The main reason why North Korea faces severe economic difficulties was basically adopted by most socialist countries. It is due to the inherent inefficiency of the 'planned economy' that experienced failure. In addition, the closed 'self-rehabilitation principle' adopted in the middle and small ideological disputes, the 'pre-military policy' that puts manpower and resources first into the military sector, and the lack of 'social infrastructure' that is helpless against natural disasters such as drought and flooding.

During 60s and 70s, North Korea did have high living standard, but as 80s went on and USSR started crumbling, so did North Korea. Kim Il-Sung, just like Mao Zedong, truly believed that Juche philosophy and political system he created were perfect and best for his people. Now the question is what did his political advisors and people around him were telling him that was going on. They were probably as usual making him think it was paradise and everything was perfect, which it wasn't.

True that. Kim Il Sung thought of building his nation first, but when the USSR collapsed they lost all financial backing, then he died and Kim Jong Il took power, then there was a series of floods, droughts, storms, and one of the most terrible famines of the 20th century.

Kim Il sung while still a dictator was definitely the best. Sung was a guerrilla fighter and leader against the Japanese Empire during WWII and he was a man who knew a thing or two about struggle, bloodshed and sacrifice. Under his rule there was a time where the North was economically ahead of the South particularly through the 1970s and 1980s. The 1990s is when everything bad that we now associate with the DPRK started. Kim jong il was a spoiled brat who knew nothing about fighting or struggle and it’s through him is how the famine, the isolation and the utter deterioration really skyrocketed.
@hihihi5182 жыл бұрын
@@alexandertheresurrection2810 Propaganda regarding North Korea was still prominent before the 90s. If you read Kim Il Sung’s speeches, he mentions how Rhee Syngman would talk of North Korea as if it’s a destitute land. A lot of older South Koreans grew up on believing North Korean falsehoods as evident truth. The famine was exacerbated largely because of economic sanctions that were out of Kim Jong Il’s power. Kim Jong Il attempted to open their economy and join the World Bank/IMF and were promptly rejected. You could argue that Kim Jong Il’s nuclear policy could’ve been handled better I suppose? But the US has reared its warheads at North Korea for quite some time and has actively failed to meet their ends of various treaties/agreements which led to KJI’s absolute distrust of the US which was reflective of his foreign policies.

For those who wonder why they keep pointing and gesticulating: it's part of the propaganda to present the 2 leaders of North Korea as God-like figures with divine wisdom and divine inspiration. Like a God would just gesture and snap his fingers and things would happen, that's how they want to present them. At least North Korea gets things done, you want to build a subway and it's built. Here in the U.S. it takes years just to get something built. Too much corruption.
