The hooks are for quick criss crossing the laces up. They make it easy to undo them when you need to take them off. (I’m an army veteran and the hooks are standard in combat boots)

Aside from everyday wear, I was wondering how durable would they be for 'bending'. I'm planning to buy a pair as my everyday footwear at work and I drive a car with a stick shift which means they're gonna be bent a lot as I step on the throttle and clutch pedals continuously.

In my personal experience (and advice from a member of staff in a doc outlet) they tend to run a bit big i fit a mens 10.5/11 in most shpes yet a size 10 fits bang on

The hooks are supposed to be for criss cross lacing. This gives more support for the ankle. Google how to lace up skates (search video).
