A very beautifully decorated console. The recording is not very clear and muddled so one really cannot hear it very well on computers and I have big speakers! I love the gaudiness of it. The lady "Carol" plays well.

Dr Carol is a real organist. She can play all organ music styles, This is very rare in a Classically trained organist. The other amazing organist is the late Carlo Curley - a great loss to the entire organ world.

+JON421000 jon, don't know how long you have been in the Sacramento area, but did you ever see and hear the big Theater organ at the old Carl Greer Hotel on Auburn and Fulton? it was there for years, but one night my car overheated and I turned off at Fulton and walked to the hotel to use the pay phone ( plus Auburn Blvd was not all that great then) and I asked the lady at the desk and she said they hadn't had the organ for some time. This was about 1991. As a kid in the 60's , I got to hear it several times, and even got a tour of the organ pit, that was about 30 ft deep off the kitchen behind where the organ was, with ladders going down. They had a bar then, that was around the organ and the restaurant was behind that, it was quite a place in the later 60's and early mid 70's
@JON4210008 жыл бұрын
Yes, I did, and my teacher, the late Clyde derby was the organist there. I was afforded opportunity to play it a couple of times, in the mid 70's. The organ is presently installed and playing in the Fox Theater in Stockton Ca. It's a Robert Morton, 4 manual, 16 rank instrument. John Carleton, Citrus heights, Ca.

Must have been an amazing performance. Too bad about the decision which was made that had such a negative impact on the audio quality. Would have loved to have been there.

I never knew there was a lift in that theater until seeing this video. Last I saw this organ, it was in a static position on stage. This theater is very unique in that the organ chambers don't speak from the sides like normal theaters do, this one speaks from the ceiling down so those seated closest to the stage get full benefit. In this video the sound was drowned out and bassy but that's not the way it sounds in person. Microphone placement in video was not ideal but that is a hard instrument to capture given it's unique layout. Remember unlike normal theaters where the balcony sounds best, here at Balboa you want to sit front and center stage area for best sound.
@BellVideo10 жыл бұрын
Yes, very true. We set up cameras on the balcony and captured the audio from there as well. A mistake for audio.

The Civic Theater/Auditorium organ in Berkeley has a similar arrangement and I believe the Alhambra Theater in San Francisco, back in the day, had a similar arrangement.

The curtains would not absorb any sound from the chambers, the only sound they would absorb is the return wave when the sound from the chambers bounces off the rear wall of the theatre, when I say rear, I mean the wall behind the audience.

I see Carol Williams performs with her shoes on. Is that usual? It would seem bare feet would have a more precise "feel" and would create less wear on the wood console. She's great. I love these majestic instruments.
@johne60817 жыл бұрын
Most organists wear application-specific shoes, often a tight fit.
@XY_Dude7 жыл бұрын
A true organist does not play the pedalboard without appropriate shoes. Very hard on the feet and ankles. Very bad practice. Beginners need unshoed feet.

The organ has some static wind or blower issues. You shouldn't hear it sag with full chords or a glissando even at full organ.

Nudity?! Are we a bit prudish?? It is gown; she likes dressing up and looking fashionable. Most of her gowns have revealing backs. I'd MUICH rather see that than the see-through, etc., stuff actors wear to red-carpet events, for sure. Very talented, and cool, lady.
@annnlonggg6 жыл бұрын
Also, a soloist is supposed to dress more conspicuously (compared to the rest of the orchestra, dressed uniformally in black)

Grunt 98311 how would opening the curtain give you a better sound. The organ chambers, the place where the sound comes from is not on stage, but in the auditorium high up on both sides of the proscenium. It is just a poor recording and does not reflect on the ability of the organist, or the organ.
@RedTriangle5311 жыл бұрын
the curtains would definitely absorb a lot of the sound that hit it, so it doesn't reflect back to the audience, but it was probably negligible in this case.
@grunt9844411 жыл бұрын
Too bad they didn't open the curtain, would have been a much better sound and performance

@julianadams57538 жыл бұрын
+Willem van Ingen I agree. I've often wondered why women performers seem to think that they have to almost strip to perform in public. Even classical musicians do this. It's just very inappropriate, I think, especially with all that's said about sexism these days. It certainly seems to be poor taste. If I want to see some flesh, I'll go to the beach. But at a concert I'd rather be presented with just music making.
@califdad48 жыл бұрын
+Julian Adams did you ever think about how hot it is up on stage with all those lights? It is a long formal dress kind of like a backless nice cocktail dress
@julianadams57538 жыл бұрын
It's hot for the men, too. Perhaps they should wear tank tops.
