It's unfortunate Rebirth and Geoff lost their thunder in DC. The initiative from Rebirth to Doomsday Clock could have been the foundation for a really cool era at DC. Instead we keep getting stopgaps waiting for better material. It'd be interesting to learn what was going on behind the scenes one day.

@@Nerwrax15 nothing has been contradicted. they already explained at the end of Justice/Doom War that the evil permeating thru the universe was fracturing the timeline, so to explain how Doomsday Clock, Event Leviathan, and other stuff were happening at the same time. Death Metal is after DClock and they specifically mention how Dr Manhattan did what he did, along with every villain of every Crisis event, because Perpeatua was whispering in their ears so that each crisis would weaken the Source Wall. the delays of DClock surely did dampen their plans for it to have a more resounding effect but the J/D War arc wrapped that angle up and now with a Infinite Omniverse, everything is canon so DClcok is most assuredly, not contradicted or non impactful. It brought back the JSA and Legion of Superheroes and they found a meta way to explain the delays impact on the series.
@Nerwrax15
@Nerwrax15 3 жыл бұрын
@@franktheavocado7573 using justice league to retrofit Doomsday Clock's wonky continuity and fit it back into place does not excuse Doomsday Clock being out if sync on its own at the time its story was being told. And now with the Omniverse now being thing and chucking everything into a blender under "it all happened!" Means Doomsday Clock literally does not matter, wether it happened or not, DC would still be in the place it is now regardless of the story told in Clock.

Such an accurate description of the whole situation. Comic continuity is one big LOL NO. Of course, I always say that deconstruction, by it’s very nature, is not constructive (it’s literally in the name) and so it fails to bring any value to the table when it becomes the rule and not the exception, the groundwork/linchpin for all continuity - the establishment instead of the anti-establishment. The New52 and postmodern style DC in general has given a fine example of this I think, given how often they have to reboot anew and fix everything compared to before the modern era. You have to grow to earn books like The Killing Joke, Watchmen, TDKR, Kingdom Come, etc., in order to fully appreciate them and how they flipped the genre on its head You can’t start a universe from a point of deconstruction! (I’m looking at you, Zack Snyder) But then again, those are the books that are popular and grown people love feeling like their love for superheroes in tights is validated by the dark, cynical tone and realism, so what do I know?

Braden Hogan difference is those stories TDKR watchmen killing joke kingdom come are well written but people often mistakes dark for well written
@bradenhogan2
@bradenhogan2 3 жыл бұрын
@@Galvatronover They are “well written” but they also aren’t trying to be the foundation of a whole new universe of stories or a new status quo. They’re all more or less self contained and exist outside of continuity. You could bring up The Killing Joke being canonized but even that’s not a leg to stand on (no pun intended) because DC editorial doesn’t have it in them to permanently leave Barbara paralyzed (you know, the DARK, REALISTIC thing to do!) You could also bring up Year One which is still probably the most popular and definitive Batman origin, but I would argue the classic, Golden Age Batman story is even more timeless because it’s simple, concise, and not as excessive as Year One, and is still the basic skeleton Year One is built on When DC acquired the rights to Charlton characters, they hired Alan Moore to write their first big story with these new characters. On paper, the decision makes 100% sense because Alan Moore was the most talented writer in the world at the time. When Moore turned in the script, they loved it but knew it would not be the proper way to introduce these characters to mainstream audiences for the purposes of establishing a sustainable status quo, so Alan Moore was told to turn them into original analogs and do whatever he wanted with them. That story would become, arguably, the best comic book to ever see publication. It wasn’t the start of a whole new universe, nor was it intended to be. It was a stand alone title. You can’t break the toys as you’re assembling them!

Also the angle in the panel after he shoots the goon in the head shows smoke coming out of the silhouette of a pistol. And in watchmen dr manhattan and ozimandias' created crazy tech advancements. So, like with the ink bloch mask I assume some company created a substance that made things invisible and he capitalized on it.

The best part is hearing the passion coming from Sal. It brings so much life into the story, that Johns would want. I really lovethe ideas formulated throughout this story. It may not be perfect, but the Manhatten/Superman stuff is honestly really beautiful to listen too. Great job Sal, happy New Years to the Comic Pop team!!!!

When I initially read this, I felt like it was amazing as a mainstream DC comic (seeing Gardner cuss was almost worth the price of admission alone), but a bit tepid as a Watchmen sequel (that's fine, though). The "every universe exists somewhere" thing was particularly mind-blowing at the time. I love to think that 90s JLI and campy silver age World's Finest and Camalot 3000 etc. etc. all "exist" out there somewhere along with the New 52 and Dark Knight and post Crisis DC. Watching this video makes me want to go back and reread this series again! Thanks!

For the record, there was in fact a new 52 legion of superheroes. There were at least 2 books, L.o.S and Legion Lost, which did a crossover with Teen Titans and Superboy. Another thing is that, in the New 52, Firestorm's origin didn't even have Martin Stein as a part of the duo, it was Jason Rusch and Ronnie Raymond as seperate individual Firestorms before they eventually formed a single individual (Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Men). Johns didn't both to check the continuity of the characters, whose continuity was imperative to the story he was telling :/

Watching this video and remembering Dr. Manhattans whole scheme, it honestly reminds me of the Shin Megami Tensei lore the whole thing with the Axiom and the Great Will created Messiahs to stop YHVH from screwing up everything. The Great Will is just the meta universe and Dr. Manhattan is YHVH.

The way I interpret the "rebirth" of everyone's histories is like the superman debacle. Post-crisis Kal merged with New 52 Superman and now they kind of have a shared history. The same concept, but universe-wide. A shared post-crisis/New 52 timeline.

Re: why does Dr. Manhattan not see the conversation with Superman: it's not explicitly stated as the reason but it's mentioned many times in this book that Firestorm and Pozhar constantly emit tachyons, which are time altering particles that also give Manhattan his powers. Since Pozhar is sneaking up right behind him right when Superman is about to punch or crumpled on the floor next to him during the conversation, it's reasonable to assume the tachyons fuck with any time travel/future seeing powers. Re: the Metaverse: the previous metaverse universes (Earth 1985, Earth New 52, etc) are not part of the multiverse, but are more like overwritten files on a computer. The top, current reality, is the "real" one, but the previous ones still exist "underneath" and continue in their own continuity, which is what The Button shows us with the Flashpoint universe. The previous universes may even have their own multiverse with versions of Earth 2 and Earth 3, etc.
@famousthaneus9810
@famousthaneus9810 3 жыл бұрын
To your first point: That seems highly unlikely given how powerful Manhattan is. If that were the case, that would mean that any amount of tachyon emission, even the most minuscule, would create gaps in his precog ability. It’s fine for some things to just be narrative oversight, or just simply excused because the writers wrote themselves into a corner
@joshuaharper1206
@joshuaharper1206 3 жыл бұрын
@@famousthaneus9810 I don't see why that necessarily means any amount of tachyon emissions would affect his powers. Firestorm/Pozhar are both pretty powerful so I assume it's not a miniscule amount. And he was RIGHT there, so it's pretty limited in its effectiveness. It also didn't stop his powers as a whole. Even if it was a weakness, so what? He can write him to have a weakness.

The moral of the story with the whole jhons fucking around with watchmen is don't bastardize other people's stuff and be surprised when they do it to you. The whole ending with Clark becoming the omnipotent active "watcher" of the watchmen universe spits in the face of one of the central themes in watchmen (who watches the watchmen?).

I don't think Geoff Johns understood what Dr. Manhattan meant by the "Nothing ever ends" monologue at the conclusion of Watchmen. Adrian was reflecting on his actions and wondering if they were worth it in the end, to which Dr. Manhattan replies "End? Nothing ever ends, Adrian." To me, Dr. Manhattan was saying that human conflict is endless as long as humanity lives, that not even the world's smartest man can end it with a complex masterplan. And that Adrian will not find any closure from this because his dream of a unified world without war is flawed and was always going to be in vain. It is within human nature to keep fighting each other when there is no threat to be found. Dr. Manhattan was talking about the idea of war, hatred, death, sacrifice, and even love being endless because they are bound to happen again. If anything, the real lesson I got from it is that everyone should make good choices for themselves, not for the world. With this sequel, Geoff Johns seems to think that Dr. Manhattan meant everything like "everything" never ends. I could be wrong about that but with how Johns usually misinterprets previous stories from other writers and is always retconning them, I think that's what happened here.

I can not give this enough likes. I was so hyped for this story as well as this episode. Loved GJ's run on Green Lantern, and really thought they were going to reveal that the Hand of Creation was Dr Manhatton.. which obviously didn't happen. Though it could've been just looked at as a cash grab, I thought it turned out pretty well. It had the potential to be so much more.. but it had the chance to be much worse. In the end it landed somewhere in the middle. Thanks you guys for finally reviewing this!

I felt the strongest part of the story was the issue from Manhattan's point of view, how he kept undoing continuity and the universe kept making Superman and superheroes happen. Especially the end, where he realises he is inaction and Superman is the man of Action. Good way to tie a bow around DC comics as a whole.

Ok, maybe this is nitpicky, but how did no one at DC realize that CHANGING PAST EVENTS is NOT one of Dr. Manhattan's powers!? In fact, he can't even time travel, like at all. He just has awareness of all time (that he's existed for), but can't actually change anything based on that knowledge.
