As a mental health patient since childhood I love Dr Charles. The character is very realistic except that not all psychiatrists are that compassionate or have that expertise. I’m lucky mine does.

I worked in a psychiatric hospital for nine years, and I completely agree. There are not enough compassionate, empathetic, caring doctors. I found that even a lot of nursing aides aren't either. You burn out from the constant heartbreak, and sometimes violence, that occurs, but that's when staff should step away and look for employment elsewhere. Once I realized I didn't care as much as I used to, I quit. It's not fair to other staff to make up for the difference, and it's not fair to the patients who need people who care about their well-being. I look back at that time as mostly fond, because of the joy patients felt when they could "breathe again". I'm so glad your care team is so compassionate!

@@samg873 ADHD meds don't always work for us, I stopped taking my meds when it made me extremely paranoid to the point of checking behing doors and putting my hoodie on. I picked my arms raw and they got infected bc of the compulsive issues it gave me. And anger is hard to control wether you have pills or not.

I've seen this before. My brother was the same way. He was extremely violent until he was taken off of medication after being misdiagnosed with ADD. He's now a very successful teacher and has created new teaching programs for English Language in Japan.

Im not trying 2 sound rude Im just confused do you mean he was misdiagnosed with adhd because ADD just means you have a problem with being focused on things I have ADD and there is nothing that can be done about it you just have 2 cope with it maybe in extreme cases there is things that can be done with it but I never heard of anything sometimes a task can take me an hour or more in order 2 complete because I get distracted easily I have 2 have someone nudge me 2 get me back on track sometimes

@@SamNicholson1214 Giving ADD meds to someone who doesn't have ADD can have some ugly side effects. People with ADD *can* be effectively treated with medication. ADHD is just ADD with physical hyperactivity added on. They're both treated with the same medications.

i have a kiddo i teach swim lessons to that is just like me (severe adhd) and he adores me because i actually take the time to explain to him and understand his adhd feelings. i’m one of the first adults he’s ever met to care about him and show him that level of understanding. i remember all the adults that helped me as a kid, so i hope he remembers me when he is older too

I am a DSW (developmental service worker) and I was diagnosed with ADD and i know that there are medical benefits to using aderol and Ritalin they do work but Dr's are to quick to prescribe it I personally believe that a full psych work up is needed before they push the pills

@@mg7094 definitely, meds can only do so much, without anyone teaching you how to pay attention you're just gonna fall back into those same thought patterns and coping mechanisms that usually protect you from getting exhausted or overwhelmed but don't really help you deal with the world in the long run. A supportive environment and stable schedules are also really helpful.

Thank you for pointing out that ADHD is being overdiagnosed and over treated. Those drugs are very dangerous to children who do not have ADHD and people don't listen when they tell them the drugs make them feel bad. Thank you for pointing that out.

Recently, my cousin was diagnosed with ADHD and my aunt told me that the doctor was very adament about starting in smaller doses because too much too quickly can change brain chemistry if the kid doesn't have ADHD. Most of the time, a good doctor can tell, but for those who can't, it's better to be safe than sorry. Sadly, lots of kids are being misdiagnosed. I blame it on the parents and their unwillingness to try behavioral options.

@@becca2938 yes. My cousin unfortunately was forced on meds and had years of her teenagehood where she was in such a dark place. Family didn’t think she would live past 18. Fighting everyday with my grandma, hanging with the wrong crowd. Then she stopped taking the medication on her own and got so much better (my grandma didn’t know about the meds being harmful. She wasn’t born here and just trusted the doctors when they told her my cousin needed ADHD meds). I’m so proud of my cousin for breaking out on her own. She’s doing so much bigger now. I didn’t know this was such a big issue though. It’s awful

when I was younger my parents and teacher noticed something different with how I behaved my teacher thought i might have the likes of autism or something so my parents got me checked out I was diagnosed with adhd and was given medicine but it never worked. The first dosage made me chew my fingers and lip bloody the next caused me to not think clearly I could only say yes or no even though I had little to no clue what was going at 16 I was diagnosed with autism. My parents say the doctor that diagnosed me didn't even run tests just the moment i spoke saying what my name was and saying this is my and this is my dad he said she doesn't have autism. That with everything and trying for so long to find out what I have was a pain. but I'm homeschooled now and it's gotten better.

it's sad because some kids are misdiagnosed and put on meds they don't need and others are misdiagnosed or have parents who don't listen to the doctors and don't get the meds they need. one of my cousins has adhd and his pediatricians wanted to put him on meds. his mom said he didn't need meds and thought she could beat the adhd out of him. it's devastating seeing a child be beat for something he literally couldn't control.

Just a note that you can't stop Adderall suddenly. The dosage needs to be slowly reduced over time. I legit have ADHD in my meds help me function but it's not the right choice for everybody even those who do have ADHD. Everyone needs to do what's best for themselves or their own kids.

My older brother had anger management issues too when he was younger. No everything needs a diagnosis. Sometimes you just need to work through things, find a healthy way of dealing with them, realise where they come from. In hindsight, the amount of times mx brother was told or my mum was told about him that he had problems, was crazy, and I don't know what, did nothing good. On the contrary, imagine how insecure he must have felt! "I feel this way, and people look at me like I'm crazy, nobody understands me, nobody tries to see my side." He could have used a Dr. Charles! I actually don't know what it was that improved things in the end. Growing up and maturing probably did its part, his girlfriend, now wife, probably helped as well. Having faith and knowing someone is looking out for you. I am so proud of the guy he has become, meanwhile I'm still looping with the same issues as five years ago, no improvement.

There are so many things to address in my life from massive character flaws to ridiculous forced behaviours like never going to bed before 1 am even though I know it would improve everything - it's hard to know where to start sometimes. And even if I focus on one thing, I can never celebrate any successes at all. It just doesn't work and I go to bed unhappy with myself. Well, it's easy to hate oneself for one's flaws and issues, it's tough to get up again and again and try for the millionth time.

I don’t know why… but I thought it was beautiful and touching when the father just gave Dr Charles the bottle of meds. Maybe it’s cause while some parents cling to any possible explanation for their child’s ailments rather then face the blinding and frightening uncertainty, he saw the real harm it was causing and didn’t even hesitate to let go of the only answer they were ever given. He’s a good father. A very very good father. He’s willing to learn, accept hard truths, face uncertainty, and adapt for his kids.

I have adhd, but back in the day there was no name for it. I was put on medication and wow! It helped me so very much, I remember going into the therapist office and walking around, opening drawers, taking down books, looking on shelves, hearing the cars outside driving on the road, hearing the people walking down the hall, hearing the clock ticking on the wall, seeing the flicker of the lights all while trying to sit down in the chair (I just could not sit still) and talk to the therapist. Once I started the medication, I could filter out most everything that was distracting me and I was able to focus and sit in the chair and talk to the therapist. I do understand that there are so many misdiagnosed with adhd today, but there are those who truly have adhd and medication can and does help them. For those who are misdiagnosed, that medication backfires.

When I was a kid, I was put on a couple meds for my ADHD coupled with my autism, but they only worked for so long until it got me to the point I wasn’t myself, so I got off of it. I’m in a much better position today than I was 12 years ago. I think Dr. Charles was awesome for how he calmed that kid down.

I have adhd, but luckily never really needed to take meds for it, but before when I lived with my younger brothers, turns out he had it aswell, to a much higher level... led to him getting violent, which led to me getting violent... turns out toxic households where no one notices we need help does that. We're all doing better now, he is getting help but, man, if we had a doctor like Charles... life would have been just a bit easier for us.

Imagine seeing a kid who gets angry and instead of trying "maybe talk to him" they're like "oh ADHD give him meds". But unfortunately for every good doctor you have 10 bad, lazy doctors who just want to get their paycheck and go home to binge drink or whatever. Considering hospitals are the make or break of life and death, your last defense to survive, they really don't care. Makes you wish they got a seriously painful illness and their own peers give the same service they give everyone else. Let's see how you feel when your broken toe gets diagnosed as depression, my mother would be pleased to hear that slice of karma.

I think that a lot of kids, adults too, are over medicated. But, I think it's risky to suggest that just quitting psych meds - cold turkey- is going to make things all better. Popular TV shows have a huge influence on their viewers and making suggestions like this can be dangerous..

In theory what dr Charles said is correct. And I guess he could say it cause he knew the parents. But in reality it’s not always like that. I was a troubled kid for a number of reasons and once when I tried to open up to my father about the way I was feeling, after he asked, I was literally told “do u think it’s worth being angry about that?” Really?!?! Maybe not to u but it clearly was to me. If u didn’t want to know or just wanted to condemn me then don’t ask. I never shared my feelings or thoughts w him ever again.

Me and my sister have ADD and ADHD and when we were kids in the early 90’s yeah, if the doc didn’t know what to do for a mental illness for a child “adderall” and whatever those blue pills where were thrown at at our throats..helped my sister..not so much me..but apparently I also had GAD (generalized anxiety disorder) so they thought I was just always acting out

I feel like you cant just give the meds back to the doctor and go cold turkey with em. Wouldn’t the doctor have to start weaning you off of it?

You can stop adhd meds and be fine. They’re not like ssris. It would be more like a caffeine withdrawal. If you don’t need them it’s like drinking a lot of coffee. If you need them they calm your mind.

Yes. But I think it was more symbolic. It was more like the father was recognizing he was wrong. That his kid didn't need the meds.

Yes and no. Adderall is a stimulant, so it should absolutely be fine with going cold turkey for, heavier psychoactive or anti-depressant drugs are what you need to wean off of though, because your brain starts to need them to function, so it would be better to get your brain used to not having it in small doses instead, otherwise your brain will lash out in protest and cause some really bad withdrawal symptoms.
