Interesting, a documentary made by Werner Herzog showed an interview with a trapper who uses dogs in Siberia. To prevent his dog from getting caught in their traps, and not meddling with the traps in other ways, he sets the dog up for failure. He would set a trap (which works by a log falling onto small mammalian prey), fill it with meat, remove enough weight so that the trap will merely make the dog very uncomfortable and give it a right scare, and then waits. The dog trips the trap, gets caught in it, and learns that meddling with traps is a bad experience waiting to happen.
