For me, he represents the aspects of Joker and Batman that can never lose to the point of an incredible level of suspension of disbelief. He always has plans within plans, is caught because he plans to be caught, dies and then inherits the powers of Dr Manhattan, the list goes on. I can handle a character like that in short bursts, and in the context of the original Metal, I thought it was intriguing if a bit over the top. Unfortunately, as much as I liked Snyder’s Batman run, I haven’t been as into his Batman-related writing since, of which I count Metal and a lot of the BWL narrative since. At this point, BWL’s additions to the lore severely weakens other aspects like the aforementioned Dr Manhattan, the stakes of the omniverse, and the infected effectively hijacking several prominent characters to up the stakes. I also thought it was strange that most of the time, he was alone, and then when it felt necessary to prove he has muscle, his Robins would show up crowing and barring. I get it though, because having them around constantly would also be tiring. It would be nice if the character had some proper send off with Death Metal, even if temporary, because frankly, it is fatiguing seeing him everywhere pulling the strings of everything in the DCU ever since he was introduced. Just my opinions. It’s a bummer because I was excited for him and the other Dark Knights in the original Metal (particularly the Red Death), but several omniversal journeys later with him, I’m a bit done with the concept.

The Batman Who Laughs is a horrific combo of The Joker and Batman. It all starts with the Joker learning Bruce Wayne and Batman are the same person, leading to a majority of the Bat Family's allies being wiped out before a massive Joker Gas Attack on the city was unleashed. The Bat Family and Justice League later gets wiped out, with Superman shown in some of the panels holding his family before they die in the video. Consider it a big sign to be careful of the Bat Who Laughs as Batman and the Joker in Prime Earth join forces to defeat the villain

As a comic nerd, I feel the need to explain that The Batman who laughs isn't Joker but you aren't far off. It is still Batman, but a mental broken Batman that has been exposed to the most potent of joker venoms. It basically gave Batman all of Joker's murder mentality. Joker took single child families, and brought them into the same alleyway that Batman had his parent's shot and killed at and had all these kids watch as he killed their parents while Batman was stuck incapacited watching the whole thing. Batman had to fight through a mega doses of sedatives and muscle relaxers just to get to Joker and snap his neck, but when he did, it released a joker gas that was stored inside him and Batman got is sprayed directly into his face. Under this joker toxin, he calls in his whole Batfamily and guns them down in cold blood, then systematically takes down the justice league in the worst ways he could imagine

So to breakdown the batman who laughs: basically Batman Who Laughs is a jokerized batman in the dark multiverse aka a “what if”scenario. Bruce got tired of Joker causing mayhem that one night and killed joker. The joker died and released a laugh toxin turning bruce into the new joker. The title of the song is called “Final Laugh” in the Death Metal run, The Batman Who Laughs, who is now The Darkest Knight (spoilers btw) battled OUR Batman for the multiverse. OUR batman decided to think like The Darkest Knight and turn crazy and activated the “Final Laugh” protocol which is basically our batman turning into Batman Who Laughs. Another bar in there was about the Grim Knight, which is also another version of Batman that people call Punisher Batman and hes from another Earth in the Dark Multiverse. Theres like alot of more Evil Batman from the Dark Multiverse. I recommend reading the Death Metal run to actually know more about these versions of Batman and joker which is like the main focus of the comic run. And its pretty crazy and i wont spoil the ending just know….some crazy shit happened 😂😂😂

So, I know this was mentioned by a lot of commenters but I'll add on: The Batman Who Laughs is Batman who kills the Joker, releasing a toxin in Joker's body into the nearby vicinity and infecting them with it. Batman being the only one in the vicinity gets infected. He ends up killing off his entire world except for several children that were infected by Joker Toxin and Bruce had intended to try and cure, instead dressing them up like little Robins and chaining them up like dogs. He is from a Negative Universe, along with several other opposing versions of Batman that try to come to the Positive Universe in order to destroy it. The plotline happens during a series called Dark Nights: Metal, and each Justice League member (for the most part) has their own negative counterpart (The Batman Who Laughs is Batman's reverse, for example).

The Batman who laughs isn’t the joker, when the joker pushed Batman too far Batman killed him, but joker planned his own death so he made it so his body would release toxic gas when he died.
