What an amazing performance! Totally at a loss to explain where that copper coin came from, vanishes when your hands were totally empty, and that double climax ending was killer! Why didn't you put this one in your book lol. You done did David Roth proud, and should have gotten a trophy IMHO. Congrats!

I think the biggest compliment to any magician that preceded is to do their trick, whether the same or add different touches, knowing they won’t fool Penn and Teller. Absolutely beautiful and wonderful and the dialogue for the trick was perfect

It was actually an original trick, but used some phrases that David Roth made popular, and used his idea of adding props to create magicial theatre. It is also based on another Roth trick, called the Sleeve. If you get a chance, look it up, it is wonderful. Thanks for commenting!

I really enjoyed incorporporating lines of David's into the patter, not only because they worked so well, but I knew it would trigger recognition and memories from the magicians who saw the spot. I wanted to say at one point, "a half dollar, a fifty cent piece, A SILVER COIN", but the producers wanted to insert a little joke to replace a joke and sequence that they cut out of the routine for time. At least I got the first two parts of that in! I am sure you also recognized the famous line from The Tuning Fork, as well as a few other things I used from other Roth routines. I can only think of 3 coin routines that fooled them off the top of my head. There is not a lot of wiggle room when it comes to coins. They simply know the moves.

@@TinkerTailorSoldier1 funny thing, 2 of those 3 routines didn't really fool them. Eric Jones won because they miscalled the name of the gaffed coin. Eric Meade won because he started by quoting the thoughts of one of the judges that in order to fool a magician you just need to fool them with 10%of the trick. They went with it, but that rule would cause them to be fooled much more than they are, so they only did it once. The third guy did a commercial trick called Three Fly, and they thought he was doing the standard trick, but only afterwards realized he did something else , so he got awarded his trophy in a later show. My understanding was that if they expected one thing and they got surprised, that would be enough to "fool" them. I had several surprises in the trick - the appearance of the copper coin, the complete vanishes, and the two kicker endings. Did they know? I have no idea. I can only assume they talked about it with the judge, and he was satisfied they knew enough. But they never mentioned any of that in the post- performance conversation, so who knows.

@@rubinsteincoinmagic I forgot about the 3 fly guy. I was thinking of Ryan Hiyashi (probably misspelled his name). Pretty much did a card/coin matrix. Ended up with a FU Trophy. Then with the Eric guy, I think they accidentally said he had a gimmicked “turtle” coin but I guess it wasn’t is what you’re saying?

Oh yes, Ryan didn't fool them, they just enjoyed his presentation. Eric did use a "turtle" but only in one part. They knew he used something, but just miscalled what it was. If they just said they knew he used something special, he wouldn't have won. But again, the important thing to the producers is not the fooling part. They just want a good performance, and don't want any arguing about the method. If it looks like a challenge, rather than have a back and forth they go right to the judges. Best thing is just to smile and agree and look like a good guy, not an a-hole. The first time I presented I did a trick the producers wanted because they liked the story. I knew they would know the basic method because the idea was standard, even though I used my own techniques. So I changed the ending thinking it would fool them, and they never mentioned it. I challenged them in a nice way, and they answered but in doing so gave away the method to a lot of people who wouldn't have gotten it. So, lesson learned.

I don’t think it’s heartbreaking because they all know there are different goals in performing on Fool Us. Some people want the trophy, some want promotion, some want to honor P&T as role models, and some want to pay tribute to their beloved late friend. They don’t want to give all the amazing people trophies. They want to celebrate the art of magic. That’s why they also perform and that’s why they always have such uplifting feedback for every single performer.

@@FoodWithShay I did watch it again and at the end, Penn gave a little bit more away than I previously realized. Nevertheless, a beautiful routine and as smooth as when I saw it the first time. If I did not pay attention, I would be fooled. Also, knowing how a trick is done is something completely different than being able to execute it. I am no magician, I would never ever be able to do this, maybe with some training, but certainly not on this level of smoothness. The beauty is that we can enjoy something even if we generally know how it is done.

Wonderful - magic as a performance art at its best - even though you kinda sort of know how its done you can still suspend that and enjoy the show and admire the skills and dedication involved to flawlessly deliver - it takes me back to being a six year old kid again with all the awe and wonder of an adult pulling a coin out of my ear. The idea of the tribute was to do a trick with props as David did, to create a piece of magic theatre as opposed to just another coin trick. They didn't use it in the 20 second intro because it didn't fit with the Roth thing. Neither Allison or Penn recognized me from the prior appearance. My guess is that the producers never mentioned it to them, and they wouldn't remember, especially because I look different (hair loss). I actually met Penn while he was on his book signing tour, and when I got to him I mentioned I was on the show this season (it filmed in May). He looked at me with no recognition until I mentioned the trick I did, then he realized who I was. I told him I was also on season 5 and it didn't seem to register with him. I had him sign a photo from the show of me both from this season and the last time I was on (which he did). Anyway, thanks for your question and glad you enjoyed the routine!

@@danielpanatha although the main theme of the routine was appearance in 2 impossible locations (hand or purse), the routine also contained tricks known as Spellbound (color change), A transposition (copper and silver changing places), a production (the change), and a large coin finish (the climax). Tricks are often routined so the main effect is not a one shot deal which would last 5 seconds - so you get repetition in magic like with coins going across from one hand to the other (Eric Jones), Coins assembling one at a time under playing cards (Ryan Hyashi), coins vanishing one at a time to appear inside a cylinder (Eric Meade), and coins going through a table, as well as any card trick - production of 4 aces one at a time, ambitious card where a selected card keeps movinf to he top of the deck, etc. Take a look at the coin effects of the great David Roth - coins appearing under a black hole, coins changing one at a time from copper to silver, and so many more. So, what's your point?

I'm a little confused. If David Roth "fooled" them and you copied his act with your spin on some of the tricks, did P&T figure out in-between acts? They could have said the same thing to Roth. Just a variation of "cups and balls" But like stated, "the trophy is just a gimmick."

David Roth changed the face of coin magic by adding props to extend the magic, and make it a theatrical experience. You should look at his many wonderful routines on KZbin. My tribute was an original routine that emulated David's ideas of using props, and I even used some of his patter lines that are well known to magicians. Penn and Teller know David's style of magic, and it is no secret in the magic world that we performed and lectured together, including putting on the well-known New York Coin Magic Seminars. Penn was alluding to coins appearing under the hand as a cups and balls routine, but it is more like Al Goshman's Salt and Pepper shaker routine (you should watch that as well, it is a classic). I don't really know if the guys understood the entire routine, but really, they just need to know the basic idea. Thanks for your question.

I'm not even sure they weren't really fooled. Yes, it looks like a variation of cups and balls and sure, you must have used some basic techniques. But they didn't throw in enough clues to let us understand if they exactly did know how you did it. So, this may even be a secret fooler, like that guy with the casino chips had achieved once. They gave him the trophy later, acknowledging they had not really sorted it out as it wasn't done the way they thought.

Thanks for your comment. Personally, I think there were more than a few surprises that could not be anticipated, although maybe in trying to backtrack they were able to understand some of them. But if Penn and Teller understand the basic premise, that is usually enough for them. And that's O.K. The real point of the show is to showcase good magic. The award thing is just the gimmick that sells the show. Honored that I was asked to be on the show twice. Glad you enjoyed it!

The sleight coin techniques were very good but wouldn't work in close-up magic which is why penn and teller were kept 20 metres away. So unfortunately, despite some really nice moves, performing a close-up coin routine that can't be performed in the real world as a close-up coin routine was somewhat disappointing for me.

It certainly can be done close-up. There is no need for Penn and Teller to be at the table as there is no audience participation, and they sit in their normal seats. Their seats are fixed so they really can't move them up or back, and that is the best location for viewing. They also have monitors so they can watch the close-up camera view should they desire. The trick is big enough for parlour work, but for extreme close-up the routine is performed in similar fashion with the same but smaller props (there is a promo for it elsewhere on KZbin), although the larger props work just fine.

The reason Allison, Penn, and Teller wear the same outfits is for continuity. The people that perform on a given day are divided up to give a diverse show every week. For example, 4 card guys may perform one day, but will be divided up into 4 different shows so that each show will have variety. Also, this way, each show will usually have one winner on it. Since the performers are spliced up into different shows, Allison, Penn, and Teller wear the same outfit for each season.

Explain it. Explain the complete vanishes, the appearance (and vanish) of the copper coin, the surprise endings. And do it without trying to rewatch in slo mo, and reconstruct, like Penn and Teller. One time. Then I will delete you. let's see how 101 it is for you 😉

@@chrisklugh see here's the thing. I read all the time (here and on other's segments as well) how obvious or easy a trick is. But no one ever actually says how it's done. The truth is, Penn and Teller know the basic idea because it is a common theme in magic (object appearing under something), but do not know everything (which is why they didn't comment on the rest). I am not even sure they understood that it was an original plot, and not one of David Roth's tricks! However, it is their game and they only have to tell the judge the basic premise, and often that is enough to "win". The producers don't care much about the winning thing, as far as they are concerned everyone who gets on the show is a winner. And they are right. You are told this from the moment you are accepted. The idea is to play along, nod, and gracefully leave to applause. You have to remember that it is their show, and you are a guest. So when I read someone tell me it was a basic trick, anyone can do it, or it would never fool them, I just shake my head because there is a lot of secret stuff in this routine that goes by everyone. Even the magic judge told me at our first meeting which part fried him. I have deleted a few comments in the past because they were either rude, or actually figured out something that I don't want the rest of the people reading to know (why spoil it for them). So that is why I responded to you as I did. The trick is anything but textbook, but the moves are taught in MY textbook, Rubinstein Coin Magic. Best wishes for a happy and healthy New Year.

@@rubinsteincoinmagic Yes, agreed. And that is why I do not want to elaborate much on this. Sorry if my original comment maybe poked you a bit. My intent was more so from a perspective of 'Would this Fool Them', as per the theme of the show. Its not taking away from your abilities, as you are good at what you do. But the premise is still as old as magic itself and was not going to get by Penn and Teller. So when I watch the show, I give/get more 'bang for my viewing dollar' more to those the credit when someone does something that does challenge or Fool these guys. I try to see it from their point of view, not from someone that is in awe and wonder of it all as per your most usual audience. I know you would entertained me had I been there to watch it with my own eyes. ;)

Beautiful magician's magic! But... Far too long for a lay-person to pay attention-to for that long! Remember, nobody cares as much about the moves as you!!! Magicians will love it, and some will buy it ;-)

This is literally the closer for my normal show for laymen. Laymen don't know what moves are, they focus on the magic of the coin appearing in impossible locations, changing, vanishing, and transforming. Far from being too long (and not as long as others done on Penn and Teller), but made for a formal show ( not for table hopping or to show casually to friends). And thank you, the routine with props has almost sold out. But thanks for your input.

Though a huge fan of Roth's work and coin magic in general, this routine kind of seemed boring inspite of me being a fan of Rubinstein's since 2006.. This routine really needs to be worked on and fine-tuned further more.. 🙄

Thanks for your input. This routine was developed and choreographed over many months, uses sophisticated techniques, and is exactly the way I wanted it. The structure is loosely based on Roth's The Sleeve. But hey, can't please everyone.
