1968 very late at night. Very stoned on weed and reds starting to kick in. Allison Steele the Nightbird on WNEW fm in NY played this song. A 8 minute masterpiece. No imitators. Played this in RVN as an alternative Cloud Nine

Went on a Riverboat trip one night in NOLa...Rush week 1970. Dr. John was the featured music. A truly night tripping experience.

A great and incrediibly unusual song that began a career that saw Dr. John become the greatest pianist I ever heard - Blues, Boogie Woogie, Jazz, Rock, and that great New Orleans sound. They loved him in his home town of N.O. What a send off they gave him at his funeral. RIP Mac

I especially love this song because many of the "Swamp Jambands" I tend to like nowadays (yes I made up a genre), like Widespread Panic, Government Mule, Allman Bro's, Marcus King, SoulLive, Anders Osborne, etc - all cover this song, & they all have their own unique interpretations. The best is when these bands are in the midst of a heavy dark swampy psychedelic jam & the riffs for Guilded Splinters start getting mixed into the jam, then they gradually transition into it. I'm usually the 1st one to hear the faint hints that then keep getting more obvious. Usually everyone around me is busy loudly talking about bass fishing on Long Island Sound cause, you know, Bud Lite Tall Boys don't go well with deep dark swampy psychedelic jam sessions . . .;)

@@gaylinnek388 I saw and heard Dr John perform this tune in full regalia with ensemble at the Whiskey Au Go Go on Sunset Strip in September of 1969. Spectacular is a fine word to describe that show, although it transcended spectacle, and the simultaneous scene of what was going on throughout the venue was a profound setting for the stunning musical show on the stage, making the entire package spectacularly spectacular!

@@chetlund4465 you mean on user submitted lyrics sites? I have and i did once again and it proves us both to be correct. However i think i remember reading the Ti Alberta explanation in the Dr. John autobiography "Under a Hoodoo Moon", which give me the inclination that "till i burn up" is the misheard lyric, which is understandble considering Dr. John and his dialect.
