Not really, Garang was not for separation, he was for the unity of the Sudanese people with nationality (Sudanese common identity) as the uniting factor, not religion or ethnicity but the fanatically religious north wouldn't hear of it. Therefore, he would have been forced by the fanatically religious Northern government to eventually encourage and support separation at long last.
