TITHES (A Tenth of Everything) IS FOR THE PRIESTS The case of Melchizedek and Aaronic Priesthood. Hebrews 7 Tithing preceded the law because even Abraham gave tithe to Melchizedek: For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him, and to him Abraham apportioned a tenth part of everything. See how great this man was to whom Abraham the patriarch gave a tenth of the spoils! And those descendants of Levi who receive the priestly office have a commandment in the law to take tithes from the people, that is, from their brothers, though these also are descended from Abraham. But this man who does not have his descent from them received tithes from Abraham and blessed him who had the promises. The tithes and first fruits belonged to God, and he assigned the Levites (Priests) to receive them on his behalf (Numbers 18:12-13, 21, 24). They could keep 90 percent of what they were given, but had to give 10 percent as an offering (verses 26-32). Tithing was done in the days of Hezekiah (2 Chr. 31:5-6), Nehemiah (Nehemiah 10:35-39; 12:44) and Jesus though not by Him or His disciples (Matthew 23:23; Luke 11:42). In Malachi’s day, tithing was required (Malachi 3:8-10), and physical blessings were promised for obedience, just as physical blessings were promised for obedience to the old covenant. Tithing in the new covenant Now let us consider whether tithing is required in the new covenant. Tithing is mentioned only three or four times in the New Testament. Jesus acknowledged that the Pharisees were very careful about tithing (Luke 18:12), and he said that they should not leave it undone, because they are under the law since Christ had not yet died and the era of grace not yet begun (Matthew 23:23; Luke 11:42). Tithing, like other old covenant rules and rituals, was a law at the time Jesus spoke. Jesus criticized the Pharisees not for tithing, but for treating tithing as more important than mercy, love, justice and faithfulness. In Matthew 23:23 and Luke 11:42, Jesus rebuked the Pharisees and the teachers of the Law, by calling them hypocrites who only keep some of the law (i.e. Tithing) and neglected others. In order words, they must keep all the laws if they must be justified by the law. DECEIT - (Occurs when one is concealing or misrepresenting the truth) All I have mentioned so far till this point are all the wonderful arguments employed by most Pentecostal pastors and church leaders to misrepresent the truth and support their practice of collecting tithe. But have we wondered why neither Jesus nor any of his disciples practice the act of tithe collection, order than them mentioning it as a recognized practice within the former priestly order. WHO IS THE PRIEST OF THE NEW COVENANT? The only other New Testament mention of tithing is in Hebrews. The fact that Abraham was blessed by and gave tithes to Melchizedek illustrates the superiority of Melchizedek and Jesus Christ over the Levitical priesthood (Hebrews 7:1-10). The passage then goes on to note that “when the priesthood is changed, the law must be changed also” (verse 12). There was a change of the priesthood from the Levites to Jesus Christ, and this implies a change in the law that assigned the Levites to be priests. How much has been changed? Hebrews says that the old covenant is obsolete. In other words the package of laws that commanded tithes to be given to the Levites is obsolete. THE MAIN DUTY OF A PRIEST IS TO BE THE GO BETWEEN THE PEOPLE AND THEIR GOD, TO MAKE ATONEMENT FOR THEIR SINS, INTERCEDE AND UPHOLD THEM AND PRESENT THEM BLAMELESS BEFORE THEIR GOD. The only one that can and is in a position to do this for us is only Jesus Christ. No pastor can achieve this, neither is it their duty to. We have but only one high priest - Jesus Christ. The Levitical priests could not accomplish this, hence a change was needed. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO CLARIFY AND CORRECT THE NOTION THAT PASTOR’S ARE PRIEST. Pastors, reverends, any other ordained minister and even the Disciples of Christ were never called to be priests to the church, no it’s not their duty - I know they like to think so. But they are mere leaders of the people of God and ministers of the word, they cannot make atonement for the sins of the church because Jesus has done that already, nor can they uphold and present their church members blameless before God, only Christ did and can do that. He offered the sacrifice for our sins ones and for all. So Pastors being not Priests, are not entitled to collect tithes. The example of tithing under the priesthood of Jesus Christ our only High priest was represented by the kind of tithing Abraham gave to Melchizedeke - That which cost you nothing because it is by grace. Christ paid it for us full and complete. Just like Abraham never gave anyone a tithe from his personal possessions but only from the spoil of war ones and for all, which he gave the remaining 90th to the original owners of the goods. So unlike under the law, grace is free and cost you nothing, less any should boast. However, the Lord has promised to provide for the needs of all that labour in His vineyard. For the Scripture says in 1 Timothy 5:18: "You must not muzzle an ox to keep it from eating as it treads out the grain." And in another place, "Those who work deserve their pay!" As such, all that labour in the house of God - not just the pastors, are entitled to receive some material reward for their efforts. What the Lord promised is to provide your needs not your wants, so if you are a pastor and you are taking of God’s money, more than your daily needs, you have become very rich and storing the excess away in banks for your children’s children, you are living extravagantly and so on, whereas some of God’s children whether there are in your church or outside your church are going hungry. I have news for you, God says you are the one robbing His store house. You are the thief and judgement is coming. You be the judge, whether the Gospel would have gone this far, if the Disciples of Jesus Christ were busy getting rich from the money offered to God, or selling the word of God in any manner of form. Christians should honor God by voluntarily returning some of the blessings He gives them to support the work of spreading the gospel - this is still a valid principle. However this should not be a compulsory, mandatory, guilt and fear of judgement imposed giving tactics employed by today’s pastors, but a free-will self imposed giving. The theological background for this idea is Christ’s high priesthood. Christ is the High Priest who ends all priesthood. The Old Testament passage most often quoted by the New Testament is Psalm 110:1-4. In verse 4 it says, “The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind. Thou art a Priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek.” Hebrews 7 offers a full scale explanation of this priesthood. Christ’s priesthood is not from the tribe of Levi as was all Old Testament priesthood. He is a priest not of the old order but of a new order, that of Melchizedek. Christ is sinless whereas priests were sinful. Christ offered himself whereas priests offered bulls and goats. Christ’s sacrifice is once for all whereas the priest’s sacrifice was ongoing and continual. Because of this higher order of priesthood, all human priesthood is fulfilled and abolished. Yet strangely because of Christ’s high priesthood, and because we are now in him, Christians not just pastors have all become priests not unto one another but unto God. Because of Christ, believers are now all prophets, priests, and kings. Christ followers are now part of a “royal priesthood” that prophetically proclaims his message.

The LORD Jesus said that Heaven and Earrh shall pass away but not one jot of the law shall pass away. You gave a private interpretation when you interpreted Mathew 23: 23. Tithing is required now. God and His word never change. Many people are in Hell today bc they are considered robbers for failing to pay tithe. Its good to be wrong now andbe considered right at last. The laws of God are still active n Christ. But God changed a method to keep the law by giving us the Lord Jesus as the LAMB OF GOD to take away our sins and wash us from within. The same law of God is now written in our hearts. That's why the LORD said that He would make a new covenat with the House of Israel and write His laws in our hearts. It is covenant of grace. Gods moral commands to Moses are not obselete.

The best exposition on this tithing matter so far.This whole tithing thing is just a nomenclature...Should only be seen as a form of giving. We should even in this dispensation give more than the 10% as the Apostles did in Acts 2:42-47. I love that quotation ..."we don't need to use percentage for men born of the Spirit". Example; we know the apostles did not teach or practice tithing through statements of the church fathers. Just one example for you. "The Jews were constrained to a regular payment of Tithes; Christians who have liberty assign all their possessions to the Lord bestowing freely not the lesser portions of their property since they have the hope of greater things." (IRENAEUS 130-202AD). Tithing was never practiced by the early church.

I have been seriously blessed by your teaching on this topic of tithing, I am a teacher of the word myself and I knew this truth about tithes and offering more than twenty five years ago. The church that I attended give generously but as believers purpose in their hearts and not ten percent because ten percent is tithing. Tithe is a mathematical word and nothing spiritual about it, because the ancient people even before Abraham gave ten percent to their gods. To them the given of ten percent is considered as the given of ALL. Maybe that’s where Abraham learned this from when he gave tithe to Melchizedek as God did not command or instruct him to give. Abraham just did it out of his own generous heart and in appreciation to God. The grace will help us to give more to God and His work as he prospers us. Prosperity gospel is a gospel of hell. In the New Covenant, no Apostle ever taught tithing, asked for a tithe, rebuked any person or church for not tithing, or received a tithe themselves. Not one of them. The early church (i.e. Book of Acts) NEVER tithed. We have NO record of them doing so. If based on the New Covenant, that Christians should be tithing, tithing instructions would be clearly included in the New Covenant for us to follow. We cannot tithe based on the Old Covenant because all tithing God had commanded in the Old Covenant was based on the Law of Moses, we are not under the Law of Moses. For Christians under the New Covenant, no such tithing instructions, terms, conditions or details are outlined anywhere in the New Covenant for us to follow; they simply do not exist. Tithing has NOTHING to do with Christians or Biblical Christianity. Anyone claiming that a Christian must or should be tithing, evening claiming that tithing "is not exactly commanded, but you should still be tithing," is teaching a false doctrine and is lying. >>> The Facts; Clear and Concise on tithing.... > 1. Your pastor can prove he is authorized to receive a tithe, and that he personally owns the tithe, and that it is his inheritance, and it has been taken from the Levites and given to him. Your pastor is claiming you must pay tithes because Abraham did, Jacob said he would, or your pastor said so, when God has NOT said so. Great teaching my respected Pastor. I have always enjoyed your teachings but do not allow people push you into unneeded controversy about certain issues. If the tithes were meant for the Priests ( Levites), we who believe are now Kings and Priests according to Rev. 1:6; 5:10. So if it wasn't evil in the old testament, then it is definitely not in the new. You also made us to understand that Melchizedek is actually the Son of God manifested in the days of Abraham. That also agrees with the Epistles. It is therefore true that He still receives them spiritually while we men receive them on earth (Heb. 7:8) because he lives forever. I agree with you on the point that giving is the emphasis in the gospels. So now we know that the epistles and the gospels are silent on the subject, suffice it to say that those who embrace the practice are right according to the scriptures! Your position on whether we pay or give tithes is also very instructive. Every thing under grace is "given". Only Christ paid anything.

What this controversy has actually aggravated is more tithing in the churches that do collect them and more withdrawals from all forms of giving by those weak minds who are celebrating non payment of tithes. God does reward all types of giving. Take time off to listen to the testimonies of those who are tithing and sacrificing in these mega assemblies and you will advise yourself correctly. Bye bye o!
