In this video, I discuss anxiety and worry. Although these are common symptoms in life, excessive worry is not. Worry is like blood pressure: you need a certain level to live, but too high a level can hurt you. When worry becomes toxic, it ceases to serve as the useful built-in alarm system nature meant it to be and becomes instead a painful problem in itself. As a car alarm system that won't shut off, our human alarm system can drive its owner crazy - and get him or her into trouble - when it won't silence itself. In order to set fear far enough aside for us to be able to act creatively and boldly, we need to find a method, other than denial, for doing so. So what do we do? What is a reliable method for controlling toxic worry? The non-medication approach outlined in this video is something we can all use. Learn more @ www.drhallowell.com

Anxiety and depression are how I got my diagnosis. I had impending doom and went to my doctor. She said hey, you have ADHD, and anxiety stems from it. Yep. She was right 😂

Thank you fir sharing that I work from home and rarely interact with people. It’s no wonder my anxiety got worse when I started working from home. I will make more of an effort to connect. 🙏🏾

Hi Dr. Hallowell- I worked with you many, many years ago at Mass Mental Health Center- I was part of the social work team as a BSW. I enjoyed this video and have to say I greatly liked the aspect of connecting with others- sometimes I think we are forgetting the importance of relationships.

after about 10 years of therapy and improvement because of it, we finally realized that there was something clinical going on, and now I am pretty much on meds for the rest of my life

I believe i have one of the books you wrote? I read a book during my first depressive episode. It really helped me out a lot. The book was titled "Worry" (if I have you confused with someone else, I apologise.) I've been diagnosed with MDD and an anxiety disorder nos. I'm coming out of my 4th episode. I'm actually doing better with a medication adjustment. I get severe depression and I can be dangerous to myself at times. The medication helps me so that I can go through therapy more effectively. Medications aren't all bad. My symptoms can be worse than the symptoms.

Family Dr put me on Cipralex and then Abilify to get me to my appt with a psychiatrist. I dont know what I'd do if I wasnt on them. I think the root cause has always been ADHD

What if the prognosis of an illness is disagreed upon by several doctors, and hope is always mediated by this uncertainty ? And what if there are simply not many people available to talk to in fact in a given environment ( I went to a different country, Holland) ?

Dear Mr.Hallowell, I've been watching your and Dr.Russel Barkely's videos for more than a year now :) I was wondering if you could recommend a good ADHD doctor in India, specifically New Delhi? My current 'therapist' has me on prodep 20, for the depression and anxiety, although I feel that never explains my addiction to Coke, laser like focus when I'm doing something I love, or the difficulties I face at college which seem to be unique to me. I would greatly value your suggestions 😊 lots of love ❤️

I'm afraid I do not know of a doctor in India to refer you to. However, you can learn a lot by reading my book, Delivered from Distraction, which you can get from amazon. I don't know when prodep 20 is. However, your addiction to Coke (I assume you mean Coca-Cola) suggests you are self-medicating with caffeine, which is a stimulant, similar to the stimulants we use here in the USA to treat ADHD. Both caffeine and stimulant medication help focus the mind. Doing something you love also serves to focus the mind. This state is sometimes called "flow". In the state of flow a person can forget where she is, what day it is, even if she is hungry or not, as hours can pass unnoticed and she becomes one with whatever activity she is engaged in. This hyperfocused state is associated with peak performance an intense pleasure. That's what people should chose as a career doing what they love to do if they possibly can. Given your story, your unique challenges in school are probably not unique, but rather those of a person who has ADHD. You can learn a lot by reading Delivered from Distraction. Feel free to contact me with any more questions.

Enlightened me sent me from periscope With due respect i disagree that fear is good for you period. I believe you could confuse your patients teaching them worry ( fear ) is good. I believe you are not in denial if you don't worry (worry is fear and people are tormented by worry ) in a spilt second You can discern the situation and remove a problem without ever going into worry or you can remove your self from problem. When you panic worry (fear) your front lobe can help you make wrong choice because fear effects your sound mind. If you keep calm and use fight or flight and act accordingly that is not worry and will get you out of trouble without using fear. That is not denial I have not arrived yet and it is a slow process for me to renew my mind from this common teaching. I personally am thousand times improvment from the above teaching rather than to embrace worry as a friend. look forward to your feed back kind regards roy
