Well, I'd say all these psychological problems PhD students suffer from would be solved if supervisors were a bit more responsible or at least carried out half of their responsibilities, as someone who is supposed to 'supervise' a student. My supervisor doesn't even know what I'm working on, so I'd say there is an underlying problem with the way most PhD students are supervised these days. Most supervisors only care about their own studies and that's because they too are under a lot of strain in the 'publish or perish' industry of academia.
