For people who are curious, the patient did end up dying later on in the season. The charges against him were dropped because the husband was thankful that his wife didn’t die that day, and he got more time with her. However, even after the charges were dropped, the doctor couldn’t get good Malpractice insurance because *cough* *cough* he does a lot of malpractice, and is deep in debt! :3

this scene was so wrong. He wasn't trying to save her, he was superimposing his mother onto this patient and denied her wishes and a legally binding order. it must have been difficult for the patient to reach the decision she did and to have that disrespected by some doctor who thinks he knows better. even after revival he cant force her to take the trial drugit didn't even matter in the end she died anyway

There comes a point when a life is no longer worth living. Tbh as much as this is a drama if this happened in real life that doctor would have his medical license revoked and most likely spend time in prison. Remember people this is not real life! No doctors would do this, when she died it would have ended there.

No, of cause this isn't real life. In real life people are not idealists. Sadly. The world would be a better place if more folks had the guts to stand up for what they believe in. Though I doubt that even as young as I am I will see this day, the moral idea behind this scene is interesting. If you swear an oath to safe lives and then a patient wants to die - shouldn't this patient have went someplace else? Is it worth to die for the peace of your loved ones? Was the doctor right or wrong? I can't answer those questions. But we all thought about them because of this episode. I think that is a success.

@UCuBelNmMwRWry1YpqYJBoFg 1. It’s because your teacher has a different theology. Theology doesn’t differ between countries. 2. You may be thinking of euthanasia. Most, if not all Christians are fine with DNR orders. Some may even have DNR orders themselves. This is because we believe that God has the sole right and power to both create and end life. No one is ending a life in a DNR situation. One is simply just accepting that their time has come and the doctors are respecting their decision. Euthanasia is different. That is when someone with a terminal illness makes the decision to end their life before they die of natural causes, usually because of the physical pain and suffering they are going through. Therefore a doctor would assist them in ending their life. A lot of Christians are opposed to this because it is the act of ending a life unnaturally. Therefore it seen by many Christians to be murder and playing God because taking a life is seen as desecrating the sanctity of life and violating God’s sole right as the giver of life.

This doctor is not thinking logically. DNR exists for a reason- Will of a patient. By doing this , the idiot will only serve to lose his license and in that many many other lives he could have saved. As a doctor, emotions have NO role in our job. Before u guys say crap- u will understand when u are a doctor or that it's hard, I am a doctor so I know that legal bindings to our job make it very important even when doing something which may be conventionally wrong. I never understood why doctors came up with CPR? It's unnatural and cruel to chose a patients' suffering just to prolong his/her life rather than let them pass away peacefully and with dignity? Doctors watch death each and every day and know the horrible results of CPR on a patient yet they do CPR every time a heart goes into arrest. My uncle landed in vegetative state due to his hypoxia injury which all happened because he was resuscitated. I have began to hate the concept of CPR since then. When it's time to go, it's time to go. Body doesn't die without a cause or fight. If the heart has stopped that means it's tired and can no longer work efficiently. It's time for it to retire and for the person to move on. Why do we living people only think of our selfish needs? It wasn't as difficult to take care of my uncle as it was to know that the person we knew and loved no longer existed in that body and he continued to suffer for no reason or fault of his.

if theres anyone watching this show that wants to be a doctor or is currently in med school, DONT DO THIS. if a patient refuses to be treated, you must respect their wishes, even if it means death. if they are lucid, they are able to make decisions for themselves. as long as you lay out their options and they know the consequences for refusing treatment, you arent doing anything wrong. because if you dont respect their wishes, theres a pretty huge chance that youll end up in jail.

@Speaking Truth No, he swore an oath: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osteopathic_Oath "I do hereby affirm my loyalty to the profession I am about to enter. I will be mindful always of my great responsibility to preserve the health and the life of my patients, to retain their confidence and respect both as a physician and a friend who will guard their secrets with scrupulous honor and fidelity, to perform faithfully my professional duties, to employ only those recognized methods of treatment consistent with good judgment and with my skill and ability, keeping in mind always nature's laws and the body's inherent capacity for recovery. I will be ever vigilant in aiding in the general welfare of the community, sustaining its laws and institutions, not engaging in those practices which will in any way bring shame or discredit upon myself or my profession. I will give no drugs for deadly purposes to any person, though it be asked of me. I will endeavor to work in accord with my colleagues in a spirit of progressive cooperation and never by word or by act cast imputations upon them or their rightful practices. I will look with respect and esteem upon all those who have taught me my art. To my college I will be loyal and strive always for its best interests and for the interests of the students who will come after me. I will be ever alert to further the application of basic biologic truths to the healing arts and to develop the principles of osteopathy which were first enunciated by Andrew Taylor Still." He made a judgment which he deemed to be in the best interest of all involved. His character firmly believed that the new treatment could work and that by letting her die he would disobey everything he stands for. Now, having watched the episode or just by knowing the legal background of this case, like everyone in the world you are free to judge this case. But next time, do it more analytical. He was not selfish, he could have been right. In his eyes, again; he was doing the best he could to preserve the life of a mother, to obey his oath and to follow what he stands for. There is nothing selfish about that. He didn't do it for his own glory or because he wanted to prove a point, he did it because at this deciding moment he was certain that he would have made a terrible mistake due to a patient who wished to take the easy way out because she had lost all hope. If he would have succeeded in the end, how would we judge him? He failed but he stood up for the profession he works in. To safe life's. Not to watch his patients die if there still is a possibility to save them.

It might seem ironic but DNRs are not simply about choosing whether or not to prolong life, but they're also about dying with dignity! Resuscitation is actually quite a violent and potentially traumatic experience for both the patient and their families with all the staff rushing into the room, the chest compressions, tubing, etc. Many resuscitation attempts are also unsuccessful, especially if the patient is very sick. Imagine if the family's last memory of a loved one is an aggressive and invasive one ... it may be worth it in a young healthy person but in cases like this I believe dying peacefully in the presence of loved ones would have been one of the factors the patient considered before deciding for DNR.

You do not EVER do this. Halstead violated this patient's consent and choice of life and basically decided that he was God, and he could decide when she lived or died. If that wasn't bad enough, he re-traumatized the husband by asking him (while his child is screaming) whether or not he wants his wife to be alive as she is dying! Halstead claims to want to save lives, but completely ignored the patient's dignity, freedom of choice, and consent. He also completely disregarded the fact that his entire team, including a fellow doctor, were telling him "NO". Halstead deserved to be suspended at the very least, if not have his license pulled. This was about HIS agenda and HIS will, not the patient's. Despicable.

In this case law. If the patient didn't have the capability of sound mind to say yes or no, then the doctors are fully in the right to try and save her life, but in this case a patient of sound mind has made her decision and withdrawn consent to be resuscitated. Life is incredibly important, there's no doubt, but when someone is mentally fit to decide that if their body degrades enough that they don't want to be revived, you would be bringing them back into a life they don't want against their wishes.

Yes. She’s gonna likely die soon anyway. Another 2 months of her in constant pain is not gonna be worth it. It’s her choice and she wouldn’t of made it lightly so she should be allowed to die.
