Y'know, something I'm noticing in about the criticism towards the evolution lines is that they "don't make sense." The thing is, they do make sense, it's just that they don't entirely make sense in the context of other monster catching franchises, mainly Pokemon. Digimon sticks more to a theme and the various ways you can expand off of that theme (major change being the objective), while in Pokemon, the designs try to incorporate concepts while maintaining design cohesion. In the end, it's just a stylistic difference, and I understand completely why Digimon often times comes off as a little jarring. Edit: Sorry for writing an essay in your comments section 😅

This reminds me when I got my friend into digimon and he was so confused but after explaining how typing and personality effect them also where the digimon are from he just enjoy he saw new things every season lol

yeah, without context digimon can be seriously confusing. too much goes into deciding possible evolution paths. that's without taking into consideration world/server exclusives.

The thing to understand is that Any Digimon can become any Digimon of the next level. The games tend to just make them tangentially related, such as making them all dinos, or all bug themed.
