After nearly a 1 year hiatus from posting, we have teamed up with Dr. Sugrue's colleague and long-time friend Darren Staloff. These lectures are from the same "Great Minds" series produced by The Teaching Company and are delivered by an equally learned lecturer. We hope you will enjoy, and thank you to Dr. Staloff for joining us on this channel.
This is the official KZbin channel of Dr. Michael Sugrue.
Please consider subscribing to be notified of future videos, as we upload Dr. Sugrue's vast archive of lectures.
Dr. Michael Sugrue earned his BA at the University of Chicago and PhD at Columbia University.

The Teaching Company upgraded its audiovisual equipment as time passed. But they never reached the same level of teaching that we had with Dr. Segrue and Staloff. How could they? This was the first courses I bought 30+ years ago. It’s still one of my favorites. It’s amazing to watch Segrue lecture with no notes. A true intellectual and teacher’s teacher. Thanks for posting this with Staloff. Equally superb.

I've always loved Dr. Sugrue's course on Plato (part of that course can be found on this channel), from the Great Courses many years ago, and have enjoyed watching these lectures that he has released on this channel. If he is now going to team up with Dr. Staloff I am looking forward to seeing another group of lectures I've never seen before. I've seen Dr. Staloff in a few lectures from the Great Courses and he is an excellent educator, as is Dr. Sugrue's. They make a great team. Thanks for bringing your knowledge to us. If there is any way of releasing the entire course on Plato that Dr. Sugrue gave on the teaching company I know it will give people an opportunity to fall in love with the works of Plato. It is my favorite course of all time!

Wow. I find myself transported back to when I would find two words stuck together like "charismatic authority" and wanting to spend all day contemplating ie; writing about that. Brother Cornell West once made a call for his black brethren to join together behind the charismatic authority of Jesus Christ. I as a white atheist feel good about calling him brother and think this call stands for the true good of Christianity.

Great lecture, my seventh full play, maybe. A comparative lecture about Confucius would illuminate the western-eastern approaches to authority and bureaucratic structures. China in my opinion is CCCC or Confucian-Communist-Capitalist-China. In the west we are more Confused than Confucians.

Does anyone know of a way to write an email or letter to Dr. Sugrue? I started watching this channel a few months ago enjoying the 'Great Minds' lectures as a way to stimulate my mind a little bit through out the day. Recently I started watching the 'The Bible and Western Culture' lectures and now have an even deeper appreciation for Dr. Sugrue's balanced and almost seemingly unbiased viewpoints (which almost seems hard to believe). I don't want to engage in any discussion because I think his lectures are extraordinarily engaging enough haha but simply thank him for publishing these lectures on KZbin because they are so deep and so well thought through while simultaneously true to the point.

If I may, I would like to offer one small piece of criticism. Content like this only seems timeless at the time. Though the delivery may be as well-executed as is possible, after enough time has passed, new ways of seeing the world end up forcing it into the context of its period. As such, for the sake of its remaining a solid informational resource, it would be prudent to add the date of the recording to the video's description. Great content. Thanks.

I'm a sociology undergrad in my final year, and, saying this apolitically, I'm a little bummed weber is so underrepresented in my contemporary social theory class. I had to read the communist manifesto (Marx), articles on cultural hegemony (Gramsci), Anarchy/Anarcho-syndicalism (Chomsky/Goldman), and Intersectionality (Davis). Want to know the real joke? My program is called 'critical' sociology. In what way is only having marxist-conflict theorists in the curriculum for, not just this course, but a majority of sociology classes where theory gets talked about, an education on critical thinking ('theorizing')? and how the hell are the only good sociology lectures on youtube
@pocket83squared
@pocket83squared 2 жыл бұрын
It does seem odd that he's been displaced, but consider the following perspective. Not to bubble-burst, but I'll remind you that you're there for a stamp of legitimacy. Given the vast nature of the topic, every curriculum is going to be inherently limited. In mass media, the problem becomes one of framing, which is to ask: _which parts will together convey, or at least suggest, the complete story?_ To any journalist with concern, it's a conundrum. Thus, the onus rests on the individual to develop her more complete, and/or conceptual, understanding. From the standpoint of personal discovery, the insight gained from a college experience can be a real let-down. It seems so romantic at first-so enlightening-until the disillusion starts to set in with the realization that we've purchased a high-demand and therefore overpriced consumer product. Ironically, this tragedy itself can become its own unique part of one's development. I mean, seriously, let's do think critically: how can we expect _anything_ to confer upon us critical thinking skill? Discussions of Positive & Negative Liberty (and freewill) notwithstanding, the responsibility remains totally, necessarily ours; we're stuck in our own heads. As for Weber: maybe the lack of mention came as a result of those more contemporary, fancy-pants theorists who're always pushing back the out-of-vogue, often slightly coarse, classics. You know, loss of forest for the trees. My own first exposure was during a philosophy/sociology crossover course, so you might want to poke around in some of the more philosophical hallways if you're still interested. The guy was/is a major player, so one of your local professors _should_ still be fixated on him. This assuming you still have an open spot left in your last year. Good luck.

Weber is underrepresented in sociology, similarly Bourdieu and Chomsky. The Frankfurt Sociologists were Neo-Weberian. Look at Habermas' 1981 "Theory of Communicative Action" where Weber and Parsons are discussed in detail. Where Marx addresses economics, Weber addresses politics, especially authority. Authority is a key idea in Organizational Psychology, especially at the Rice Institute.
