In this episode, my guest is Dr. Bonnie Halpern-Felsher, PhD, FSAHM. She is a professor of pediatrics and adolescent medicine and a developmental psychologist at Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Halpern-Felsher is a world expert in adolescent decision-making and risk-taking behaviors.
She explains the huge increase in vaping (e-cigarettes) by young people. She explains why vaping nicotine and cannabis is particularly dangerous to the developing brain. We discuss the rise in vaping addiction, the unique social pressures and social media influences faced by youth that make quitting challenging, and interventions to aid them in quitting or reducing use.
We also discuss the role of technology and social media. And, the use of alcohol, nicotine pouches, fentanyl, and other risky behaviors that adolescents face now.
This episode should interest parents, teachers, coaches, teens, and families. It covers the current youth substance use landscape and also covers resources and ways to quit these addictive behaviors.

Huberman, as a 17 year old I have been surrounded by drugs and alcohol and have chosen not to partake. Initially it was fear of the unknown that kept me away but my friends quickly normalized it. Then I found the Huberman lab podcast. I listened to the marijuana and alcohol episodes and took notes. It is true that education is an extremely powerful tool in combatting these behaviors. Thank you for allowing me to educate myself.

In our household, having difficult and uncomfortable conversations was and is still the norm. My mother was always “up-in-our business” in subtle but non-obtrusive ways. She could effectively read my mood and body language in a matter of seconds when entering a room. Oftentimes, she would lovingly plan a way to get me to open up and talk to her, e.g., a warm chocolate cake with chocolate icing straight from the oven. 🥰My mother would tell me that since we (her children) were a combo of herself and our father, it was her responsibility to understand and guide us through as many generational issues as she could. IMO, it wasn’t just the conversations that kept me out of a lot of trouble, it was watching my parents in action. They are far from perfect but they practiced what they preached. Also, growing up we had one television in the home. We could afford for everyone to have a TV in their room but there was no need since every weekend was filled with activities such as museum visits and trips to the farmers market. I believe those decisions helped balance my relationship with social media and TV. However, I am still working on balancing my love of all things automobile. 😜 Great episode! Keep moving forward, Andrew!

tough choice between being ethical and not making that amount of money or taking advantage of the weak and making mills. one could argue that it's unethical because of the fact that he is aware that it kills people but another argument can be made that it's people's choice at the end of the day and he's not actually obligating his clients to keep buying it. it's his clients who keep promoting said products. very delicate argument

¡Hola Profe! Such an important episode for any parent of teens. I find that it's not enough to talk about these topics at home. Kids spend more than half of their day at school. But when we discuss a lot of those topics on our "teacher-parents" reunions, every discussion that we are having isn't based around educating our kids about the dangers and consequences of these behaviors, but around "not doing it on the school premises".Thank You for all Your hard work and care for all of us.

So I am 22 years old right now, and when I was a child, I had trouble focusing, I went to my doctor and got medication prescribed to me for this medical issue. Nothing makes me want to smoke or vape more then a bunch of adults who take absolutely no responsibility for what they have done in their life times, telling me what to consume and what not to consume( which is what I see in anti tobacco campaigns). Like what I see is a lot of anti tobacco campaigns and anti vaping campaigns, with people who say they have cancer or ETC problem, telling me that vaping and or smoking is bad and I need to be ashamed of it, this is not the way to address this situation, shaming, and or saying what you are doing or want to do is bad, is a great way to make people who want to consume X substance consume it. We need to understand why teenagers and young adults are choosing to use pharmaceuticals to get by in life, and we need to provide medical treatment when necessary. What I have read is these same teenagers who we demonize for vaping because it gets them high, are taking acetylcholinesterase inhibitors such as Donepezil and Gelantamine, which are absolutely horrendous to take, especially in excess because of their side effects. However for these people because it makes them do better on exams, they will use whatever it takes to do well, even if i makes them feel awful. demonizing these people for consumption's of nicotine will only increase its use, these people are not trying to get high, they are trying to get by in a world hostile to the way the human mind evolved to get by in. A large reason why people consume drugs, is because the way life is now is very hostile to the way the human mind evolved to function. What we need to do is understand the needs of these teenagers and young adults, we need to understand the purpose nicotine servers in their life, and replaces it with a better more effective medication, not demonize it. I agree that vaping nicotine is bad and is not the way to go, like with alcohol, it is not that it doesn't work as an anti anxiety drug, it is that their are better pharmaceutical medications that can be used to help said people. We should focus on ways to deal with this said issue, and defeat it, instead of saying nicotine is evil and we need to eradicate it, we should be discussing more effective and safer ways to achieve its desired result, while understanding why people chooses to continue to use the substances.

For me, it was nicotine and Skunk (strong weed) at 14, as well as booze, MDMA at 17, and cocaine at 18. It was great fun at the time, but it for sure negatively affected my mental health. It's not big, not clever, and will not benefit your life in any way shape, or form. Sobriety is far more fun and far more healthy. And for the most part, my mental health has improved drastically since becoming sober and living the correct way (working out, cold showers, healthy eating, sleep, etc).

I’m 25 and I quit vaping 3 months ago, I started when I was 18 in 2017 when the vapes blew up in popularity. It took about 7 years of use and then quit. First couple days really sucked due to withdrawal, and then the next 2 weeks was strong thoughts of going and purchasing one. But after a month I don’t even think about them anymore.
@dartheater7348
@dartheater7348 13 сағат бұрын
Its actually not that difficult to quit. Withdrawal lasts about 3 days, but certain medicines help incredibly. Excedrin, which is a mix of Tylenol, aspirin, and caffeine works like a charm. The stimulant nature and combination of a blood thinner like aspirin and caffeine causes both of them to feel stronger, so you are more alert and have less headache.

I teach high school health and PE. I take surveys of my students, more than 75% of teens at my school voted for vaping nicotine as being the biggest health related problem at our school. Followed by stress, anxiety, lack of sleep, and depression. They are incredibly addicted, and we should be offering more supports to quitting this nasty addiction, rather than simply punishing students. Many teens, who do want to quit, do not know where to get help or support in quitting, they are afraid to ask their parents, teachers, and adults in their lives. Most of my students report being introduced to vaping in middle school, not so much through peer pressure, but they try it because their friends are doing so, and they end up addicted in the process. I teach about the risks and dangers of vaping, and introduce them to quit lines/ websites for teens specifically, but more needs to be done on a larger scale to help the youth today with the vaping crisis. And yes we are seeing much lower physical activity levels, many students struggle with cardiovascular endurance, and even holding a 20-30 second plank. Im sure this is due to more factors beyond vaping, but vaping is playing a role.

I have been a student pastor for 25+ years. Thank you for putting all my assorted observations into one succinct place. I have made most all of these observations over the decades at different points individually. I believe a lot of our current college and HS students (Gen Z) will raise their children like their parents (Gen X) were raised. Opting for their children to be far more independent and less attached to digital entertainment and assumed entitlement. Boundaries lines have slowly blurred since 2010-2013 and our current young adults will have to work to figure out what caused that fade out. I am interested to see what they place the blame on in the next 10-15 years.

As a young addicted man, I think there's something that's way too overlooked: "Can't afford to quit" Not in the monetary sense, rather performance. I'm barely holding on as is, I cannot afford the days/weeks it would put me out of commission. Education and work have deadlines and performance expectations. If you're already on the edge of flunking out/failing and getting fired, then the cost of the withdrawals is simply not one that can be tolerated. And this isn't even mentioning the underlying factors that rear their ugly heads once the cope keeping them at bay disappears. >Suicidal ideation >Depression >Personality disorders >etc So >Teens get addicted in school >Get thrown into the worst economic conditions in living memory >struggle to survive; reinforces cope >Quitting the cope may very well mean not surviving, taking that out of the equation

I am 21 years old. I have had bouts of major depressive disorder since i was 9. I had rough home environments growing up and when i was 17 found a dab pen in behind a picture in my dads room. My environment was extremely cramped, my dad and his girlfriend were indifferent to this discomfort of his children. I began smoking as a coping mechanism. And now at 21, 22 in just a couple months. I have a very hard time stopping. I want to stop. I just am very weak i guess in comparison to others because when i am sober i am vulnerable to depressive episodes. I dont want to feel like everything is meaningless. So i smoke. I live normally in every other way. And i take care of myself pretty well. But i struggle to quit smoking weed. My parents are substance users. And i sometimes feel as if there is no escaping addiction. Freeing myself from weed at times feels pointless. At some point in my life ill probably relapse, and ill have to walk up this hill again. I wonder if it is better to just live and die with it. If i were to stop today. Id feel the urge to stop tomorrow. And then the shame of giving in to this tiresome habit.

Well you want to quit, If you have gone through all that before smoking weed I am sure you can do without it now. I'm not trying to offend you, I have been through a lot up until I was 23, smoking weed all the way. Life still was wild when I was 23, I was just more stable at that point. Eventually I was able to quit through creating my own home environment. I am sure you will be able to aswell, if you want. If I feel weak while quitting, I just say "when I am 70 I can smoke as much as I want " If you are unable to quit, many people have their own poisons. Just don't let it kill you, show restraint when possible.

05:29 🧠 Adolescence is marked by pubertal changes, emotional development, and social changes, including increased peer influence. 10:09 🏡 Conflict resolution in divorced families, not divorce itself, is crucial for mitigating risk-taking behavior in adolescents. 13:25 📱 Smartphones contribute to peer-to-peer interactions and the viral spread of behaviors, which can exacerbate risky behaviors like bullying and substance use. 19:11 💨 While conventional cigarette smoking rates have declined, there's been a dramatic increase in adolescent e-cigarette use, with rates peaking around 2017-2019 before decreasing slightly due to factors like COVID-19. 22:31 🚭 Schools are witnessing a significant increase in teenage vaping, with reports of 40 to 60% of students using e-cigarettes, nicotine, or cannabis within the last 30 days. 23:56 🧠 Nicotine, while known to enhance certain cognitive functions temporarily, is highly addictive and detrimental to health, particularly in the long term. 27:09 🚸 Elementary school students are also falling prey to vaping, with reports of second and third graders caught using nicotine e-cigarettes. 29:25 🍬 Flavors and marketing tactics are enticing teenagers to vape, with products designed to mimic sweets and candies, appealing directly to younger audiences. 32:38 💨 Unlike adults who may use e-cigarettes to quit smoking, teenagers are initiating nicotine use primarily through vaping, attracted by marketing, flavors, and ease of access. 36:50 📊 Salt-based nicotine in newer vaping products is smoother and more appealing to teenagers, potentially increasing addiction rates due to higher nicotine absorption. 39:36 🚬 Nicotine concentrations in vape pods can far exceed those in traditional cigarettes, leading to rapid addiction among teenagers, with some consuming nicotine equivalent to several packs of cigarettes daily. 43:00 🌅 Teenagers are becoming addicted to vaping nicotine, exhibiting signs of dependence within a few weeks of initiation, often using e-cigarettes immediately upon waking up as a sign of addiction. 45:20 💸 Teens find creative ways to obtain money for vaping, including sharing pods, selling puffs, or diverting lunch money. 49:05 🚭 Nicotine in vaping poses health risks, especially for brain development and lung function, impacting adolescents more severely. 52:42 🦠 Vaping chemicals like aldehydes, also used in laboratories, pose health risks including potential cancer and lung damage. 57:51 📣 Anti-vaping campaigns should emphasize social consequences and industry targeting to resonate with teens, rather than solely focusing on health risks. 01:07:29 🌿 Teens are increasingly using cannabis in e-cigarettes, either by purchasing cannabis-style e-cigarettes or by adding cannabis oil to nicotine e-cigarettes. 01:09:48 🧠 Adolescents using cannabis e-cigarettes may underestimate the health risks compared to nicotine e-cigarettes, but both pose concerns for addiction and brain development. 01:10:44 🧠 Scientists suggest a potential causal relationship between high-THC cannabis use in youth and the development of psychotic symptoms, particularly in late teens and early 20s. 01:17:03 💡 Quitting vaping and cannabis use is challenging for teens, with limited effective programs available, including nicotine replacement therapy and behavioral therapy. 01:19:08 💡 Teens may employ various strategies to manage withdrawal symptoms when quitting vaping, such as chewing gum, listening to music, or engaging in physical activities. 01:21:55 💬 Social withdrawal from vaping peers is crucial for teens attempting to quit, but creating alternative social networks and environments supportive of non-use is equally important. 01:26:31 💬 Peer pressure to vape can be intense, but there's a shift in attitudes where more teens are open to quitting or not starting, creating opportunities for supportive social networks. 01:29:03 🚭 Thirdhand exposure to e-cigarette aerosol can pose health risks to pets and children as it settles into carpets and clothes. 01:31:08 🎮 Replacement behaviors like concern for the environment could incentivize youth away from risky activities like vaping. 01:32:18 🧠 Social media may be reducing teens' engagement in after-school activities, potentially contributing to increased vaping and substance use. 01:36:29 🚗 Teens today are less likely to engage in drunk driving due to increased awareness and availability of ride-sharing services. 01:41:30 🚷 Impulsivity in teens can lead to risky behaviors, but life skills training programs aim to mitigate impulsive decision-making. 01:45:46 🌍 E-cigarette use varies among countries due to factors like marketing, regulations, and availability of nicotine products. 01:47:08 📈 Use of nicotine pouches like Zyn is on the rise among teens, potentially serving as a gateway to nicotine addiction. 01:50:06 ⚠ Concerns about oral cancer arise from the use of nicotine pouches, highlighting the need for further research into their health effects. 01:50:18 🧠 Nicotine, regardless of form, poses serious concerns for adolescent brain development. 01:51:12 💬 Usage of nicotine pouches among teens can escalate quickly, potentially leading to nicotine intake equivalent to multiple packs of cigarettes. 01:52:47 🚫 High levels of any neuromodulator, like nicotine, can adversely affect brain development, particularly in young individuals. 01:53:26 💡 Initiating conversations about risky behaviors with children at a young age helps normalize discussion and fosters healthier decision-making later on. 01:54:59 🗣 Open, honest conversations about substance use and risky behaviors are crucial for effective harm reduction, rather than solely relying on "just say no" approaches. 01:59:11 ⚖ Comprehensive education, including harm reduction strategies, is more effective than strictly advocating for abstinence, especially considering the reality of youth experimentation with drugs and risky behaviors. 02:02:35 🎓 Providing accurate, science-based information to teens helps empower them to make informed decisions about drug use and sexual health, reducing potential harm. 02:07:25 ⚠ While harm reduction tools like naloxone and fentanyl test strips can be beneficial, their presence may raise concerns about encouraging risky behavior, underscoring the complexity of addressing substance use issues. 02:09:54 📊 Further research is needed to understand the implications of fentanyl contamination in various drugs, highlighting the urgent need for comprehensive drug education and prevention efforts. 02:12:24 🛡 Teens are increasingly willing to say no to risky behaviors, join youth groups, and speak out about health concerns, indicating a positive shift in attitudes and behaviors. 02:13:04 💼 Concerns arise regarding the normalization of vaping and the proliferation of drugs among youth, posing significant risks to their health and well-being. 02:14:01 🤖 Initiating conversations about risky behaviors with teens, rather than turning a blind eye, is crucial for building trust and fostering healthier decision-making. 02:17:01 🛡 Encouraging open dialogue with teens and meeting them where they're at developmentally can help build trust and guide them toward healthier choices. 02:20:25 💼 Teenagers exhibit strengths such as creativity, passion, and concern for social justice, emphasizing the importance of involving them in discussions and solutions for societal issues. 02:21:49 🤖 Nicotine consumption during adolescence can alter brain wiring, increasing the likelihood of addiction and adverse mental health outcomes. 02:24:09 🛡 There's a bidirectional relationship between mental health issues and substance use among youth, highlighting the importance of addressing both aspects for effective prevention and intervention strategies.

As a nineteen year old myself I have tried many forms of nicotine including zyns, cigarettes, and of course vapes. Great content, a lot of interesting things to unpack. 1) Why is THC (medical uses, not addictive) listed under schedule 1, while nicotine (medical uses, highly addictive) isn't even listed on the Controlled Substances Act? 2) Why does FDA approve "nicotine-cessation" products and ignore how people get hooked in the first place? Basically, all legal products are designed to help addicts. 3) Dr. Huberman suggested nicotine vapes as a gateway drug to cannabis! 4) Dr. Bonnie indicated that nicotine vapes are actually "initiating consumers," which means these legal products are not designed for cessation or quitting. 5) All of the discussion focused on liquid vaporizers, but dry herb vaporizers are clinically approved in some countries (like Canada). Dry herb vaporization is safest option for THC.

Quitting vaping seems harder to me than quitting cigarettes. I think there are many reasons for this that don't apply to cigarettes, such as vaping not having the strong odors associated with cigarettes-it doesn't make your hands, breath, hair, clothes, and so on, smell like cigarettes do. I think these reasons are linked to the perception that smoking is unhealthy, while vaping is not. Additionally, it's more common to vape indoors without facing the same consequences as with cigarettes. I've decided to quit, and I did. Instead of being afraid of withdrawal, I now see it as a challenge, an opportunity for curiosity. Come on, let's see what you've got! I hate the fact that any substance can have such a strong hold on me that it becomes difficult to let go. Addiction, go find someone else to mess with-not me.

I am an architecture student who does weightlifting callisthenics boxing and many hobbies like art and graffiti and has a lot of deadlines. i smoke canabis since my late 14s and now that i am 24 years old i cant sleep without smoking cigarettes before bed . If i dont smoke withdrawls are so severe that i get a lot crazy. I am trying to change it by reducing it..i ve never took antidepressants before and the models and the psychoatrists in Greece have models or meds from the past. Would someone recomend to take an antidepresant even he continues to smoke or it might get things worse ?

Alcohol kills more people than all other recreational drugs combined, every year. Yet here we are talking about cannabis and vaping agian. This lady works for Marlboro. I've been vaping since it was new, it's the only way I've been able to stay off of smoking, and I've seen the industry killed by people like her that want people to go back to smoking cigarettes. Shame on her and shame on the idea that vaping isn't a valid harm reduction route.

The perspective that higher risk behavior is inherently negative needs explanation. Without risk seeking behavior we'd never sail the seven seas etc

I smoked weed semi regularly from age 14 to 23 or so - not sure how to quantify the amount or frequency because it was limited by having access to schwag (it was harder to find reliably back then) I started getting panic attacks - especially due to stimulants - around 2008 despite having quit thc for years prior to I often suspect that it had something to do with thc use in my youth - especially because that paranoia is something that slowly increased over the years of usage and if I smoke anything now it will lead to an extreme multi hour duration panic attack And that was the old Mexican dirt weed. I can’t imagine what the modern high THC stuff is going to people.

I recently got off Nicotine pouches Zyn, quitting it was one of the hardest things i had to do. It is not benign but very addictive and has negative health effects.

Had my first Marlboro between 10 and 11 years old. Kinda enjoyed it. Never became a heavy smoker and never was addicted. Don't smoke now. Lucky, I guess.

would be interesing to sometime talk about how to most harmlessly consume cannabis. like vaping pure cannabis or eating edibels and the effects on health.

I’m 28, I love science but can’t afford to go to uni as I’m single mom and only care giver, is there any way for me to get into biology as it’s my main passion and have a bright mind and urge for knowledge and studying. What can I do to make it my life?
