Dr. Myles Allen on GeologicalNetZero

Described by the BBC as "the physicist behind Net Zero," Dr. Myles Allen is a Professor of Geosystem Science at the University of Oxford and Director of the Oxford Net Zero initiative.
In this informative lecture and Q&A, Allen argues the only way human civilization can stop fossil fuels from causing further climate change is by achieving Geological Net Zero - where for every tonne of carbon dioxide generated from fossil fuels, one tonne is permanently restored to the solid earth.

After another of Dr Allen's talks, I thought that I might have misunderstood his position on carbon capture. But no, it appears that I had it right all along. In his view, we need to start seriously pumping large amounts of CO2 back into geological formations now, in advance of stopping fossil fuels, because that won't happen in time. I absolutely do NOT believe this. Fossil fuel collapse is going to happen much sooner than most expect. I could try to argue that shifting to renewable energy needs to be promoted aggressively, in advance of major amounts of direct air capture, so as to avoid the moral hazard of using CCS to enable continued use of fossil fuels. But I don't even feel like pushing that. It's going to happen, and soon, indeed is happening NOW, even in the absence of major, global, mainly political efforts to accelerate it.
