. Yeah sure! Embrace competition as if you don’t, they have no problem taking your customers away and customers who are discerning, will make the choice that’s best for them. Good to see Sony and Canon duking it out and now Nikon is catching up. Hope Pana gets pass this hump and concede to the hybrid af system that all 3 players have shifted too

I felt Panasonic presented a strong entry into full frame mirrorless. AF was a big issue from the get-go and everyone knew this and as far as I can tell, was willing to give Panasonic a chance if they made an attempt to integrate phase detect AF in future iterations of the S-series. But they stated they had no plans to do so. Seeing this, and seeing how important AF would be in high performance, low-man environments, myself and many others sold our S cameras and jumped ship. It was a painful financial choice to let go of such a promising system. But I feel I'm in a much better place with the Sony system.

For me - landscape, occasional wildlife & street photographer - this has the features I'm missing in my A7Riii. Focus stacking and the multi-axis screen are huge in terms of actual usage and enjoyment of shooting with the camera. They might seem trivial things compared to the autofocus and resolution. Seriously, and this might sound bizarre, if the A7RV had had a normal swivel screen like the A7IV I would not be saving like mad for it.

I've had the a7R III and the a6 series since 2017 since 2019 and it's been in constant use, but I can't say that I've really enjoyed using it. Produced great results but definitely wasn't enjoyable throughout. Still, can't really beat Sony for bang for the buck, especially if you use third-party lenses. Been following their releases to see what's been improved with each generation and the A1 had me hopeful but cautious (given that it's a halo product). Looks like this addressed the major pain points (poor responsiveness, poor back LCD resolution, tilt-only back LCD, no lossless compressed, uneven SD card slots, awful menus, button and dial issues, etc). Wish it hadn't taken them so long, but looks like they've finally fixed those long-time issues. Looking forward to purchasing this on the used market once prices go down.

Sounds great, especially the articulated screen and AI focus imo. The big thing I miss for wildlife is pre-buffered shooting, like OM’s “Procapture.” My suggestion: could you guys do an episode about pre-buffering, in particular how & why it works for OM and others but doesn’t seem possible for Sony? Gotta be a reason, maybe even a good story there. Keep up the great work, thanks!

@@Oakley5100 I shoot focus stacked panoramas, and some environmental portraits. So often, focus stacking (when automated) is implemented poorly - a simple step focus which does not take into account: focal length; aperture; focus distance - depth of field is always non-linear. There is more to it than that but for starters if you don't have that you do not have true focus stacking.

Some nice new features, but you can get a Sony A7R IVa in as new condition for £2300, so an extra £1700 would be difficult to justify for some people. I think if the sensor and buffer had even gone to 15fps it may have been different.

Not worth upgrading from a previous generation body. But as someone switching systems, especially for me from a 15 year old Olympus kit, I am in heaven jumping into Full Frame with Sony at this time. The AF tech is just phenomenal, the EVF best in class, 8-stop IBIS, focus stacking, 200+MP stills and massive resolution at 10FPS all give me extreme flexibility and ease of use. Yes I wish it had a speedy electronic shutter option at lower resolutions but fwiw I think it offers incredible value over the 50MP A1 cost $2000 more.

In an age of quick sharing, it would be nice to be able to apply some small changes and then send a quick version to your phone... At a minimum, even just change the base style applied to the embedded thumbnail. Tiny little Ricoh GR cameras do this and despite their clunky interface, it's a real game changer once you have it, and a continued frustration to see such a simple thing (just at least changing the thumbnail style after shooting) missing on much fancier cameras.

5:16 re wishing for the A1's faster flash sync speed: The reason you want a higher sync speed is to suppress ambient-light ghost images when shooting flash in bright light and/or at wide apertures.1/400 (A1) is only 2/3 of a stop faster than 1/250 (A7RV) so your ghost images would be only 2/3 stop dimmer. No, that's not nothing, but it's not a night-and-day difference either... probably not something that will steer flash shooters away from the A7RV.

Well, I was a long way off from saving enough for an R4, now I'm a long way off from an R5.... For future planning though, how well do apsc e-mount lenses work on full frame e-mount cameras? My current camera is an a6500.

The video concludes saying this is a great camera for stills shooting in studio and landscape environments... I'm looking to upgrade from my old and dying D750 as my main stills shooter, does this mean this camera won't perform as well in all regards as say an old used D750? I shoot long exposure, landscape, portraiture, low light, all Linds of available light stuff, etc. The added video capabilities to pair with my a7s2 as a B-cam is just a bonus for me 👍

in terms of resolution and price you are in the same park as the medium format Especially when you get into a new system. How does this weigh up against each other? And, can Sony's lenses handle this resolution? It is often said that you cannot do sports photography with a medium format..... How did we do that 25 years ago? In many cases it is about the skill of the photographer

I agree that the new multi-angle/position flip-out screen would also have been very nice to have had on the FX30 also. Perhaps Sony's thinking that was video/cinematographers will add a monitor anyway and decided to keep the cost down by using a simpler version. If that were the case, I do wish that Sony would realise that we use a second monitor because the ones on Sony cameras are low in resolution and/or too small to get critical focus when using manual focus. I would much prefer to see a decent monitor on the camera itself than having to add a second monitor that is cumbersome, adds weight and is a faff regardless of how small or wonderful they may be! I do appreciate that the monitor size is camera size dependent.

Finally someone besides Fuji (X-T100) figured out how to make a proper flip screen! Even Fuji never used it again which baffles me.

Just wondering if you know if Sony are going to fix the EVF in the A7R5 ? We have the A74 and are going to send back the A7R5 as we find the resolution drop to distracting. We have had this camera for over a week now and had it setup and factory reset a good few times now to fix the low res issue in the EVF. and its not just when tracking. We were looking forward to using it in the studio but cant bring ourselves to pick it up and just reach for the A74. But if Sony can fix this with firmware update we might just keep it.

In terms of video how does this compare with the A7Siii? Apart from the Siii being able to do 4K at 120 does the Siii have any advantage over the A7R5 for video? This is important as they are pretty much the same price and people are still buying the Siii

Yes, it really misses a lot of opportunities for flash photography without the 1/400s sync speed. I think it is a huge miscalculation for a high resolution camera. 😢
@tdg9281
@tdg9281 2 жыл бұрын
I mean if you really need fast sync and have the budget, just switch a “small” MF camera like the GFX or X2D. It’s very expensive but 1/2000th of a sec flash sync would be incredible

@@tdg9281 I have GFX, the sync speed is only 1/125. Only X2D can do that, but prohibitively expensive

I'm having a hard time justifying the 5 over the 4 I currently have. I think I'll wait for a A9iii and see how that turns out. I'm not on the plan to upgrade yet, that is coming in a year or maybe 2 depending on the camera rumor mill.

It might not be worth it to upgrade from 4 to 5. I'm also waiting for the A9III. I guess it will have a 33MP stacked sensor with the same AI chip as the A7RV, but 20FPS and faster readout.

This may be an evolution of the iv, but it seems like a damn good evolution. Some of the issues like the screen tilt or painful menu design weren't directly related to camera quality, but they definitely mattered for actually using the thing.

I had the A7 and A7r2, and still use the A7r3, having skipped the A7r4, but there is not a lot to tempt me to make the jump to the A7r5, even though I mostly shoot stills. For daily photography A7r5 is just too much camera, and I use my Sony RX1R and Ricoh GRs instead. For portraits and most landscape, I find the sensor and resolution of the A7R3 to be more than adequate for 99% of my needs. Just my two cents. I am a long-time photographer and still think my Nikon d850 is the best overall camera to date, notwithstanding the relative benefits of mirrorless tech.

I love the flip out screen. For now I'll stick with my A7R4, especially since spouse bought me a new iPhone 14 Pro. Seeing the need for a camera less and less. Though, I confess, I do love my three Sony G Master lenses. Well, someday I'll upgrade.

I’m a still photographer that does single human model click, from the a7rIV this doesn’t feel like the upgrade at all. Same picture quality, more pixels would have been easier choice. Right now, I feel like I need a medium format camera from sony or I may have to switch if Sony is maxed out here. Thanks for not a being a complete chill & completely selling out to a brand.
