Moms usually understand us the best. And for an autistic person it's really nice having someone who gets where we are coming from, because that is so rare. Most people aren't willing to put in the effort to get to know us. So, we tend to have a few close relationships rather than trying to make a lot of friends. Basically, we need to put a lot of effort into socializing with others, so we want to deal with people who are willing to do the same for us.

I have a clinical fear of needles, and I’m awed by Dr. Lee’s tactic here. I wish that the physicians I have seen in the past had thought of things like this. Not to say I’ve never had a doctor accommodate my fear, but that was usually either by giving me a separate room so I didn’t have to see other people being treated (vaccination clinics), or in one case by prescribing me a one-time medication to help ease my nerves before an in-clinic surgery.

As an autistic person, I can say that dealing with us is both simple and complicated. You can't easily anticipate how we might react unless you know us extremely well. We're just too different from other people for your social instincts to work on us. It's the same problem we have with you but far worse. Because we probably have a great deal more experience dealing with neurotypicals than you do with autistic people. Basically, you are autistic to us as well. But the good part of having an autistic person who is vocal is that we tend to be very straight forward and honest. So, we can tell you exactly what we need.

My son is on the spectrum. He represented atypically and was first in our state to be diagnosed with “Aspergers” and 5 other labels… there was no guidebook for me, but kids don’t get to pick their parents, so I dug in to be his informed advocate and teach him to advocate for himself as he got older. It was a long, painful, journey, but my son is in his 30s, has a family, and is an X-ray & MRI tech in a hospital. I knew if anything happened to me, he would have to fight for himself. I wanted him to trust he could. Cant impart that if you coddle them. Bless you on your journey🙏🏻

Yes and no. Autistics are more obviously animal. Allistics are able to pretend they're something other than an animal, so much so that they convince themselves and others that they aren't actually an animal. If they're willing to acknowledge the act, they can connect with an autistic on a workable level.

This was handled start to finish by everyone perfectly. Mom, son, Dr., nurse, all perfect. This is an A+ disability interaction. Dr. Lee talked to the patient, not his mom, about his pain and his comfort and that was so key in him being relaxed. Great outcome.

I once read something that really stuck with me: “Saying you can’t be sad because someone might have it worse is like saying you can’t be happy because someone might have it better.” If you have depression like I do, being reminded of the worse situations others are in can make you feel even more depressed. Instead of thinking, “Well, my life isn’t so bad,” I think, “How can I ever be happy when so many people are suffering?” The fact that other people may be in worse situations doesn’t make my situation pain-free. It’s not wrong for me to be upset about it.

Please read this 🙏 The Israeli occupation, a fact even acknowledged by Israelis, traces back to 1948 when the Balfour Declaration of 1917 pledged support for a Jewish national home in Palestine. This historical context is essential to understanding the plight of Palestinians. For over 70 years, Palestinians have endured displacement, restricted movement, and lived under harsh conditions. The term “apartheid” aptly describes the segregation and discrimination they face in their own land, marked by numerous Israeli checkpoints. Despite countless peaceful attempts, oppression persists, leading to further land loss and human suffering. It’s important to note that Hamas, often a focus of international attention, emerged as a response to active resistance against this enduring injustice. If you trying to feel sorry for Israelis today I hope you felt sorry for Palestinians for the past 70 years 🇵🇸🙏. Give the people their homes and country back.🇵🇸🙏

Ohhh what a sweetheart omg. As an autistic having any procedure done is extremely nerve wracking, and I'm so glad she tried to create another sensation with the vibration as a distraction! Ive always said autistic senses are 50 times higher than most people. It is very difficult to explainto people just how more sensitive we are, especially with touch. We can easily become overstimulated and that can lead to other problems. He took it like a champ! What a sweet guy!

She did such a great job of gaining his trust. He was rather direct when he described being anxious about the procedure. Not being a fan of needles, and having to deal with one right in your line of sight is enough to induce anxiety. I'm glad she was able to successfully numb him with minimal needle jabs. I'm sure that helped his confidence, and made it easier for him to endure the entire process. Great job Dr. Lee...

I hate needles too. Any time I have a shot or blood drawn I will talk to the Dr or nurse about something weird or funny to distract myself. It helps! 😺

Everyone involved with this was amazing. Dr. Lee was patient and thoughtful. The patient was very brave and trusted his mom and Dr Lee even though she was a stranger. His mom has obviously built a foundation of trust and mutual respect with her son. Outstanding job by all.
