Have been hopelessly addicted to prescription opiates since 1999. Literally, need them to get up in the morning, to fall asleep at night, and all times in between. They have consumed 100 percent of my life. Would love to break this endless cycle of finding drugs, buying drugs and finding ways to come up with the money to buy drugs, just to feed this fatal addiction. Unfortunately though, i'm nowhere near wealthy or a celebrity, unlike the people Dr. Drew treats. Obamacare just simply will not pay for the insanely expensive treatment centers that are out there. My situation is enevitably headed for a major trainwreck and it seems that nothing to prevent that from happening is coming sooner rather than later. Money and the fame of being a celebrity always gets those people anything they want or need. The rest of us are pretty much on our own, sad, but unfortunately true the united states

Dr. Drew is so humble, a trait missing in most people. I love it!! Dr. Drew says: "I try, I try". Oh, come on. You're a wonderful help to so many. But, really, I am so happy he doesn't have, nor does he seem to want to get, a big head. There's something special about this guy, and it's almost too good to be true--though I believe it's for real. I have an addictive personality, basically asperger phenotype (or just mentally gifted, but definite ASD symptoms), and one adaptive trait is that I can sit 16 hours a day 7 days a week doing software engineering because I love it so much. A word I often utilize as part of this is tunnelvision. Over the years, I have come to learn about my phenotype category by studying it and pursuing knowledge, but I have had issues with psychoactive substances before. I can relate to a lot of what Dr. Drew is saying around 24:26. After long enough I came to understand that I must simply choose against ingesting even 1 unit of a problematic thing. My thoughts are kind of all over the place here, but my key point is that it's obvious to me that I could either be a functioning addict of some sort or I could be spectacularly incredible in another way. In this way, these genetic traits I have are a blessing or a curse. It was incredibly important in my life for me to study the advantages and disadvantages of "people like me". To me, tunnel vision in programming is no different than chasing the dragon with heroin. With the difference being that if I harness the addictive power towards making money by creating apps, I have a profound advantage against those that do not code 16 hours a day. Case in point.

@21:28 after a year of Al Anon meetings and work on myself, Drew says something here that I like and probably wouldn't have thought twice about had it not been for my own therapy. He talks about how the addict CANNOT deal with the root/core areas of emotional work needed UNTIL the addiction (physical) part is healed, "trauma can't really be treated until the addiction is well in hand" -- it's a long process for sure. "Changing the wiring of the brain...and it wires very slowly" -- Dr. Drew

Thank you, Lewis, for sharing about your own childhood abuse issues. It is epidemic and has probably always been with us. The toxic shame created is a horrible "infection" within the psyche that requires long-term commitment, care, and therapy. Dr. Drew is a powerful voice for addressing the ways people can recover; and yes, we do recover....

Lewis Howes, thank you for interviewing Dr.Drew and posting it. I was diagnosed with PTSD (Post traumatic stress disorder) when I was 17 in 2002. As I listen to Dr. Drew I'm understanding more of why my childhood traumas led to me having PTSD. I had three open heart surgeries all before the age of five. So the first five years of my life I was in and out of the ICU. Anyway, it makes sense now why I get anxious easily and jump when I hear loud noises. I would do exactly what Dr.Drew was talking about, I would say 'the trauma I had was in the past. I'm fine now, it's a distant memory for me' but like he said it still affects you even when you blocked (or try to block) that memory out. I would even discredit what I have been through as 'no big deal'
@maryhughes63727 жыл бұрын
And to this day I have a hard time considering it as trauma. I, like you, hate it when people feel sorry for me. My immediate reaction when it happens is I say 'stop it, it's seriously no big deal.'

Excellent talk and i really enjoy your aura lewis, it's gentle. On the subject of addiction if any one else is wondering just to add to the words in which the dr. drew so eloquently mentioned, personally i think addiction is also linked to identity. Let me explain, so as we grow with our addiction (failing to even notice it in some cases) - it transmogrifies until we reach the point of self-hate we believe the addiction to be us we are identified with it. Now the funny thing is, it is the addiction and the corresponding behaviour that we hate yet we get angry at our 'self' why? Well then comes the story 'I am this...I am that...' . As i arrive at the point and to paraphrase dr drew, something may have happened maybe in childhood...your brain wants you to survive so we find something which counters those feelings of trauma bam addiction occurs and we smoke when we are overwhelmed, we eat a lot of junk , etc in our attempts to feel good -often putting us at further detriment. Once we realise that this addiction is not the true us and purely a learned behaviour we can start to form some distance between the addictive behaviour and ourselves. Secondly once we realise that what has happened to us was a result of what someone or something did i.e stressful situations causing me to take drugs, trauma in childhood we can see more evidence of this addiction not being of our own nature. Lastly the true self (and this is purely my interpretation and will probably change over time) is beyond any addiction, any need or want , it captures the feeling we have when our mind is still such as listening to our favourite piece of music etc. if we connect more with this 'self' i hope it can allow us to move closer into seeing the truth about our addictions/habits and then present us with the courage such as Lewis had to be able to mention the trauma causing the addiction, thus taking responsibility (not blame or admitting it to be your fault which is different not true) and being on the road to overcoming.
