My GP wants me to take statins based on *one* biomarker only: slightly raised cholesterol. As she is new to the practice, she has not seen me in person; indeed, I have never met her - this recommendation came via phone - and very snippy she was too when I objected. No ECG. I was a board certified Internal Medicine specialist in the USA. I had to retire early when I realized that allopathic medical doctors had become to a great degree simply pawns to push pharmaceuticals to end users for the benefit of pharmaceutical companies. About half of the disease burden in the USA is due to lifestyle choices and can be ameliorated by lifestyle changes. Pharmaceuticals like statins are inferior to diet changes but your family doctor does not know this because he or she is not taught this in medical school and this approach is suppressed in the medical literature.

Some years back I was diagnosed with an untreatable chronic condition. I realised that my best hope of ameliorating the symptoms was to optimise my diet. So I visited a famous medical bookshop located directly opposite a renowned teaching hospital, and wandered around looking for their nutrition section. Eventually I asked the staff and they said: "oh - we had to close it - no-one was buying the books. The students read the nutrition chapter in their textbooks, and that's it." The mainstream medical profession has lost touch with the elements of health - especially nutrition. They are woefully ineffective at prevention, and industry interests control the public discussion. I used to work in the meeting planning department for a large pharmaceutical company that sold a statin. We regularly held "Key Opinion Leader" long week-end conferences at very posh resorts that doctors and their families would attend. Eventually governments stepped in and we were tasked with creating a very cumbersome method for tracking and reporting the amount we were spending on each doctor, and meet new restrictions (all different) being implemented by countries all over the world. I remember one doctor lamenting the end of these "conferences", bragging that we (our company) had paid for his honeymoon! A few years later when I had a high cholesterol test result, my doctor put me on that same statin, which gave me very painful leg cramps, so fortunately I stopped taking it. So glad I did now that the truth about statins is out!

Thank you for confirming what I suspected all along. When my "doctor" at the time prescribed statins without bloodworks, simply based on my ethnicity, I remember the knee joint pains and what he said at the time: "we have drugs for that too". I subsequently weaned myself of this 3 month experiment and have been back to normal ever since. I see the same thing happening again with big pharma and the current worldwide pandemonium. I will fight this one tooth and nail as well. There has to be better accountability, but it's a difficult uphill battle when so many are on the take.

It's not so much setting you up for being a cash cow for 'big pharma', it's more a situation where doctors practice 'cover your ass' medicine, where they have to toe the line and follow what is considered current 'expert' recommended treatment, because they're afraid of being sued if they don't. Hence, the proliferation of prescribing statins to everyone, because of a few 'experts' in cardiology who ARE paid by the pharmaceutical companies to promote their use. Why do they do this? Because they have no other ideas on how to decrease heart attacks; once they got people to stop smoking, that was all they had. The suggestion that elevated blood sugar caused blood vessel damage which would increase heart disease, would tell the world that they had been wrong about dietary fats for 80 years, and that would open them up to lawsuits as well. As always, it's all about money..... not your health.

I do not see the the matter as settled and the misgivings I have do not come from celebrities on social media.... comments and those of other critics should be taken seriously. The failure to do so contributes to the suspicion...." His answer was non-committal of course. Some years ago during a very stressful period in my life I had some sort of mental disturbance characterized by insomnia and some memory lapse. I had a number of different diagnoses, first with depression, then bipolar, then another doctor said it was neither, just anxiety. In the end the bipolar diagnosis stuck and I was told that it was incurable but treatable with meds. The meds, however caused severe side-effects including elevated cholesterol, cognitive dulling and urinary incontinence and along with that I basically just wasn't myself. Finally I got fed up thinking that since I was neither a danger to myself or anyone else I'd rather deal with a brain attack than a heart attack and the urinary incontinence was just insufferable. I told my doctor I wanted to try getting off the meds, slowly and in a controlled way so I didn't have to deal with any adverse withdrawal symptoms. He strongly counselled against it but reluctantly agreed. The less meds I took the better I felt until I was finally off them entirely and completely feeling like my happy normal self again. That was years ago and I haven't looked back since. The thing about psychotropic drugs is that the side effects are the same as the symptoms of the illness they are supposed to be treating and one of the side effects is nothing less than suicidal ideation! Then the label tells you if you feel that way call your doctor, but it was your doctor who had prescribed the medication in the first place! In that case I'd feel more inclined to call the police or my lawyer! I know this is off topic because we are talking about statins but the problems with statins is I think even worse with psychotropic drugs where the drug companies as well as the doctors are really just whistling in the dark. Caveat emptor.
@maxdublin56062 жыл бұрын
@Laughingathwrld I think that mental illness like all other illness is part of the human condition and a lot of it may be both inexplicable and ephemeral. I completely agree that psych drugs should not be prescribed without, as you say, deep medical investigations but usually they are and once the diagnosis is made it sticks because the side effects of the drugs are similar to the symptoms which creates a vicious circle or a self-fulfilling prophecy. As to your final point of psychological socio-economic problems creating mental illness, all too true. It is not even controversial that every rise in unemployment rates results in a rise in suicides; that climate alarmism has led to anxiety and depression, especially among children; that the pandemic school closures have done the same on an even larger scale. But where are the psych workers who should be on the front lines protesting all of these developments? As far as I can tell, crickets.

I saw data where the the mortality gap between Statins and placebo was 0.3%. So 99% on Statins did not die compared to 98.7%. So they then claimed a 30% benefit for Statin use. Any layperson would look at the numbers and suggest 99% is so close to 98.7% that there is effectively no difference

It is worse than that even, they claim a 30% (Relative) reduction in one area only (such as CAD) and do not publish “all cause mortality” figures.

FYI for those in the U.S. in particular - I am in Vermont and the doctor I talked about statins with in my 50's gave me a hard fact: in the U.S. alone, statins cause a minimum of 45,000 cases of diabetes PER YEAR. I challenge the doctors pushing statins to define "serious adverse effect" and exclude diabetes. This number comes from multiple independent medical studies following actual cases. And by 2010, the research had already resulted in the American FDA requiring a medical Warning to be put on statin packages sold in the States, stating that the statin can cause diabetes. Is there such a warning about diabetes on statins sold in Australia? In the U.S., we have an epidemic of late onset diabetes, for a combination of causes. But NO ONE with a family history of late onset diabetes, or at high risk for it for any reason, should take statins. We have no heart disease in my family, or heart attacks, beginning with my great-grandparents in the 1800s down to my generation in 2021. But there IS a genetic history of late onset diabetes. I would consider it abuse of Stand of Care for any doctor to prescribe them for me with that history. There is no way I would take them.

I was on rosuvastatin (Crestor) for about 15 years. Along the way I developed sore muscles, especially in my legs; brain fog, poor memory, and balance problems. These symptoms lead to my being forced to take early retirement (not all side effects of statins are bad!) I quit the Crestor last November and all of these symptoms were much reduced. I'm quite surprised at the hostility that people show towards people like me who have read the literature and come to a conclusion similar to Demasi's.

Hello. When you went off Crestor, how long did it take for you to start feeling normal again? And did you go through any weird "withdrawal" type issues the first couple weeks (like mood swings or lingering memory issues/confusion)? Asking because someone I know stopped taking Lipitor last week. She was doing well, feeling upbeat, etc, but then had an episode of confusion this morning and she's been pretty moody all day.

In addition to revealing facts about statins and the dishonesty of drug companies, she bolsters my belief that we have raised generations of highly "educated", and "indoctrinated" individuals. They sell their credibility and character to the highest bidder. Thanks to social media, there is now hope that the corruption at the highest levels of the academy, government, the bureaucracy, and the corporate suite will see a day of reckoning - hopefully in this decade.

I stopped taking statins after emailing my GP. Another doctor rang me and agreed .The difference in a couple of weeks was remarkable. I’m even gardening again albeit lightly. I was able to convince her doctor to take her off of the drug and change her blood thinner for a three month trial period. Her improvement was so dramatic, it caused her doctor to rethink the efficacy of that drug and others. I believe all of the major health difficulties she has experienced have been the direct or indirect result of all the drugs she has been giving, starting with HRT.

80% of Type 2 Diabetics die from heart disease. The root cause of T2D is high insulin (insulin resistance). If a T2D lowers insulin level, they can reverse their problem. High insulin is also the cause of high blood pressure. Lowering insulin level reverses many metabolic issues. What a brave, good and inteligent person! My lipid numbers were always bad and they just got worse as I aged. Doctors recommended statins, but I resolved to work with diet and exercise. At about age 62, my doc had me get a cardio calcium CT scan, which would reveal atherosclerosis. It was below detectable levels. My lipids continued to worsen and a few years later, he had me do a more precise test that scans carotid arteries. Doc told me I have the arteries of a 30 year old at age 65 and I've been eating carnivore diet with much cheating for about 3 years. Why do we keep getting suckered by drug pushers?

I am sure I had polymyalgia TWICE a few years after starting statins. - started first in 2005 in wrists then later a tingling neck then weak very painful shoulders then hips and then knees (in pairs over 3 months) Doc and me thought it was carpal tunnel syndrome in both wrists (first affected joints, hot weak with tingling fingers) as I was over-practising guitar and as I waited 6 months for first wrist op, these other joints started having the pain in pairs over next few months - I thought it might be very bad seating posture for 8 hours a day at work, Doc asked me to wait for the op before checking out the neck and shoulders and I stupidly accepted this whilst other joints became affected and self medicated increasing to max Ibuprofen 400mg 6 times a day that only made things worse (this med can cause pain in itself)- the worst 9 months of my life, sleeping very badly for only 3 hours a night as I woke due to shoulder pain every time I turned, so brain fog, plus hobbling about like an old man at 53. I had one wrist alleviated after 6 months, the other got better 6 weeks later as I had stopped guitar after first op then all other joints got better after another 2 months for no reason. This all happened again 9 years later in 2015 for 6 months, but finally found a brutish physio who really opened up my joints (what agony) then made me stop the Ibuprofen dead and swim 30 mins every day - all went away. 5 years later the doc stopped the statins for god knows what reason - though I had questioned the doc about them after the second bout. The great difficulty for the medical profession is that "modern" medicine is so very recent in sophistication beyond the leaches and herbal dances stage. Those in the profession are genuinely motivated to understand the causes of disease, and I have known very many of these professionals, but the knowledge just is not there. Into the breach steps the pharmaceutical industry. There are a great number of good drugs and procedures, but this masks the gulf between what is known and what is still unknown. It must be oh so very tempting to take the certainty of the medical pharmaceutical reps, and assume that it is the truth. Well, the average GP does not have the time to truth everything reps say to them, even if they had the time , the inclination, and the brains. One leg of this conundrum is that GP's think of themselves as scientists. They are not, but the reps are primed by scientists with a wholey compromised perspective. Another leg of the conundrum is that the overwhelming number of patients are barely literate. Not intending to be disrespectful here, but lets face the fact that a great many patients present with vague fears, rather than with defined symptoms. They have something that does not feel right, but this does not add up to a symptomatology that corresponds to a "known" syndrome. Remember that not every symptom corresponds to a known syndrome. Also, Gp's are under constant pressure to get the patient in and out, and so inevitably We've
