Full title of talk: "Creating Patient Safety - Practical Movement Applications For Experiential Knowledge and Integrating Psychosocial Approaches in Patients with Persistent Pain"
About: Integrating pain knowledge into care can enhance and improve outcomes. There is often a gap between learning new information and it’s practical application. The field of physical therapy and it’s role in optimizing patient care can be enhanced through increasing knowledge and exposure to practical ways that a pain physical therapist applies psychosocial approaches to treatment of persistent pain and actual experiential knowledge of how mechanisms of breath work, gentle movement, pacing integration and graded exposure can establish a sense of safety
for a patient when learning to move again.

Mai Huong Ho-Tran PT, DPT, Fellow of Pain Sciences has been practicing physical therapy since 2002. She has a wealth of experience in the areas of chronic pain, functional restoration and multidisciplinary care, pediatrics and neurology but has worked in the out-patient setting in private practice, worker’s compensation and hospital based systems.
She is currently the Lead PT for Kaiser Permanente’s Northern California region in chronic pain.
She received her Master’s in Physical Therapy from Chapman University and her transitional DPT from UCSF/SFSU’s Graduate Program in Physical Therapy. She completed her TPS certification through ISPI (now EIM) and is proud to have completed EIM’s inaugural cohort of the Pain Sciences Fellowship in 2019. She currently serves as clinical faculty for UCSF/SFSU and has guest lectured and taught continuing education courses for Kaiser Permanente locally and regionally, with the American Association of Pain Psychology and multiple community venues.
Her experience also delves deeply in mindfulness, yoga therapy, Tai Chi, somatic movement retraining and spiritual direction. She is a mother, yogi, runner, agent of change and life-long learner.
