Had this game as a kid. Never understood the mechanics and mainly just replayed the first couple rooms over and over. Thought the title screen was super creepy. Awesome to stumble on this play through and see what the game was actually about 30 years later.

Dr. Chaos is a janky but fun haunted house-style take on The Goonies II that comes across as an unlicensed adaptation of the movie House. I liked it👍

I played this very, very young, it was one of the first games my local rental store ever got when they started carrying games. Naturally I had no idea what this was about and couldn't get anywhere at all.

How did I not notice all the connections to House before? All the action stages are Nam flashbacks.

I never owned or played this growing up, but when I started getting into emulation in the late 90's, my brothers and I played this a lot for some reason. Never really understood what I was meant to do until later, then forgot about it for years until recently. Good choice for almost-Halloween.

I remember seeing an awesomely-illustrated ad for this in a Marvel comic book back in the day, and was always intrigued by it! Thanks for this playthrough.

Fantastic description of an under-rated game. I loved this as a youngling, but wasn't able to beat it until I went back to it as an adult. It certainly has some jank, but once you get used to it's feel, it's a nearly unique playthrough, though I also recognize many similarities between this and Goonies 2. The thing is I beat this one, but never Goonies 2 because I never thought to punch the same old man in the face 8 times to get a necessary item.

Wow, didn't expect to see point&click sections like in an adventure game of that time, or perhaps even before these came to be. Or perhaps like in so many looter-shooters of today.

Dr Chaos, man, what a blast from the past. I remember seeing this in a very early Nintendo Power and thinking it looked really cool because I was a sucker for games that blended genres and had different play styles even when I was young enough not to know what any of that meant. It's tempting to call this a ripoff of The Goonies II, but it was only released liks two months after it and really doesn't feel anything liks it once you actually get going. In retrospect, I'd say it's actually structured more like Super Mario 64. Not a great game, but a half remembered weird relic from my early childhood I was eager to revisit when my world was blessed with emulators.

Why do those "projectiles" from the lion at the end look like something that "adult"?

If you look closely at the mansion on the title screen, it even resembles the one from House. Look at the window placement and the overall structure of both and you’ll see quite a few similarities. Combine that with some of the enemies and the jungle setting in the warp zones and one must wonder if this started life as a game based off House. Considering all the other adaptations of horror movies that we got on the NES, I think it’s a possibility.

The FDS (JP) version is harder. When you open doors, cabinets or windows, there's a chance that a monster will appear. You got to kill the monster before you be able to search inside the rooms again.

This is a game that when I was 10 it was impossible, now it's really easy.

I love how AVGN is taking another crack out of Jeckle and Hyde for the NES, he was freaking out so much about that game 20 years ago but you made it look sooooo easy lol😂

It’s because he never knew how to spam the psycho attack and avoid standing where drjeckle fell in the other world otherwise the lightning strikes.

I never played the game nor own it either but I'd be a bit surprised if they did a remake of this classic... Seeing what the main character would look like and how to defeat the monsters as well

This game looks like a triple fusion between Resident Evil, Goonies II and TLOZ 2: The Adventure of Link. It has some similar gameplay mechanics from both of these three games... interesting!
