I teach high school health and PE. I take surveys of my students, more than 75% of teens at my school voted for vaping nicotine as being the biggest health related problem at our school. Followed by stress, anxiety, lack of sleep, and depression. They are incredibly addicted, and we should be offering more supports to quitting this nasty addiction, rather than simply punishing students. Many teens, who do want to quit, do not know where to get help or support in quitting, they are afraid to ask their parents, teachers, and adults in their lives. Most of my students report being introduced to vaping in middle school, not so much through peer pressure, but they try it because their friends are doing so, and they end up addicted in the process. I teach about the risks and dangers of vaping, and introduce them to quit lines/ websites for teens specifically, but more needs to be done on a larger scale to help the youth today with the vaping crisis. And yes we are seeing much lower physical activity levels, many students struggle with cardiovascular endurance, and even holding a 20-30 second plank. Im sure this is due to more factors beyond vaping, but vaping is playing a role.

💫Thank you both for this podcast. There are some chores around the house I do not enjoy. I have no motivation for these! I’m always procrastinating! The example of the professor saying I will pay you a $1 to say How much you enjoy doing a task/chore -go Pitch doing the task. (this is all paraphrasing I think to a another student do the pitch) I’m going to try this at home in my household with my partner! For me to try and step out of the negative mindset I’ve trapped myself in, regarding time spent on menial tasks. Very Interesting also “the musician, Who after a gig… Will go round helping The clean at the venue.” as part of his wind down routine before he heads home. Can I make a suggestion about sci-fi? write for fun! do it as a hobby, to be more appealing /no pressure. It’s absolutely amazing the amount of fantasy and knowledge that is in sci-fi, I listen to “ escape pod“ Fantastic short stories on sci-fi. The mixture of reality/ science & fantasy is astounding some of the stories blow my mind! (some people have whole other worlds inside their heads (are capable it seems of removing themselves from the reality we live in through the mind into other realms) Thought-provoking Magnificent portrayal of human imagination!!!

An idea from the movie Control Factor, brought to an incredible form. The whole reality around us is fake, it is programmed by someone, just like this "success" is programmed. It's not your success, it's all pre-written with the goal of thinking how good you are that you stopped doing something bad. In fact, you have ceased to be who you are. I have adhd too. I'm glad for it, I'm glad for my mistakes. I am happy to experience hardship and pain. I'm glad to be human, to be me. I would rather die than have this monstrous illusion forced upon me. I wish you all a pleasant PVC life.

I also love the long form information dense monologues. Thanks so much for everything you do.

So in the sleep protocol form Andrew is that to decrease adenosin levels we need to increase cortisol. How we hear only low metabolic activity in sleep can decrease adenosin. Any clarification?

This is a great topic. Actually I have a question about sleep. I hope you will read it. I am a cyclist and I have the following problem. I have hard time sleeping after a hard workout day on a bicycle. After a long intensive ride, like an interval training, my sleep may be so bad that I have nightmares while sleeping and headache the next day. On the second night my sleep is usually great and then I feel good. I observed this pattern since childhood, but now it gets worse with age. Is there anything I can do about it apart from stop cycling?

I have been trying to find out information about the impact of nicotine on sleep, and in particular nicotine ingested from vaping or nicotine pouches (not from smoking). Dr. Huberman or fellow listeners, please advise if Andrew has spoken about this or not. Maybe also an interesting topic to discuss with Dr. Matt 😊

1:56:00 - three cups a day? Are you sure ? Why is he not mentioning decaf if it's the bean that's healthy and not the caffeine? Really weird. And no interjection from Andrew? I've gone no caffeine for 5 weeks now (previously circa 10 cups a week) and I feel better. I do miss the taste, so am wondering if I go back to one morning cup or not. And if I can just go for decaf for health benefits.

Would be interested to hear about benefits of sleeping separate vs co-sleeping with a partner. My partner and I sleep separately and it is one of the best things we have done for our sleep quality. Understand some people are a bit sensitive around the idea perhaps due to perceived loss of intimacy but for us it's been a game changer.

so here are the points i learned from this video, 1.mindset is a way that we organize information we get 2.growth mindset is that understanding we can improve ourselves(explained as neuroplasticity) with effort and there is tools for that and the tools are i. Learning what growth mindset is ii. Learning to do error analysis iii. asking for help iv. teach someone about growth mindset and how good stress can enhance you as a person v. understand that mind not like a muscle(but closely similar) 3. ask yourself What are you good at and bad at? and what are you good or bad at them? you can view it in two ways 1. intelligence based view 2. effort based view so if you view it in intelligence based, the possibility of improvement become zero and when its a effort based view you can improve. and also the researches show that when kids are praiced intelligent based, they tends to choose easier problems and their performance decrease and also they try to fabricate there performance with lies to satisfy ego, in contrast to kids who are praised for their effort try to solve more harder questions and resulting improved performance without hiding the true marks when asked. 4. Core beliefs, are what you believe in deep down levels, and a survey in 1988(not sure exact year) showed that people believed that intelligence is fixed. but its not the truth 5. why did things happen it as i wrote in point 3? this is explained by a research which studied brain activity analyzed in two separate groups. group one has a fixed mindset and group two has a growth mindset, each student from the two groups are asked questions and their confidence of the answer. ( side note, there is a wave patterned called p3 and it is related to emotional levels and also something which blocks error analysis) so the fixed group when their are answered wrong, their p3 waves go higher and when growth mindset group when their answers are proven wrong their p3 waves do not rise much as compared to fixed group. this means group growth mindset tends to analize and figure out what went wrong 6. as a experiment done by a scientist called aria Crum, it is proven that when people are thought real scientific reasons how the stress can enhance performance people they tends to perform more in contrast to people who were thought real scientific reasons on the opposite. and this is not a placebo effect, they are thought real scientific reasons. 7. when you are in a growth mindset and you understand that good stress does enhance your performance you are open to improvement. thanks.... :D btw in case you wonder i used a mind palace technique to remember the points.

This podcast has changed my life - yes that old chestnut. Been trying to quit drinking for the past few years, generally drinking 25 units a week equivalent, with 2 to 3 pub sessions a month on top. So not a major alcoholic but enough for it to have me in its tentacles. I knew at the time it wasn’t doing me any good, really disrupting my sleep etc, and affecting my mood and my exercise and training. I practise Tai Chi and Kung Fu, so my relationship with alcohol was not helping in this area whatsoever. I listened to this podcast over 3 months ago and have not drank a drop since. Before this I kept giving into the craving, quitting is not easy in a society obsessed with alcohol! Each time I am tempted I remind myself that it actually didn’t relax me in the long run, it disrupts my sleep, cuts straight through my blood brain barrier, increases stress and anxiety, messes with my hormones, affects my training, etc etc, in fact I don’t find a single positive to drink it. It’s like I have your voice in my head keeping me on the straight and narrow. I think you must have hypnotised me. Note to self - be mindful of other podcasts you listen to. Thank you professor Huberman. Your service to science and humanity with your clear, informative and concise podcasts is second to none. Top man and top team you have supporting you. I salute you all ! 😊
