Aye, no need to change what feels right for you if someone doesn't like it. I have a habit of wearing high waisted cargos a bit too low, which makes them look slightly baggy and a tad too loose. However, it feels much more comfortable and lets me hide my boot's top to prevent snow falling inside, so I ignore any comments as I know what feels and works best for me.

I think stacking v cuffing is subjective to the person, as well as to trends. Same as the cut of the pants. For instance, you would need a classic or boot cut jeans for a western boot, or for a lot of motorcycle boots. You’re right about tucking, the only time you should wear boots like that is for practical purposes, like going through heavy brush and you want to protect your pant leg. A good pair of leather boots can also be re-soled and refinished by a good cobbler.
