She's the first one on your show to take responsibility for this kind of skin condition. Taking responsibility does not mean accepting blame! Knowing what the issue is, is more than half the battle. I believe she will overcome this!!!

I like how she elaborated that the stress goes from the brain and your body responds and you feel literal sensations on your skin. That is the part people need to hear, because they literally are feeling physical feelings on their skin

Dr. Lee has come a long way in breaking this news to patients. I remember an episode where she lead with, “it’s all in your head” and the patient immediately shut down and felt like she wasn’t being listened to because of the diagnosis. Leading with the clinical name for the condition, explaining her clues, and asking about stressors really were masterful ways to gently share what was going on. Mental health has a stigma, I pick at my skin and the other day caused it to bleed badly on my cheek. I put on a bandaid and was so embarrassed and wanted to hide it from my students (I’m a primary teacher). I’m the end, I just told them the truth that I scratched my face when I was stressed and hurt myself in accident. I’m afraid their parents or my coworkers will judge me for it, but I also know it’s like a physical illness in that sometimes there are flare ups.

My husband used to remind me often, it's not WHAT you say, but HOW you say it. This is a perfect example. Dr Lee, telling Brittany the same thing that her last Dr. said but in a kinder, understanding way, was what helped Brittany come to terms with her condition and how to solve this dilemma.

I knew immediately what it was when I saw the back of her shoulders and back was clear. A lot of ppl wouldn’t accept this diagnosis, but Britney is smart and she wants to heal. That’s the secret, she wants it. She fought so damned hard all these years and she isn’t gonna give up. I respect her immensely.

Okay, I'm sorry but that diagnosis isn't exactly correct either. I know because I have this same problem. I've been to several doctors and have had a biopsy done but it doesn't come back as anything. It is accompanied by severe neurological itching around the lesion area that feels like your being stung by fire ants. While everyone does have emotional pain and trauma I'm still not buying this. I've worked in a state psych facility and while there definitely are conditions brought about by phycological situations that can cause excessive scratching and picking of skin this isn't that. It will mimic that though because this will drive you crazy! The truth is doctors don't know what this is yet. There is t a name for this. The closest I've seen is Brachial Radial Purititis. Getting a diagnosis for this doesn't help because there isn't a cure either. Basically, I've never had sores anyplace but primarily my arms. At first it was below the elbow extending into the top of my hands. I thought it was some kind of fungus or mite. It wasn't. The first time I noticed this was after I gave birth to my son. I thought I may have acquired a hospital infection but even if I did they still don't know what it is and would probably never admit they could be responsible. It is cyclical meaning after a period of one to five years of tormenting you in specific regions of your anatomy it will disappear and go dormant. You will feel fine and believe this has gone away. Then it returns. Once it starts this it seems to time itself to the seasons. For me the lesions would appear at the beginning of fall and last until the beginning of spring accompanied by high levels of agonizing itching and stinging of a neurological nature. Then all summer I would be absolutely fine once they went away. As this progresses you noticed lots of pain and some inflammatory swelling in your joints. That started in my elbow region and has now migrated to my shoulder and hips. I do not have sores on my trunk area. This is within a timeline of 11 years. This is the first season the sores are not so visibly present. However, the itching is now located all the way up to my shoulders. It stings terribly and is accompanied by terrible shoulder and joint stiffness and soreness. Occasionally, I will feel a tremendous amount of fatigue much like I'm coming down with a flu but I'm not. So, to this point there is only a few things that have MAJORITY helped with this condition. The first thing that has saved both my skin and my sanity as I am very fair skinned and these things leave scars and make your skin look awful. There is a product on Amazon called Yadom Khun More, a clear menthol liquid that comes in a rollerball tube. It is from Thailand. I like menthol but I apologize if you don't like the smell. Take a liberal amount and when you see a sore rub the entire effected area and wait between 10-20 min. Don't scratch. The itching will be gone. Also, Thai balms used for massage work VERY well. The best being Hong Thai balm. Unfortunately, this stuff isn't that easy to get in the US but if your diligent the Swan brand kills most of the neurological itch within five minutes. It last approx 4 to 6 hours per application and if you get a really itchy sore just administer the clear Yadom. You can use any Thai massage oil you can find in the tubes. They all basically do the same thing and are great for joint pain. My skin didn't have scratches or any bleeding or infection on it thanks to these products. So as this problem arrives I just use as needed. I hope some day medical science will investigate further into this. I suspect it's probly related to an autoimmune disorder of some kind of a type of psoriasis. This could be viral as it is cyclical in nature but there is no test for it and no name. If you eat a KETO like diet and stay there permanently this won't get rid of it but it will help you loose the rest of your weight. I'm fair skinned and have struggles with weight but I've never needed weight loss surgery or anything that severe so please don't accept the doctors telling you it's due to obesity either because it isn't. I do stay away from sugar entirely and have omitted processed foods that contain wheat or white flour. It takes about a year but if you omit those three things you will notice a drastic difference. I hope this helps.

"In your head" doesn't mean "not real". We live in a society that treats anxiety and compulsions as character flaws rather than as medical conditions. Her skin feels itchy to her. That's real. Her desire to.scratch it is no.different than anyone with an itch. The reasons for the feelings of itchiness are unknown or hard to test for, but no less valid than if her liver was malfunctioning (causes itchiness). I wish her great health. She doesn't need to be "accountable" or "take responsibility". She needs medicine, support, and respect. It is hard to fight addictions and medical issues. Hats off to her.

There is a difference between saying an affliction is all in your head and saying that it’s psychologically maintained. So nice to see a doctor that understands this and knows how to communicate it.

Dr. Lee actually explained the cause, and did it in a kind, compassionate way. She didn't just tell she needed mental health assistance, as other doctors apparently did. She empowered her to take charge of the situation.

As someone who picks so much at my skin, this is so good to watch, unfortunately no medication or therapy has made me stop picking yet, but I’m just happy that more people are aware of how powerful our own minds are

Dr. Lee just has so much empathy for her patients. This was basically the same diagnosis as the other doctor that it was a mental issue, but delivered in such empathetic way. Dr. Lee is such a wonderful person.

I went thru the same thing. My dermatologist wrapped my skin tight with gauze and wraps so I couldn’t dig. I was given an itch relief medicine and it finally went away but I have lasting scars. Mine started as an OCD thing after my son brought home scabies from school, after that….bugs were always crawling on me. I hope she is doing better and knows she is not alone. It was difficult to accept it was ME!!

Love Dr. Lee's compassion for her clients. She took the time to gently explain the condition instead of dismissing her and that gentleness allowed Brittany to accept and begin to heal.

It made so much sense to say that she's transferred her addiction from eating to drinking to itching. I think that's what helped her understand why it's taken over her, because she's been through that before

I think the fact that Dr. Lee gave her a logical explanation, in that she explained about the location being tied to where she can reach, mixed with compassion made her understand and accept it.
