Podgorica, Montenegro, February 27th, 2017 - Nadine Burke Harris, PhD, paediatrician globally known for her innovative approach to addressing Adverse Childhood Experiences, gave her speech during the "End Violence" conference that was held in Podgorica, Montenegro.
Through this conference, the campaign „End Violence“, initiated by the Government of Montenegro and UNICEF, and with the support from EU and Telenor Foundation, sparked a public debate on violence against children in Montenegro. The aim of the campaign is to promote and support parents to implement the best parenting practices in order to raise children without violence and to ensure that they grow up into healthy adults.

I know this is an older post but when I was in college (in my 30's) when we studied the personality disorders, I didn't recognize my own mother, a severe borderline personality disorder. Because what they stated about borderlines didn't begin to describe my mother. Years later, a therapist told me my mother was borderline and that my childhood was un-survivable. This good speaker is the first I have viewed that gets it.

I have a ACE score of 9. I’m a 56 year old woman. Raised in foster care. I really thought for most of my life I was doing pretty well. In the past few years I have suffered debilitating depression. I do smoke cigarettes. Don’t really drink. I don’t use any drugs other then Tobacco. No heart disease, not a diabetic. I don’t live in poverty ect.... But, I’m not ok, anymore. It’s like I have nothing left to handle stress, emotional pain, or much of anything.

I found Louise Hays " You can heal your life " very helpful in understanding the emotional reasons behind each illness, there are also excises in the book to help you switch your perception to past or current trauma, it's a little rudimentary and new age ish .... But it was published in the 70s. I found it somewhat of a relief..

So profound! She articulates with such way to explain and breakdown every aspect of what she is speaking about. This should be a mandatory video, course, teaching for every medical student/therapist/teachers/parents. This will effect how I go forward with teaching and loving my children. I realize now that one of my children is possibly exhibiting some of the effects due to stress in our home. This video has been a blessing and I will not let her be a statistic. Thank you doctor. It hurts to not see a single black professional in the audience. Our ancestors have been fighting that bear and running from that bear for years. It’s sad when as adults battling chronic diseases the doctors tell us that our race have more aggressive forms of these cancers, diseases etc. Of course our stress responses are perpetually over active. I wake up every day to news of police violence against my people . It’s no wander I struggle with depression and high blood pressure. I don’t smoke i don’t drink , I’me not overweight. I’me lucky to be aware and able to keep informed so at 69years I can support my son who clearly is still as an adult exposed to high doses of adversity.

Thank u so much dr. I am a 72 yr old woman with two sons. At age 68 I started getting depressive episodes. I am an RNBS myself & here I was facing a mental illness. ( once I was a cardiac care nurse & when I was 49 found out I needed open heart surgery) now after putting myself in 9 times I know I have Bipolar 2 ( which even with all my psych training ) was something I had never heard of. Now I have 2 sons ages 52 & 45. Both having serious problems. If I wasn’t on u tube researching for me I never would have found your so very informative videos. I know a lot better now what’s wrong with my 2 sons. Both suffered severe childhood trauma. The older one is struggling with addictions. He is totally messing up his life. When he was 5 I was told he had poor impulse control, then a yr later that he had ADD. The 45 yr old has less problems but has suffered even more childhood trauma than the older one. Thank u so very much for your brilliant work. Diane

Interesting information. This is why I've always been intrigued with child psychology. It taught me a lot about why I am the way I am. Considering I have an ACE score of 7 which doesn't even factor in my experiences when I left home at 16, I see where I am at today physically and mentally and I see it as an absolute blessing. I now know why I have BED, IBS, inability to deal with stress, and a life of being prone to addictions.

Something I told my own subscribers this week. Overcoming adversity and continuing forward. This is also how you respond to it. As I see this daily as a healthcare provider. People who are destroyed adults because they couldn't outrun a terrible childhood. Too many times this becomes the excuse to give up. The reason someone won't try. "Because this (fill in the blank) happened to me." Now understand I am not discounting terrible childhoods. I had one as well. What I am saying is that the world doesn't care. It is totally indifferent. It may owe you but good luck trying to collect. The only way to collect your due is to go out and seek it, pursue it and take it back from the universe. The stories of great triumph are rarely without great adversity--ever notice that? Most will lie down to bad circumstances. But those who get up and fight back will insure that their story is a great one. Hope this helps someone out there---keep being great---Charles.

Ashley Luguardo ~ Try starting here: *National Association of Adult Survivors of Child Abuse* naasca.com *Break the Silence* (helpline page) www.breakthesilencedv.org/break-silence-offers-helpline-thats-unique/ A word search for depression forums: www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=depression+forums+2018&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8 I would also suggest you see an MD, get a physical, run some blood tests and have your thyroid checked. One third of the population has a low thyroid, doesn't know it, and the symptoms are depression, chronic fatigue and cold hands and feet. Also, going on an anti-anxiety/anti-depressant like Zoloft will help you quit smoking if you use it in conjunction with the nicotine patch. I've smoked since in utero and I quit this way with no withdrawals. I am 65. The depressed tend to isolate, but joining an online forum will show you that you're not alone, and give you the validation and support you need. Every victim needs to tell their story. It's cathartic.

Dear Dr. Harris: Thank you for your heart! I graduated from nursing school in 1977 and we needed your information then as well as now, and into the future. The approach to caring for children with childhood adversity is fantastic to prevent it before it ruins a child's life (like them being sent to prison or something because of wrong reason being given for their behavior in school or as adolescents perhaps). I wish the pediatrician's were using your treatment tools for early identification and parental support when I was raising my children because of unplanned adversity in our household. God Bless You!

It would be nice if our world wanted people to be happy, healthy, & free people, because the damages don't just start in homes, it would be nice if our health system actually wanted to heal instead of push medicine that causes more symptoms that crates more sickness most damage is done for the sake of paper, the old mighty dollar, I don't know anyone that has gotten fiscal or mental health issues, get better after seeing a doctor, psychologist, therapist or gone to counseling get better, but instead they stay the same or get worse & I know first hand as well... But the world is changing and more people are realizing everything in this world right now is opposite, perception is reality and people are starting to see through the bull crap... There's enough homes, car's, food & whatever else for everyone to live comfortably but instead food is thrown away while people are starving to death, car's sit in lots everywhere while people are stuck, homes are taken just to sit empty or abandoned to fall apart then torn down while people are homeless, all so some people can feel above others it's crazy...

My mom's answer too, was that's the way I was taught and she would NEVER ADMIT SOMETHING WAS WRONG WITH HER. I digress though. It's Ironic Right? Give the person listening a moment to pause and it also gives the speaker a moment to conclude. You should be more focused on the importance of what she's speaking to rather than criticizing such insignificant things because overall she did a great job. I wonder how well you'd do?
